T
he Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel
by Jack London published in 1903 and set in
Yukon, Canada during the 1890s Klondike Gold
Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand.
The central character of the novel is a dog named
Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara
Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his
home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska.
He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment,
where he is forced to fi ght to survive and
dominate other dogs. By the end, he sheds the veneer
of civilization, and relies on primordial instinct
and learned experience to emerge as a leader in
the wild.
London spent almost a year in the Yukon collecting
material for the book. The story was serialized in
the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903
and was published a month later in book form. The
book’s great popularity and success made a reputation
for London. As early as 1923, the story was
adapted to fi lm, and it has since seen several more
cinematic adaptations. John Griffi th “Jack” London
January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an
American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A
pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fi ction,
he was one of the fi rst writers to become a worldwide
celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing.
He was also an innovator in the genre that would
later become known as science fi ction.

4 JOB HUNTING
How to find
a job where
they aren’t
How to fi nd a job that doesn’t exist…
(at least, it isn’t visible yet!) by Terry Leigh Britton
B
efore we get started, I’d like to ask you a few
questions, the fi rst of which being: if you apply
for a job being advertised in a newspaper or job
service or agency, will you be the only person being
interviewed at that time?
“Well, DUH, Mr. B. ,” I hear you saying.
OK, here’s another one. If you call a company when
they are not advertising for anyone, what is the
most likely answer you will receive if you ask them
if they are hiring? Like, “Hi, I’m looking for a job. Are
you hiring?”
I am still receiving those looks, you know…
Question three: How will a company respond to this
question? “I’m interested in working for your company.
What kinds of jobs are open right now? I’ll do
anything!”
I certainly hope you are very good at doing everything,
in that case. Including cleaning bathrooms.
Four: “Hello, I’ve heard you are in the [fi ll in the
blank] business. Is that true? If so, I’d like to work
for your company!” Will this go over very large?
Five: Do employers only hire people who are qualifi
ed for a certain position? Or, do they hire people
whom they like? Or both?
I know, that was a bunch of questions thrown in
there.
Six: Will an employer create a job that formerly did
not exist – just for you – if they like you?
Lastly, Seven: Can you get hired because you have
fi gured out how you could be useful to the employer
in ways that they themselves hadn’t thought of yet?
Now I’ve got your brain a’bubblin’!
Truth is, although everybody has ideas how to create
a resume, how to dress for an interview, how
to send a thank you note or write a cover letter, nobody
ever tells you that you do not have to do any
of that stuff, and you can still land a better job than
those who do all those right things.
This takes more work in some ways than just preparing
for a job interview for some advertised job,
but it can lead to good paying, soul-satisfying employment
much faster than any other method there
is. And here is the secret.
Preparation and Moxie
First, let me warn you, I will be telling you that you
will have to make so-called “cold calls” to companies
whom you wish to work for. That said, how do
you know what companies you would like to work
for?
Research!
I know that sounds a bit too much like homework,
but it is essential homework. It would be very wise
of you to know more about the company you are
considering working with than they even know about
themselves.
Before you allow them to consider you, you consider
them! Ask yourself: Would you consider hiring these
people to be your employer? Do you feel strongly
enough that they’d be a good fi t for you to spend
some of your valuable time to interview them?
Now, of course, companies do not mail out resumes
to prospective employees … exactly. But they do
provide information about themselves, and it is up to
you to unearth this information. It is up to you to fi nd
answers to the following questions before you pick
up the phone to call them.
1. Do their employees like working for them? Is
there a high turnover rate? If so, why? (Beware of
sour grapes as well as ‘company man’ answers.)
Ask the employees themselves. And the receptionists.
The receptionists are your best friend.
2. What does the company really do? It isn’t enough
to know so-and-so is a printing company, for instance.
Who are some of their major clients? What
are their specialties, if any? How many employees
work for them? Are they the only branch, or are
there other branches elsewhere? Might they be
looking at moving some operations overseas? Might
they be looking at moving you overseas? (… at
least, look into their policies and practices regarding
relocating employees.)
3. What successes have they had that they might be
proud of? Have they invested largely in new equipment
or facilities lately? Have they recently landed a
big contract?
4. Who would you actually be working under as your
supervisor? Who does that person report to? Who
makes the actual decisions for hiring people in the
particular department(s) you are interested in? You
want to talk to these people!
5. What kinds of plans do they have for the future?
Do your detective work to discover where this company
plans to go in its future endeavors.
6. This may seem silly, but not to them. When
was this company founded and by whom? Has it
changed hands through buyouts or mergers? Has it
gone public, and if so, when did it do so? What are
its stock prices currently? Would you consider them
a good investment? Would a broker?
7. Who has won awards within this company, and
for what? Be able to name names alongside their
accomplishments. Bring notes to the interview with
such information.
8. Do they have benefi ts? What are those benefi ts,
and how does one qualify? Are there company
‘perks’ that, although largely unoffi cial, are enjoyed
by many of the employees there? (like a golf club
membership, an annual trip to Disneyland for the
whole staff, reduced rates for flights or hotels,
generous vacation time, etc.) Are there probation
periods one has to pass before benefi ts kick in?
9. What hours of operation do they have, and how
do their shifts run? Two or three shifts? Can you
start off in a day shift, or do all new employees have
to take the 2nd and 3rd shifts? Do they have fourday
workweeks (usually four 10-hour days and three
days off) or three-day workweeks like they have in
Europe (usually three 12-hour days and four days
off)? Are people expected to work overtime – nearly
all the time??? (Overtime pay gets old after a whole
summer of lost weekends, believe me!)
You may be wondering by now, “Where the heck
am I supposed to fi nd all the answers to these
questions???” And although many of the questions
asked above seem understandable, some may
seem to have nothing to do with you anyway. Why
would you need to know about any of their recent
successes?
Potters Raid
Edward Potter born 1823 in New York City was popularly
known for his mission into North Carolina’s
interior in July 1863. This expedition became known as
the Potter’s Raid. This raid was conducted by a force of
800 Union soldiers comprising of both black and white
North Carolinians including — medics, guides, reporters,
cooks, and pack animals carrying ammunition and supplies.
Potter’s signifi cant engagements include Rocky
Mount, Greenville and Tarboro, as well as several other
clashes throughout the eastern part of the state. Potter’s
troops traveled an estimated 250 miles throughout
the region and left utter wreckage in their wake.
JULY 19 1863
In mid-July Potter’s troop left New Bern, and fi nally
arrived in Greenville on July 19. Potter’s men met no
resistance on arriving at Greenville, and they started
looting the houses and set fi re to the Tar River Bridge.
While he was in Greenville, Potter sent some of his
troops to Rocky Mount while he went with the rest of the
soldiers to Tarboro.
JULY 20 1863
Potter’s troop arrived Tarboro a small, prosperous
town surrounded by productive plantation on July 20,
and immediately started destroying military and civilian
properties and a Confederate ironclad under construction.
The soldiers raced in on West Wilson St. and
instantly started damaging properties especially around
the town’s elegant Town Common, including railroad
cars, cotton warehouses, and a partially-built ironclad
gunboat. They plundered the Masonic Hall, houses,
banks and several other properties. Later the same
day, Confederate forces from Fort Branch at Hamilton
stunned the Yankees right on the east of Tarboro, where
another heavy gunfi ght ensued for more than two hours.
Six Confederates lost their life, and a further 18 were
captured while the rest fl ed.
JULY 20 1863
Rocky Mount Mills is one of the biggest industrial
complexes in North Carolina, and it produces cloth
and yarn for the Confederate government. As such it
became the target of Brig. Gen. Edward E. Potter’s
forces. The objective was to destroy the Wilmington &
Weldon Railroad. The attack on the Railroad was a supply
line attack because the railroad bridge which spans
the nearby Tar River serves as a vital link between the
Confederate capital of Richmond, Wilmington, North
Carolina as well as other Confederate strongholds. During
the Civil unrest, military provisions and foodstuffs
were transported via the railroad to Richmond where it
could be transported to Confederate armies in the fi eld.
The Union commanders recognized that destroying that
supply link could likely make things much more diffi cult
for the Confederate armies. Potter’s men arrived at
Rocky Mount at about 8:30 am and for about two hours;
caused signifi cant damage to the Railroad. They burned
down the train depot and buildings nearby. Next, they
moved north and set fi re to the Tar River railroad bridge,
and then burned the huge Rocky Mount Mills warehouses,
railroad cars, stables, and 37 loaded army wagons.
Some of the soldiers also broke into homes and carted
away with valuables. They burned the cotton mills, gristmill,
along with copious amount of cotton, fl our, yarn,
and hardtack. Local folklore describes how the Mills was
completely burned down, but the mill’s owner house
William S. Battle was spared. Just as the Union troops
was about to burn the house, the mill’s superintendent
persuaded the commander Jacobs to spare it, explaining
that he, the superintendent, was a Northern man
himself and a Mason.
LOCAL HISTORY 5
Approximately more than 5,000 bales of cotton were
burned, and the amount of property destroyed by potter’s
expedition
into North Carolina
is estimated at
5,000,000 dollars.
The destruction
of the cotton mills
stalled operations
for several years
and changed
the course of the
mill’s history.
Despite the series
of attack on potter’s
forces during
their return to
New Bern, none
were successful.
Potter’s forces
eventually arrived
back at the Union
base on July 23 with sixty-four casualties from the sixday
raid.
No doubt Potter’s expedition was tremendously successful,
his forces destroyed a Confederate ironclad
under construction, the W & W Railroad Bridge over the
Tar River, at Tarboro, the Rocky Mount Mills, two other
Confederate steamships, and vast quantities of Confederate
military supplies and provisions. Furthermore,
Potter’s troop also captured 100 Confederate prisoners,
300 horses and brought back 300 contrabands (slaves
who fl ed from their former masters to seek the protection
of the Union) back to New Bern. These successes
were only temporary though, as Wilmington and Weldon
Railroad burned bridge was quickly replaced, and the
telegraph lines were soon repaired. However, Rocky
Mount Mills remained close for the next year.
DINING OUT
Dining with Kids:
How to Enjoy the Experience
We have all been in a restaurant and experienced
that family a couple tables over with the kids out
of control. Here are a few tips to keeping things
sane on the families night out.
M
ost people that currently have kids
will tell you that they used to go out
to eat often, once upon a time. That’s
because life is vastly different when you
don’t have to coordinate an excursion
with miniature versions of yourself that
just HAVE TO wear those purple socks
or they’ll go to pieces.
Appropriate apparel aside though, many
new parents dread going out to eat with
their kids because they’re afraid of being
embarrassed. If your kids haven’t yet
embarrassed you, they will. And they’ll
do it any place they can. So the best
course of action is to get them acquainted
with the real world in all situations
and that includes dining in restaurants.
Here are some ways you can actually
enjoy the dining experience with your
children tagging along.
Choose something kid-friendly
Now is NOT the time to choose that
fancy French place you’ve been dying
to try. You don’t need to go to some hohum
chain either. But plan ahead and
look for restaurants in your area that are
kid-friendly. They’ll have kids’ menus,
plus you won’t be the only people with
small, loud-talking children in there so
you’ll feel right at home.
Prepare them for the experience
Kids love imaginative role play so take
the opportunity to play “restaurant” and
act out what happens in a restaurant.
Be sure to show your child what a good
example of behavior is along with a bad
one. You should also talk about the restaurant
too. Tell them what the people
that work there do in an age-appropriate
way. In this way, the experience will be
more familiar even if it’s their first time.
Study the menu before you go
Make use of the internet by getting a
copy of the menu online. Think about
what sounds appealing to you in case
you’re so busy getting everyone settled
that you don’t get to take a look when
you’re there. You can also show your
child what they have on the menu to get
them excited about going. This should
prevent any food-related problems.
Give them a snack
Try to pick a restaurant that gives out a
freebie like a bread basket. Then your
kids can have something to munch on
from the beginning. If that’s not possible,
order an appetizer as soon as possible.
But to truly be prepared, keep crackers
and other snacks in your bag. Hungry
children are more likely to cause a
scene.
Provide activities
Restaurants that cater to families usually
have crayons and a paper kids’ menu
to keep them entertained. But they can
and do run out. Be savvy and have activities
to keep them busy and you’ll be
less likely to experience a meltdown.
If everyone behaves, be sure to praise
that behavior. Order a dessert that the
whole family can share. It serves as a
great motivator to keep your kids in line
when you dine out and will make them
even more delighted to be good for
next time. Because who doesn’t want a
brownie sundae?
TIPS FOR DINING OUT IN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA

The bypass is
killing small town America
OPINION 7
OUR CHANGING HIGHWAY SYSTEM HAS BYPASSED
SMALL TOWNS IN NORTH CAROLINA, CAUSING MANY
LOCAL BUSINESSES TO CLOSE.
T
he constructions of bypasses are
often aimed at improving highways
in a bid to improve safety and the free fl ow
of traffic. However, given the importance
of travel, these bypasses can affect the
local economy as well as the quality of
life especially in small towns. The current
trend of building highways outside the
downtown has led to most of these small
towns becoming more of a self-contained
community and less of a destination.
New highways are usually built to bypass
commercial areas to avoid congestion
and stop lights. However, in time key
industries/businesses in the towns can
gradually dry up or worst still shut down.
In North Carolina for instance, small towns
are gradually been decimated by the bypasses.
Towns like Bethel, Robersonville,
Hertford and Plymouth among others are
slowly losing business because of highways
being built outside of the downtown.
The bigger businesses like fast food
chains can afford to move to the bypass
area while the smaller businesses are left
to try to survive in an ever decreasing traffi
c area. Most towns that are usually selfsuffi
cient are now almost a ghost town.
Even though these towns may still have
people living in them, but the stores, gas
station, Street Cafe’ are all dead. These
are places that had it all; a gas station,
local grocery stores, cafes’ for chatter.
You could easily purchase everything you
need daily without going anywhere else.
DO BYPASS ROADS PRODUCE ECO-
NOMIC GROWTH?
As earlier pointed out, many small American
towns have bypass roads that must
have been built at great cost. These highways
are usually the economic lifeblood of
a smaller town, and pulling cars away to
a bypass can kill a town for good. Some
small towns actually do ask for bypasses
in a bid to preserve the small town life or
to get traffic off their roads. And maybe
they do. But the question is; Are there not
better ways to keep people moving, calm
traffic, and boost the economy? Businesses
that are reliant on through-traffi c
are often adversely affected, such as
restaurants, gas stations, hotels, bars.
The failing conditions in the economy and
the drop in quality of life will often lead to
people moving out of these communities.
Small towns that had depended upon a
natural resource or local industry as its
biggest employer and economic component
(think coal, steel, and textiles) saw
such industries relocate to places where
labor is cheaper. The resultant effect of
all these trends taken together includes
shrinking small town local economies,
underemployed workers, and struggling
small businesses that fi nd it diffi cult to obtain
operating loans and credit. For such
business, the next thing would be to sell if
possible or maybe just go out of business.
However, is there a way to salvage the
situation? Can we reverse the course?
LOOKING BEYOND THE BYPASS
Most of these small towns lost their investments
as a result of the multiple reasons
stated above. The good news is that in
some small town in America, some of the
older buildings are been repurpose. And
some of these are turned into new shops
or apartment to get the most out of those
previous investments. It might also be
benefi cial for communities to undertake
some planning to determine the challenges
to development, and then fi gure
out incentives or opportunities..
City leaders should also make conditions
favorable to micro manufacturing companies.
Micro manufacturing such as (such
as, 3d printing companies, small drone
and electronics manufacturing) has the
capability to change small towns in this
area because small cottage industries will
start to look for reasonable spaces to grow
soon. Technology is advancing in this area
at a fast rate. Micro manufacturers will be
able to make and ship products from any
small town and compete if conditions are
right for them to thrive in their location.
Although, the number of industrial giants
has reduced over the years, there may be
small businesses looking for a place to
set up their business. More than one-fi fth
of the United States $15 trillion economy
is in manufacturing. Moreover, there have
been noticeable rise in the “service” and
“knowledge” businesses, which can be
located in pretty much anywhere.
UTILIZING EXISTING ASSETS TO
LEVERAGE
Small towns can also attract new businesses
and industries by increasing their
economic competitiveness. Focus should
be placed on community assets, as it
holds the key to attracting investments.
Are there natural resources that can be
leveraged to put the town back on the
map? What about medical resources, a
hospital, college or a technical institute?
Are there policies/regulations that can
be implemented to bring back residents?
Once the community identifi es its assets
and the policies are right, it will be much
easier to market the town to business
brokers or reach out to developers. All
the solutions stated above require good
thinking, planning, steady leadership both
in politics and the private sector.
Bottom line
Not every small town can regain its
commercial center; some may lack the
necessary asset (human capital, location
or even proximity to modest investment
opportunity) that can help boost their
economy. Conversely, many small towns
do have an awful lot to offer, both in plain
human possibility and urban form. Investors
will see the novelty value of what is
going on in the community and this will
certainly be very positive for the town in
the future.

WIND
TURBINES
Wind power has been recognized globally as a
source of renewable energy and that’s why turbines
are being installed. In recent years, Wind power
has become increasingly popular because it generates
electricity without burning fossil fuels or emitting
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Despite the
fact that wind turbines are a familiar sight in much of
the U.S., wind power still accounts for an estimated
4% of the power sector. There’s no doubt about the
immense potential for wind energy, in fact experts
suggests that wind power can easily supply more
than 20% of U.S. and world electricity. This blog-post
enumerates some of the arguments for and against
wind energy to help you see its immense potential for
the future. Many of the arguments against wind power
follow a pattern. Many people dislike or fear advanced
technology - technophobia. Some of the arguments
against wind turbines include the following:
1. Costs
The high maintenance cost claimed by many is highly
debatable. Both small residential wind turbines and
utility-scale wind farms usually rely heavily on fi nancial
incentives. This is basically to give wind energy a
fair chance in the fi erce competition against already
established energy sources like coal and fossil fuels.
Just like the auto industry developed the automobile
to what it is today, in time wind turbines will be a reliable
energy source. It is also interesting to note that
the prices have continually decreased over the years
since 1980, up to 80% reduction in prices thanks to
increased demand and technological advancements.
2. Threat to Flying creatures
The chances of surviving a direct hit from a rotating
wind turbine blade is very slim for bats, birds and other
fl ying creatures. Conversely, some environmentalists
have blown this issue out of proportions. Studies reported
that U.S. Wind turbines results in an estimated
10,000 to 440,000 avian fatalities. However, the same
study revealed that collisions with buildings may result
in the death of about 976 million birds. Furthermore in
recent years, turbine designs have changed radically.
The blades are now solid, implying that there are
no lattice structures to attract birds looking to perch.
Moreover, the surface area of the blades are much
larger, hence they don’t have spin as fast as blades
with smaller surface area to generate power. Modern
design turbines are now mounted on tubular towers
and their blades spin only about 15 times per minute.
Slower-moving blades mean fewer bird collisions.
3. Noise
For most people living in proximity of wind turbines,
noise may be a problem because they are not quiet.
The sounds wind turbines produce are usually foreign
to the rural setting where they are often used.
However, with the signifi cant improvements in turbine
technology, the noise has reduced considerably. The
noise of wind turbines do not also obstruct normal
daily activities, such as quietly talking to one’s neighbor.
Latest designs show momentous improvements
compared to previous models and produce less noise.
4. Looks
People have varying reactions to the sight of wind
turbines, some people see elegant symbols of environmental
progress and economic development of
modern technology, while others might see industrial
infringement in rural and natural landscapes. When
compared to other major sources of energy (nuclear,
solar and coal) wind turbines leave a smaller footprint
on land. There are several ways by which this problem
can be mitigated. Wind turbines may be built outside
urban areas, painted with a neutral color or designing
the turbine uniformly to minimize the visual impact.
Enormous Potential
As highlighted in the introduction of this article, wind
power has an incredible potential in the next decade.
Research revealed that the worldwide potential of
wind power is more than 400 TW (terawatts). Even
though, wind power only accounts for a small percentage
of the total worldwide electricity production,
the capacity is increasing at an unbelievable rate of
25percent per year (2010). Not only will this help in the
fi ght against global warming, but will also contribute to
lowering costs.
In conclusion
The development of numerous large wind farms (both
on and offshore) is on right at this moment, the future
of wind power looks promising. It will be fascinating to
see what lies in the future. The U.S. is working hard to
produce at least 20% of its electricity by wind power
by the year 2030. For the sake of our planet, rural
economic revitalization, national security and resource
preservation we must encourage a renewable energy
economy. Wind energy can be a basis of that sustainable
energy future because it is affordable, does not
cause environmental pollution, generates hazardous
wastes, or deplete natural resources. Embracing
wind power today will lay the foundation for a healthy
tomorrow.
GET RICH QUICK !
How often do we receive this message each day in our email
or blasted to us over the airwaves? Too many to count and
so much so that we become numb to the message.
Here is exactly how to get rich quick. Count your blessings.
What? You have no blessings? Oops! Think again! Everyone
can fi nd some blessings if they but look more closely.
Love:
The love of your family and friends and your love of humanity.
Perhaps you fi nd ‘love’ a strange word to use so you do not call
it ‘love’ per se; perhaps you call it a deep sense of wishing the
very best for those closest to you; and an abiding positive wish
for all the best of life for them. This feeling, that many call ‘love’
is the fountain from which all other blessings fl ow.
Your job, vocation or profession:
Even though there may be days you dread the clamor of the
alarm clock, and you drag yourself out of bed to face another
day of problems to solve and people that try your patience it is
after all a blessing.
Many people do not have even a job, much less a vocation or
profession. Look beyond the rude people and problems and see
them as an opportunity to make a difference in some way. You
may not change those rude people into mild mannered, genteel
people but you can change you and how you react to them.
This is your opportunity to practice patience and tolerance and
perhaps these people will recognize this seed and plant it within
themselves.
“Day by day in every way I am getting better and better.” This
quote was made famous by the French hypnotist Emile Coue’.
This is a wonderful quote to keep in mind when you fi nd yourself
slipping into a morass of negative thinking. Our minds are more
powerful than we give them credit for being. It is truly amazing
that our subconscious mind will grab on to just one negative
thought and refuse to let it go, whereas it may take several times
(or several hundred) positive thoughts to reprogram that thought,
but it will happen with perseverance.
So, the next time you are feeling low self-esteem and getting
ready to throw yourself a pity-party, or are overwhelmed with
your bills, just remember: Get Rich Quick! Count Your Blessings!
CHALLENGES
LOOK AT SITUATIONS FROM ALL ANGLES, AND YOU
WILL BECOME MORE OPEN.
- DALAI LAMA
ife is full of full of challenges
L and it is not going to be meaningful
if we quit over these challenges.
Everyone goes through
a rough path in their life before
reaching the smoother part. There
are two wills in this earth, one is
God’s will and another one is our
own will. What we are about to
choose is always a challenge in our
life. It is clear from the scriptures
that our own will leads to destruction,
but doing God’s will always
lead to blessings. My thought
which I want to share with regards
to the will of God is, many believe
that doing the will of God in their
life brings earthly blessings.
We might have heard many
sermons in Isaiah 6. But when
we read the passages of Isaiah
6 closely, we can see another
picture with regards to the will of
God. There was a real message
that God called people, equipped
them, and brought success. The
message we received was very
optimistic. It seemed obvious that
God called people into ministry
to make them and their ministries
successful.
But nobody cared much about the
consecutive verses after the Lord’s
calling Isaiah into the ministry that
the people he preached to would
never listen, and never change. We
never really talked about how one
can be a faithful failure. We never
asked ourselves what it means that
a person can be called to a ministry
that will be unsuccessful. What
happens is that we apply the same
standards that “the world” uses to
the church. I desperately needed
to ask this question. I wish I would
have been wise enough to notice
that God was up front with Isaiah,
and told him nobody would listen.
Whoever Isaiah was, he was somebody
who really sacrifi ced for the
ministry that he was called into. It is
a true sign of obedience that he not
only knew what he was getting into
but that he lived through 60 years
of fruitless ministry. It is almost as
if he suffered punishment for his
obedience, even though we expect
God to bless and reward us for our
faithfulness.
One reason that I love the Bible so
much is it challenges our assumptions.
God often does not work the
way that we expect. Isaiah, for example,
ministered for a long time,
likely over 60 years. No matter how
much he warned, people never
changed. I am impressed with the
tenacity to continue to prophesy for
a whole lifetime, without success.
Always trust God and do his will.
This alone can be a blessing in our
life. Are you ready to service God
and do His will even though there
is no success?
INSPIRATION 11
TRAVEL TIPS
e love taking trips, whether it’s
W a short road trip, or a longer trip
by air to some distant exotic place.
But all too often we fail to plan for our
trip and the result is frustration and
annoyance.
1. For road trips, get the right maps
and plan your route thoroughly. Everything
won’t go exactly to plan, but
at least you’ll have much fewer nasty
surprises.
2. Never, ever make a joke about
bombs or terrorists near security at
an airport. Many people have jokingly
mentioned they have a small bomb
in their case as their luggage is being
inspected. Later at the police station
they deeply regretted their stupidity.
3. Be immediately suspicious in
airports, railway or bus stations when
someone bumps into you. It may be a
pickpocket. Also be aware if something
is spilled on you, or a spot on
your clothing is pointed out to you.
These things are designed to distract
your attention from what is really going
4. While cruises make planning
easy with their all in charges, there
is likely to be many extra items that
you should budget for. These include,
taxes, surcharges and fees, tipping,
drinks, some shore excursions, shopping
purchases, etc.
5. The most obvious thing to check on
before setting off on a foreign trip is
the state of the local weather where
you are going. You don’t want to arrive
in a tee shirt if it’s snowing, or in a
fur coat if it’s in the 90s.
6. When travelling with children bring
along recent photos of each one. If
a child gets lost, the photo will prove
invaluable in helping to locate the
child again.
7. A trip to a theme park will suffer
from a lack of careful planning. Some
parks are so big that planning is essential.
Get a list of all the rides and
a map of the park, as well as opening
and closing times, before setting off.

developers and users alike. Android smartphones
never dissapoint by introducing
the best and fastest tech-enabled smartphones
throughout the year. What makes
Android OS Smartphones the best-selling
and innovative is its acceptance of ideas.
There are around 500 companies worldwide
producing Android smartphones with
the latest features and cutting-edge hardware
and software technology in them.
Let’s jump into the Android world, and find
out what are the next big flagship smartphones
coming from the Android family.
ELECTRONICS 13
Android is an OS that does not restrict other phone producing
companies from using it. The quality of the android
phone has gone so high because of the competition that
exists between the phone producing companies.
Xiaomi MI 7
It is affordable, up-to-date, and faster than most of
the smartphones double or triple its worth. Xiaomi
is known for its brisk and impressive quality smartphones.
Every time, they come up with unique idea
implemented, the new MI 7 is all about better software
and sturdy hardware. MI 7 possesses a whopping
128 and 256 GB storage options, an impeccable dual
camera with a 13mp selfie cam. The chipset used is
Snapdragon 845, the same one used by Samsung in
its upcoming smartphone worth three times its price.
The 6 GB RAM is there to support the load of a 256
GB storage; the device runs on MIUI 9, i.e., the latest
Android Oreo or Android 8, one of the first devices to
run the latest OS. The expected price is $450-550.
smartphones, the software, or fan following due to its Korean
technology praised in most of the world. LG G7 may release
with the fastest processor chip to date, i.e., the most awaited
Snapdragon 835 chip by Qualcomm that has already been
installed in Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5, so it’s
important to get one for LG G7 to remain in the competition.
More features will be introduced in the design and software,
the OLED screen with much sharper PPI than American and
Chinese companies offer, the price would be around USD
700-800 that is lower than most of the android smartphones
releasing with more or less same features. The rumor is that
the latest LG G7 will feature a curved OLED, faster wireless
charging, and greater battery life.
Samsung Galaxy S9
What’s bigger than a Samsung Galaxy S-series
flagship smartphone? The S-Series smartphones by
Samsung are sold most expensive and are released
with the largest stock around the world. Samsung
Electronics rely heavily on the Flagship smartphone.
The release will be in first quarter of 2018 on its scheduled
date, Samsung Galaxy S9 will come up with killer
features, Slow motion videos with 1000 fps support will
just do fine. There would be an OLED screen, and the
price will cross $800 per box, the processor would be
Snapdragon 845, the fingerprint technology is likely to
become more sophisticated with more sensors to be
added, plus the battery life would be larger in the same
size. charging, and greater battery life.

14 GETTING READY FOR WINTER
J
ust because you
have done the last
of your autumn lawn
tasks doesn’t mean you
are completely done;
you still have to winterize
your lawn mower
in time for the cold
months. Winterizing
a lawn mower means prepping it for the season’s
storage. When you properly winterize your lawn
mower, you can save money from repairs and
you can even prolong the life of your equipment.
Follow these steps to have your lawn
mower ready in the spring.
Empty the gas tank. This will prevent remaining
gas from clogging your carburetor. And you don’t
want that to happen because it will mean spending
hundreds of dollars for repairs. So before you store
your lawn mower for winter, turn on the mower until
it eats up all the remaining gas and stops on its
own. Restart the engine. If the lawn mower doesn’t
start, you have successfully emptied the gas tank.
WINTERIZING YOUR LAWN MOWER
Change oil. Refi ll your oil tank with fresh oil, and
make sure the amount is suffi cient: not too much,
not too little. Dispose of the old oil properly as described
by hazardous waste management policies
in your area. Do not pour it down the sink, sewer,
or ground. If you can, fi nd gas stations in your
area that collect old oil for proper waste disposal.
Clean or change the air filter. You can
clean the air fi lter if it is made of plastic, but
buy replacements for fi lters made of paper.
It is recommended to replace air fi lters at
least once during the mowing season.
Remove the spark plug. Then, spray lubricating
oil (WD-40) through the plug hole and crank
the engine a number of times to distribute the
oil. Now, reinstall the plug. If your spark plug,
however, is quite old, you need to buy a replacement.
You know you need to replace it if the
lawn mower reaches a hundred hours of use.
Clean the undersides. Disconnect the plug
wire just in case to keep the mower from starting.
Grass clippings and other foreign materials
may have stuck between blades, so scrape
them off to prevent rusting. You can also hose
them down for easy dislodging. Scrub the undersides
and the surface area to remove rust
using a steel wool. To remove greasy materials,
use warm and soapy water. Allow the lawn
mower to dry before storing. Remember to wear
gloves when cleaning the lawn mower to prevent
hand injuries. Get a can of spray paint and paint
any bare metal on the deck to prevent rust.
Sharpen the blades. Although you can have them
sharpened before re-using, it is better to sharpen
them during winterization to save some time. You
can either sharpen the blades on your own or send
them to a professional. Apply protective oil to keep
the blades from rusting during the cold months.
Store the lawn mower in a secure place.
You can keep it in your garage or basement,
or wherever it is safe. Cover it with plastic and
place mothballs near the lawn mower, so no
rodents will take residence in it. Properly winterizing
a lawn mower assures you that you
have something to work with come spring.
SIMPLE STEPS OF WINTERIZING YOUR LAWN
When you start feeling the coming of winter,
you should prepare yourself for various
winterizing tasks that must be done to make
sure that everything will be ready for spring.
Aside from the interiors of your home, you should
also place importance on your lawn when preparing
for the change in season. During the
colder months, what do you think will happen
to your lawn? It doesn’t stop existing just because
you won’t see it as much. It is up to you
to keep it healthy and ready for the next spring.
During winter, the lawn doesn’t really die, it only
becomes dormant because of the cold. Your task
is to prevent certain problems from developing
so that the soil can be fully utilized in the spring.
Help the soil retain as many nutrients that it can
absorb before the winter arrives. While winter
still hasn’t arrived, you can keep on mowing and
watering the grass on the lawn so that it takes
in nutrients before it rests in the next season.
Here are some things that can help you prepare
the area for the wintry months ahead.
1. All debris and fallen leaves should be raked
from the lawn. Through this, the sunlight can still
penetrate the area while it is still there. This will
also help balance its pH content. Through raking,
you help lawn become exposed to better aeration.
This helps in making the grass appear greener
during spring. Raking also prevents viruses from
developing that may be caused by the molds
that will form if the area is covered with snow.
2. At fall, you must practice applying weed control
on the location. Through this, weeds won’t
be a problem next year when the lawn is ready
to start growing. By doing this, you are not only
eliminating obvious weeds but you are also
helping in making sure that there won’t be any
weeds that will grow in the lawn the following
year. Apply a good weed and feed to your lawn.
3. Seed the lawn while the weather is still warm.
There are just a few things that you can do
in winterizing the lawn. Even as the season
changes, you must still tend to the soil to
make sure that it stays healthy and is ready
to be used by your grass in the spring
GETTING READY FOR WINTER
15
How do you prepare a house for winter? Here
are tips that can help you with the task.
1. First, you should call an HVAC professional to
inspect the heating system. They will do vital furnace
inspection and clean the ducts. You should
stock furnace fi lters and change them every
month. The furnace must be clear of fl ammable
materials that may cause fi res. Purchasing a programmable
thermostat will save electricity.
2. Check for crevice cracks at the exterior of your
home. Especially around pipes. If you fi nd any
cracks or holes, seal them ASAP. A good product
for this is the foam sealer in a can available at
your local hardware store.
3. For the doors, you can use weather stripping
to prevent cold air from coming inside the house.
To achieve the same for windows, fi x or re-caulk
them. If the house has a basement, you can protect
the window wells by covering these with plastic
shields. It’s time to keep the summer screens
for later use and get glass replacements installed.
WINTERIZING YOUR HOME
You can put storm windows if you have these.
4. The fi replace must be ready for the coming
season. Put a cap at the top of the chimney so
you can keep out birds and rodents. If you haven’t
cleaned the chimney for a while, call someone to
remove creosote and soot from this part. Stock up
chopped wood or fi rewood keep it in a dry place.
Check the damper of the fi replace to be sure it is
closing and opening.
5. You should add insulation to the attic if needed.
More insulation will keep warm air from rising to
the roof that might lead to ice dams. While on the
roof, inspect for worn-out tiles and roof shingles
and replace them while you still have time. You
must be sure that water cannot enter your house
through the roof. Clean gutters from debris.
These are a few steps you should consider in
winterizing your house.
Do your research and start before the winter
comes.
Cold weather could be harsh on everybody,
hard on your home, yard and garden and
vehicles. Cars exposed to cold weather have the
possibility of having the engines not work properly.
Wheels and tires could get damaged, and the
paint or the body of the car could develop rust.
Winterizing or winterization is the process of preparing
your property, in this situation, your car for
the harsh temperature of the winter.
There are easy steps you could do when winterizing
your car.
• Tire Check
Roads are diffi cult during winter, worn tires can
cause diffi culty with braking and steering. This
could lead to car crashes. Get your tires checked
for proper infl ation and wear before winter. Proper
tire pressure helps minimise damage by potholes.
• Engine oil
Engine oil is critical for your car. During the winter,
moisture can build up in an engine and having
fresh oil can help the life of your car. Get an oil
change with the reccommended oil for your vehicle
at the recommended intervals.
• Check visibility
In any kind of weather, visibility is essential. But
during winter, it is very important. Inspect the
WINTERIZING YOUR CAR
wipers and the wiper fl uid to ensure that they are
working. If your wipers date back to more than a
year, then it is time for some replacement. Also
check the wiper fl uid. You do not want to run out of
it while in the middle of the road and snow.
You would also like to check if all of your car’s
lights are working. Aside from seeing okay from
your car, you would also like your car to be seen
by opposite traffi c.
• Battery check
Cold weather would normally reduce your battery
life by as much as 50%. Get your car battery
tested if it is over 3 years old.
• De-icing
Frozen locks are another problem. You could
always buy glycerine from hardware, auto part
stores and even discount stores. Glycerine can
be used for de-icing. Keep a bottle handy in your
garage and in your car compartment box.
• Check your coolants
Cold weather can cause damage to your engine if
the anti freeze is weak or missing. Make sure that
the cooling system gets checked every two years
or as specifi ed by the vehicle manufacturer. You
could check the car manual for that. This would
help corrosion from building up in your cooling
system. Coolants would require mixture of antifreeze
and water, depending on the temperature.
Again, check your car manual for this information.
• Emergency kit
It pays to be careful and prepared. Think about
storing important things in your trunk, aside from
car tires and some tools. Be prepared. Have some
blankets, boots, radio, extra engine oil and coolant
and a fl ashlight may come in handy. Winterizing
your car will not totally prevent any danger, being
caught in snow storms or in snow banks would
require you to be prepared.

Step1: Sheer Foundation
It is important to have a clean and moisturized skin for a no-makeup look. The fi rst step to
getting the no-makeup look is to smooth out uneven skin with a gentle touch of color. This
can be achieved through a BB or a CC cream.
Step 2: Conceal and Set
The second step is to conceal any blemishes with a small concealer brush. Also, pat the
under eye area with ring fi nger to get a fi nished look. Once you’ve applied the concealer,
apply the setting powder by gently pressing it into the skin.
Step 3: Natural Flush
Create a natural appearance of fl ush on the cheeks. For that matter, cream blushes prove
to be the best. Just pat and blend the cream on the apple of your cheeks ensuring that the
edges are thoroughly blended.
Why Use Natural Remedies?
P
harmaceuticals are not meant to give us health
but to mask symptoms by interfering with natural
body functions. They normally have side effects.
In the long run, continuously taking medicines for
chronic conditions creates serious health problems.
Even antibiotics destroy the good microbes with the
bad creating an imbalance in the body. This is why
one must understand the benefits of natural remedies
and take advantage of them.
1. Natural remedies work.
Natural remedies have been used effectively for
thousands of years. This is why pharmaceutical
companies study medicinal herbs, extract the active
ingredients, copy them in the laboratory and register
patents on them as new drugs. So red yeast rice
extract is sold as statins, the active ingredient in
aspirin is salicylic acid which is found in willow bark,
peas, jasmine, beans, clover and certain grasses and
trees while morphine is an extract of opium poppy.
So why not simply use the natural remedies, the
sources of most pharmceuticals?
2. Natural remedies are safe
The majority of herbs have no side effects. They can
be used for almost anyone, including babies and
young children, and pregnant women and nursing
mothers without worrying too much about over-dosage.
They are not addictive either.
3. They are affordable
Herbs are very cheap to buy. You can even grow
some of them in your garden and dry them yourself
or make your own tinctures and teas at no cost.
4. They are readily available
When you travel and someone becomes sick, you
will find all the herbs that you need at the grocery
store and special ones at the health food store.
5. There is a wide variety
For each human ailment, there is a range of herbs
that you can use. By trial and error you can find out
which one works better for you.
6. They are versatile
Each medicinal herb can be used for a variety of
ailments. Hence you will find that one herb can take
care of your skin, your wounds, your digestive problems
and your respiratory problems.
Well, natural remedies can be food and medicine at
the same time. While you can use a herb to flavor
food, you can use it for medicine, for skin care, hair
care and oral care. The good thing is that you can
make your own medicines and personal care products
at home and be in control of your health.

еаlthу еаting means bеing mindful оf what уоu put intо
уоur bоdу. Timе and timе again, we’ve heard thе old
аdаgе thаt wе аrе whаt we еаt. Hоwеvеr, most people ѕtill
Eating a well-balanced diet mеаnѕ соnѕuming a vаriеtу of
fооdѕ. On thе one hаnd, wе nееd tо limit our consumption of
fооdѕ riсh in ѕugаr, salt, fаtѕ, and рrеѕеrvаtivеѕ. By eating a
