Victim tells sobering story
• By Julia Evans
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
School students are about to get
a sobering lesson.
George Cairney’s life was
completely changed in 2008
when he sat in the passenger’s
seat of a car beside a driver who
had been drinking.
The car crashed
into a brick wall at
135km/h.
He will talk

Nic Hill
to students at the
CBHS hall on
October 18 from
7pm.
At the time Mr
Cairney, 24, was
17 and attended
King’s College in
Auckland.
Taking most
of the impact
of the crash, he
has since been
legally blind and
has lost his sense
of taste, hearing
and smell, as well
as developing
diabetes, epilepsy
and premature
ageing.
After spending a month in a
coma, Mr Cairney also lost his
memory from a year before and
after the crash.
His talk will discuss the road
to recovery from his injuries, as
well as the decisions which led
to him to get into the car on that
tragic day.
Mr Cairney, who lives in
HIGH RISK: Crash victim George Cairney will talk about drink
driving to students at CBHS on October 18.
Wanaka, will be supported
during the talk by his mentor
and friend Graham Clarke who
has his own story to tell.
His son was killed after
getting behind the wheel after
he’d been drinking.
Headmaster Nic Hill has
invited students from all schools
around the city and the wider
community to hear the story
of “sadness, recovery, love and
strength”.
Mr Hill said the school is
encouraging students to have
emotional conversations about
alcohol and driving.
“These are conversations that
we as adults have to be starting
. . . there is a parental role
in making sure our boys are
equipped to be safe,” he said.
Playcentre
destroyed

rushes to
find new
home
• By Julia Evans
BELFAST Playcentre is racing
against the clock to find a new
home after its building was gutted
by fire.
The playcentre, next to
Sheldon Park on Main North
Rd, caught fire just after 1pm on
Sunday.
With the school term starting
next week, the playcentre is
determined to find a new home
so parents and children aren’t
affected.
A pot had been left on the stove,
which caught fire during a fifth
birthday party.
“Two men put a fire blanket
on the stove but it got out of
control. Then they tried to use a
fire extinguisher, which ran out
of foam,” playcentre co-ordinator
Julie O’Rourke said.
“They did everything correctly
. . . it’s just one of those things that
happens.”
The centre was evacuated and
the two men were treated at the
scene for smoke inhalation but
were not taken to hospital.

YOUNG MEN, cars, speed
and alcohol are unfortunately a
perfect mix for tragedy.
It was like that decades ago,
and it still remains today and
will no doubt into the future.
Next week, two people
affected by drink driving and
crashes will talk to students
at Christchurch Boys’ High
School.
One is a young guy who was
the passenger in a car driven by
a drink driver that crashed –
and one a dad who lost his son
to drink driving (see page 1).
How students digest the talk
will inevitably be up to them.
Hopefully, when they are
out at the weekend, they’ll
remember the talk and not
get into a car driven by a mate
who has been drinking, or get
behind the wheel themselves
after having a few.

Fendalton roads worry
• By Julia Evans
THERE ARE serious concerns
for pedestrian and cyclist safety
on Fendalton roads.
And the creation of a working
party to address the issues affecting
Idris, Straven and Glandovey
Rds has been a long time in the
making, residents say.
Traffic volume through the
area is out of hand, the road
layout is poor and the parts of the
cycleway are too narrow, resident
James Wilding said.
The working party was established
after Mr Wilding and
other Fendalton residents Ross
Seal and Barbara Hann made a
deputation to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community
Board regarding these issues.
The group also sent photos to
city council staff in February and
a letter signed by 200 residents to
city councillors and the mayor.
Working party members have
not yet been confirmed but it
will be made up of residents,
including Mr Wilding, as well as
community board members and
city council staff.
The residents want to create
a “living street” atmosphere,
which promotes pedestrians and
discourages cars.
“The board is keen to work

and cyclist safety.

productively with affected parties
on the issues that have been
raised about traffic volumes,” city
council manager planning and
delivery transport Lynette Ellis
said.
A date for its first meeting has
not yet been set but residents are
keen to address the mounting
problems.
Mr Wilding said there are a
large number of trucks using
the roads, which are classified as
minor arterial or collector.
“We have freight routes, for
example Blenheim Rd. Those four
and six-lane roads are the ones
freight should us,” he said.
Part of the cycle lane is 60cm
wide. Under the city council’s
guidelines cycle lanes should be
at least 1.5m wide, not including
the gutter, Mr Wilding said.
And he said it’s not uncommon
for vehicles to cross into the
cycleways, which he has photographed.
“Children must be, and feel
safe, on our roads, especially
in residential areas and near
schools. The city council ought
to help ensure a safe and healthy

regulation, it should be 1.5m.

city for residents,” Mr Wilding
said.
The area has the highest density
of residential heritage buildings
in the city – which have been also
been affected by the number of
heavy vehicles, the residents said.
“We seem to be creating a quiet
largely traffic free CBD and busy
suburbs. It is important the safety
and character of suburbs right
across the city is not lost as a result
of post-earthquake changes,”
Mr Wilding said.

Build roads and the traffic will come
Papanui city
councillor
and avid
cyclist Mike
Davidson
writes
about the
major issue
afflicting
his ward and what
he thinks would be a
good alternative during
Biketober
One key issue facing the Papanui
Ward, and the city, at the
moment is traffic congestion.
By 2041 it is predicted that
there will be an additional
70,000 vehicle movements within
the four avenues every day.
Work is also currently underway
on the Northern Corridor,
which is due to be completed
within the next three years.
But I struggle to see what
benefit the city will see from this
$240 million roading project,
which channels non-ratepaying
residents into the heart of St
Albans as they head into the
central city.
The built environment influences
behaviour and it will not
take long before this new fourlane
highway will be at capacity.
So what is the answer?
Modal shift – encouraging
those who can, to use a different
form of transport instead of a
single occupancy vehicle – walking,
cycling, catching a bus or
car pooling.
Perhaps if the money for this
project had been invested into
a decent passenger rail service
from the north we could have
had a true opportunity to influence
behaviour for the better
and created a truly sustainable
public transport option.
However, it would appear that
numerous authorities and agencies
have never taken seriously
the possibility of passenger rail.
The focus seems to be on the
bus network as our public transport
option even though the
bus routes are not continuously
separated from vehicles and
are still forced to deal with the
congestion street fight.
Plus changes to the bus network
now make it more difficult
for a lot of people who have
multiple changeovers and longer
waiting times.
With 50 per cent of car trips in
the city under 5km we need to
encourage the uptake of cycling
and walking as an alternative
mode of transport.
Survey after survey show
that there are a large number
of people wanting to cycle, but
choose not to because they feel
it is unsafe. The major cycleway
programme is designed to remove
this safety concern barrier
and encourage more people to
take up cycling.
CONGESTION:
Work turning
Cranford St
into a fourlane

arterial is
about to
begin, but
city councillor
Mike Davidson
isn’t sure the
money is
being well
spent. PHOTO:
GEOFF SLOAN
There was never an expectation
that the day these were
completed there would be hundreds
of new cyclists as it takes
time to change culture.
However, from cycleways
completed so far, the numbers
using these cycleways are
already exceeding the predicted
volumes.
It is important that the cycleway
programme is completed,
public transport becomes more
user-friendly and our transport
culture is changed. If we don’t the
congestion we are seeing today
will pale in comparison to what
will happen in the near future.
We need our streets and transport
network to work for everyone
no matter what age, ability
or form of transport used.
Readers respond to a
Nor’West News article
regarding businesses
on Cranford St worried
Northern Arterial upgrades
will force them to close
Conrad Fitz-Gerald – A bit
naive to expect the city council to
do something that actually helps
local businesses and residents.
Maree Clayton – Less cars!
More trains. No-brainier. Should
have been a priority, immediately
post-quake. South and north out
of the city. Quicker, easy. Less cars
on road, saving all round and less
stress. Sadly, too many missed
opportunities from a bunch of
bumbling bureaucrats. Need
an airport rail but alas we got a
bloody archway.
Jan Driscoll – Heavens,
there is a bike in the picture . . . a
rare sight indeed. Cranford St is
already a nightmare, especially
around 3 to 6pm. And with heavy
parking on both sides around
the garage and shopping centre
that will evidently be going and
then a massive expensive housing
development along there, you
have got a disaster in the making.
Feel really sorry for the businesses
around the Innes Rd and Cranford
St corner. Another example
of top quality planning. Adding
another lane to the Northern
Arterial won’t fix it either. Get rail
up and running.

Rob White – Well people
have had at least 30 years to get
used to this since it was first
planned, and put off, and then
off, and then back on again. The
bigger problem is the city council
actually agreeing to housing in
the swamp on the other side of
Cranford St.
Sylvia Oliver – It is so hard
on businesses after seven years
you would think things would
improve but, no, they get worse
all the time. One wonders why
our city council and so-called
Government cannot intervene
to protect the small businesses.
Makes me so angry.
Beverly Jackson – I live on
Cranford St. They’ve given no
consideration to the residents
trying to get out of their driveways.
It’s hard enough now.
Michelle Green – Traffic
today was horrendous, I queued
for ages on Cranford St bumperto-bumper
all way from Placemakers
to Main North Rd.
Readers also respond
to the article regarding
Bishopdale New World
winning its battle to display
alcohol on the ends of
aisles
Glenis Shaw – I don’t think
it makes any difference. I like
it being sold in supermarkets,
easier and cheaper. Wine consumption
is not a problem to the
majority of people.
Geoff Oscar O’Connell – I
just wish Bishopdale New
World stocked more Monteith’s
Pilsner.
Lynda Byrnes – The majority
of people who shop in
supermarkets are sensible, don’t
let the few idiots ruin for the rest
of us. We buy our alcohol and
consume it sensibly with friends
over meals. They don’t ban the
caffeine drinks and other things
that effect our teenagers, why
make it hard to buy alcohol for
consenting adults?
Sharren Wilson – If they
have a licence to sell alcohol, it
makes absolutely no difference
whatsoever where it is placed in
the aisle.
Marilyn Tippet – Come on
people it comes down to personal

responsibility. Are you going
to take away all my freedom of
choice because some people can’t
handle their drink or they are
addicted to cigarettes, chocolate,
Coca Cola, sugar, McDonald’s?
Like I said personal responsibility
Audrey Leslie – Alcoholic
products should not be sold in
supermarkets. It’s always the
ones who can least afford it that
are tempted to purchase alcohol
when they go into the supermarket
for food. I once watched
two young men looking in the
meat section, actually picked up
a meat package, then returned
it to the freezer and purchased
a carton of beers instead. Now
that’s sad.
Ann Vernon – Alcohol is a
dangerous drug. I personally
think a separate discrete area is
appropriate. In some supermarkets
you have to walk through
the alcohol section to access the
shop. We normalise binge drinking
in New Zealand and minimise
the serious harm it causes.
I try to limit this normalising
alcohol use with my children.
Having a different area does
not penalise adults in any way.
We no longer have cigarettes on
display. Why not the same for
alcohol?

Fire rages, homes at risk
Playcentre’s
bid to find
new home
after fire
•From page 1
Ms O’Rourke said the playcentre,
which has a roll of 25 children, is
currently working towards finding
a new place to hold its sessions.
“We won’t really know what the
next steps are until we meet with
the insurance company . . . but the
hope is to run it out of somewhere
nearby,” she said.
Ms O’Rourke said the playcentre
will continue to support the families
“devastated” by the fire.
“We don’t operate in the school
holidays, so that gives us a week to
sort somewhere out . . . we won’t let
it affect the families,” she said.
But Ms O’Rourke said there
would be a “shortfall” in terms of
the insurance payout due to high
demolition costs in the city.
“We’ve had huge support from
the community and playcentres
around the country,” she said.
Belfast Community Network
chief executive Lynda Goodrick
said the network of more than
15 groups will rally behind the
playcentre. “We’re gutted, it’s devastating
for the families. But we’re
doing everything we can to help
support them,” she said.

Breastfeeding programme recognised
ST GEORGE’S Hospital staff
have been honoured for their
commitment to breastfeeding.
“Breastfeeding is important
and helps to lay the foundation
for good health in infancy
for mothers and babies,”
New Zealand Breastfeeding
Alliance executive officer Jane
Cartwright said.
She said for nine years staff at
the hospital’s maternity centre
have “served as a beacon in the
region” for their standards of
breastfeeding support and care
for new parents.
“Since the beginning of
this year, about 800 women
have discharged from St
George’s facilities exclusively
breastfeeding their babies -
this is a great start towards
breastfeeding babies when they
return home,” Ms Cartwright
said.
St George’s charge midwife
Andrea Robinson emphasised
the importance breastfeeding
plays in the reduction in rates
of childhood infections and
protection against later health
risks.
Ms Robinson said that
breastfeeding is one of the
smallest investments a country
can make to build its future
prosperity.
“We should all be proud
of being an integral part of
providing such a precious
investment to our women and
to the wider health of
our community,” Ms Robinson
said.

Julia Daly, Andrea Robinson, and Maree Lewington have
been recognised for their commitment to breastfeeding.

Mike Davidson spoke to the
owners of the property, which
is at 130 Caledonian Rd to
see whether the sale could go
ahead.
However, he would not
release details of that conversation
as they were “commercially
sensitive.”
The property is next door to
the Caledonian Rd side of the
community centre site.
Cr Davidson said the current
community centre plans
took up most of the current
site, and once car parking was
included, there would be little
room for green space.
City council general
manager corporate services
Bruce Rendall said as the city
council is “still in negotiations
around acquiring an option
on the land” further comment
is not appropriate.
The matter has been referred
to the 2018-28 Long Term
Plan preparation process.
It has been delegated Mr
Rendall to negotiate the purchase.

‘Explosion of colour’ rewards gardeners
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Julia Evans
THE LOVELOCKS have done
it again.
Northwood residents Brian
and Janet Lovelock came away
with the premier gold at this
season’s spring gardening awards
from the Canterbury Horticultural
Society.
The couple also added two
gold awards from the Christchurch
Beautifying Association’s
spring garden awards to their
collection in the open and secret
garden categories.
“We’re pretty proud, we’ve
always been big gardeners,” Mrs
Lovelock said, they spend almost
every day outdoors.
She said the trophies will be
put in a display case at their
house until they have to be
returned for the next round of
summer judging.
Which she said the pair are
already working towards.
“Some of my seedlings are already
coming up. It never stops,”
Mrs Lovelock said.
Although the Lovelocks spend
every day in the garden together,
they wouldn’t often be caught
sitting out there having a cup of
tea.
“If we sit out there, we always
spot something that could be
better or needs to be fixed and
keep working,” she said.
But Mrs Lovelock said there
is nothing more rewarding than
their garden.
“You get the tiniest handful of
seed and watch it turn into an
explosion of colour in the garden
displays,” she said.
The Lovelock’s spring award
winning garden included tulips,
polyanthas and shrubs like rhododendrons
and azaleas.
But come November they’ll
be pulling out the annuals and
planting their summer garden.

Dean of international

One of the sisters from St

last year and the Rangi students
were all struck by the struggle
the school still faced following
Cyclone Winston early last year.
Amy said being able to give
back is a very important part of
being a global citizen.
“St Andrew’s in Tonga
struggles to find enough money
to do what it needs to do. Many
of the families are unemployed
and because the school is funded
from fees, this means there isn’t
enough money for even the
basics like books and other dayto-day
needs,” she said.
Popular food at the lunch
included chocolate and fruit
waffles, Japanese rice balls and
the Thai jelly.

classmate Ploy Laolerchai were

Expertise Built On Family Heritage
For Christchurch real estate agent
Pip Sutton, real estate is a family
heritage spanning four generations
over approximately 93 years.
It all started with her great-grandfather
Frederick in 1924, out of Lyttelton. Her
grandfather, Fred, continued working in
Lyttelton, setting up an office in London
Street, which still stands today.
Pip’s father Dave became a partner in Simes
real estate in Christchurch in the early 1970s
until 2005 when it was sold for retirement
purposes. From the age of just 18 months Pip
became part of it, with many early memories
of attending property auctions, visiting
building sites and regular office visits where
the auction gavel and lectern were often
used as play toys.
“I grew up in the business,” she says. “During
school holidays I worked in Dad’s office. I
spent a lot of time relieving as receptionist,
in accounts and assisting putting marketing
packages and the likes together, oh and lots
of Sunday drives around new developments
within the city and Lyttelton Harbour with
the family.”
On leaving school Pip gained a Bachelor
of Commerce & Management degree with
a marketing major. She gained valuable
experience and skills working as a top sales
and marketer for multi-national market
leaders within New Zealand and the UK.
In 2005, Pip returned to Christchurch to
commence her real estate career under the
guidance and wisdom of her father.
“This involved long hours of intensive
learning. He passed on an in-depth
understanding of Christchurch’s land and
development right through from the early
Lyttelton days. This included understanding
district plans, zoning, the development
process. How to research properties deeply
to uncover potentials for new owners. How
to listen to people and respond to their needs.
“He passed on that little bit of magic,
which had been handed down from three
previous generations of learnings from great
depressions, World Wars and within my
career, the Global Financial Crisis and pre
and post earthquake environments.”
In 2014, Pip joined Ray White Real Estate,
because she liked their in-depth attention to
real estate law and management style at the
Cashmere office, plus being a family brand
itself spanning back to the early 1900s, she
recognised the more caring nature of the
brand, perhaps due to over 100 years of
learnings being passed down too.
“You are working with people during a
milestone time in their life, they are often
already under stress. A real estate agent’s job
is to assist in relieving the stress, not adding
to it.”
Pip has become a successful and highly
regarded real estate salesperson across
the city. For her, the most enjoyable and
important part of the process is to spend
time with both buyers and sellers, using
her in-depth knowledge of the Canterbury
property environment to assist in achieving
the best possible outcome for her clients.
As she puts it: “My measure of success is the
quality of the results I achieve for my clients,
not the number of houses I sell. I would
rather take more time getting my client into
a better position than collecting listings and
making quick sales.”

NOR’WEST NEWS
Love your dentures
Is it time to swap your generic denture appearance
for a beautiful, natural looking smile?
Internationally renowned dental
technician Richard Greenlees,
PGDipCDTech (University of Otago) of
Lovebite is the person to call.
His special point of difference is
rebuilding what he calls the Oral
Architecture, the structure and shape of
a patient’s face that is often lost following
years of wearing dentures.
Lovebite dentures address problems
that can arise due to years of the patient
wearing incorrectly fitting or poorly
functioning dentures, such as poor
occlusion (the way the teeth come
together), aesthetics, function and
hygiene.
An intricate knowledge and
understanding of facial features allows
Richard to return facial tissues back to the
correct position, reform lips, and restore
beauty and confidence.
Richard provides a friendly, discreet
service and personally guides his patients
through the transformation process to
create teeth with small nuances in the
fabrication, colour and shape.
Carmen, a recent patient said in a
thank you letter to Richard, “I highly
recommend your craftsmanship to anyone
wanting a natural looking smile. Because
you do your work in front of your client,
one is able to see how meticulous and
dedicated you are to ending up with a top
class result. My dentures are amazing.
They look like one’s own natural teeth. So
much time, effort and energy went into
the end result. Simply the best.”
Richard’s patients have varying needs,
from full denture replacement, to first
time immediate dentures, implant
supported dentures and metal partial
dentures.
Since he started making teeth in
1980 Richard has travelled extensively,
accumulating vast knowledge through
training and working in Japan, and
running his own practice in the
prestigious Harley Street, London for 15
years. He continues to teach his world
leading techniques globally.
Richard also creates porcelain crowns
and veneers, working with like-minded
dental professionals.
A beautiful new Lovebite smile
resembles nature and reflects the patient’s
character. It boosts confidence and helps
patients to look and feel years younger.

200g Blanched almonds, ground
1 cup White sugar
5 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla
1¼ tsp Gluten-free baking
powder
MARINATED RUMP STEAK
AND MUSHROOM KEBABS
Ingredients
Kebabs
600g Beef rump steak
12 small mushrooms
1 Large onion, cut into 3cm
squares
6 Vine-sweet mini peppers,
halved diagonally
Syrup
1 Tangelo, juiced
¼ cup Sugar
1 bowl Greek yoghurt, creme
fraiche, vanilla ice cream or
coconut yoghurt for a dairy-free
alternative
Directions
Place whole tangelos in a large
pot and cover with plenty of cold
water. Boil for two hours, drain
and allow to cool.
Heat the oven to 180 deg C.
Grease and line a 21cm round
spring form cake tin.
Cut tangelos in half and
remove any pips. Place fruit
(skin, pith, flesh and all) in a
food processor and blitz until
smooth.
Add all other ingredients
and blitz until smooth and well
combined.
Pour into prepared cake tin
and bake for one hour or until a
skewer inserted into the middle
of the cake comes out clean.
Cover cake with tin foil half way
through cooking time to avoid
the top burning.
Remove cake from the oven,
mix tangelo juice and sugar
together and pour over cake
while warm.
Allow cake to cool before
removing from tin.
Marinade
2 Tbsp Lemon juice
¼ cup Canola oil
¼ cup Soy sauce
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp Curry powder
2 cloves Garlic, crushed
1 pinch Freshly ground black
pepper, to taste
Directions
Combine all the ingredients
for the marinade and place in a
resealable plastic bag.
Cut the steak into 3cm cubes,
add to the marinade and move
it around so it is evenly
covered.
Discard any long stems
from the mushrooms. Add to
the marinade and move them
around.
Seal the bag. Refrigerate for
at least eight hours. This is the
secret of the well-flavoured
kebabs.
Thread the steak, onion,
mini peppers and mushrooms
alternately onto four long metal
skewers.
Tip the marinade into a small
saucepan and bring to the boil.
Grill for about 2min each side

Ensuring a safe
work place
Learning first aid is not only a part of
ensuring a safe work place, but also an
integral part of our engagement with
the wider community. We all learn the
necessary skills to ensure that in times of
emergency we are able to assist our work
colleagues, but are we able to take these
skills home, into the community or on to
the sports field?
Not all work places are the same and
the injury risk for each place can be
wide and variable. The office attended by
administrators does not carry the same
risk as those people working with heavy
machinery, or perhaps at some distance
from a regular ambulance service. It is
therefore essential that you pick the right
first aid course to suit all of your activities
– both professional and social.
Take, for example, an office worker who
does not have a high risk work environment
and whose concern might be to ensure
that they can deal with minor cuts and
superficial injuries, or the ability to perform
effective CPR. These skills can be achieved
on a course of eight hours duration and
would generally fit into low to medium
risk area. But take this same person on to
a sports field either as a spectator or player
when a higher level injury occurs. The
eight hour course covering unit standards
6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does
not cover head neck and spinal injuries,
eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings.
The majority of injuries occur outside of
the work place, in fact one in three injuries
occurs in the home, making it the most
common place for injuries to happen.
New Zealand children are twice as likely
to die through injury as children who live
in Australia. They mostly die as a result
of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the
home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are
not far behind those in the workplace.
The wider 12 hour course teaches the
additional unit standard 6400 and provides
a wide knowledge base for medium to high
risk environments. This course covers
many of the skills required to deal with
the most common injuries, such as falls
(which can result in head, neck and spinal
injuries) and dealing with complex scenes
such as motor vehicle accidents.
If you are not sure on the course best
suited to your needs, ask your accredited
first aid training provider. They can explain
the course content and give you options
that will best suit your needs. Look beyond
the workplace and consider your family
and your location. Check that you have a
good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date
with replenished items, and that everyone
knows where it is located.

AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
NOR’WEST NEWS
Fast turnaround for
minor panel repairs
As we all know, having our car off the road for minor
panel repairs can be frustrating, but for customers of
SMART Repairs in Lichfield Street, it isn’t a problem.
“With our focus on fast turnaround,
getting customers back on the road
as quickly as possible is the way we do
business,” says owner Brian Caffell, who
runs the long-established panel shop
with his wife Maxine.
In addition, customers have the
benefit of a courtesy car, so they can stay
on the road while their vehicle is in the
workshop. There is also a free pick-up
and delivery service available if required.
Customers can be assured of topquality
workmanship at SMART
Repairs, with the workshop team having
over 40 years’ industry experience
between them, with services including
panelbeating, spraypainting, paintless
dent removal, (PDR) and mag wheel
repairs and painting.
As specialists in small to medium
panel repair work, no job is too small for
SMART Repairs, and with their friendly,
personal approach they make it easy for
customers who may be unsure what to
do if their vehicle has been scratched or
dented.
The team also provides quotes for all
insurance companies, and carry out
those repairs quickly and efficiently.
“We take pride in our work and ensure
that our customers are happy with the
results,” says Maxine.
SMART Repairs are currently looking
at expanding and incorporating a mobile
division, so they can come to you for
minor paint and interior trim repairs,
PDR and mag wheel repairs.
SMART Repairs is located at 272
Lichfield Street, at the Fitzgerald
Avenue end. Opening hours are
Monday to Friday, 8am-4.30pm.
To enquire about repairs to your
vehicle, please call in, or phone
377-0409.

LUTHER AND LLOYD:
TWO OUTRAGEOUS HERETICS?
SIX-WEEK COURSE
This year marks the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther
nailing his thesis to the church in his German town of
Wittenberg (October 31). An action that unexpectedly
sparked the Reformation. This year also celebrates the
50th Anniversary of the heresy trial of Lloyd Geering
here in Aotearoa New Zealand. An event that was most
divisive for many of our churches.
This course will examine the huge impact of the two
men in their time, noting their significance for today.
Attention will be drawn to the different theological
perspectives involved.
Six-week course of 2 hour sessions
held on Thursday afternoons 2pm - 4pm
commencing on 19 October 2017
The course will be co-facilitated by Charles Manning and
Reverend Rodney Routledge. The course will draw on the
latest scholarship and will be interactive in format.
