This type of bacteria is good and it
can live in your intestinal tract and is
something that’s necessary in order for
your gastrointestinal system to function
normally. This type of bacteria protects
your intestines from getting infections.
If your system is overwhelmed with
unhealthy bacteria or by viruses, or
if the good bacteria has been killed
because you had to take antibiotics, then
you can get diarrhea. When you take
probiotics, you help restore the balance
and that leads to your system naturally
healing. Anytime you have acute diarrhea
make sure to get professional medical
advice. You should always talk to a
healthcare professional before choosing
to take probiotics to treat diarrhea.
S. boulardii is not a bacteria but it is a
yeast probiotic and it works very similar
to the other good bacteria. This particular
probiotic is particularly useful when
diarrhea stems from a person having
taken antibiotics. Many also say that it is
very useful for travelers diarrhea. Some
studies have concluded that it helps fight
against certain pathogens and helps your
body properly absorb nutrients. Anyone
who has an autoimmune deficiency
should not use this without medical
advice because it is yeast.
OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUGS
When you have acute diarrhea but your symptoms are not excessively severe, then
you’ll be able to take over-the-counter medications but you still will need your doctor’s
supervision. Some of the types of medication you can take include loperamide and
Pepto Bismol. These meds only serve to treat the symptoms to give you temporary relief
but they don’t do anything to attack the cause of the diarrhea. Anyone who has chronic
diarrhea, meaning that it lasts for over 2 weeks should consult their doctor because
that is caused by different issues and shouldn’t be treated with the same methods.
