Karen has served the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma for the past eleven years with her service through the behavioral health department. She began her nursing career in 1990 working as a psychiatric nurse at an inpatient facility for ten years. She returned to school and obtained her BSN in 2004. In 2006, she earned her MSN and began practicing as a NP. Karen has consistently provided excellent care to the mental health patients of the Choctaw Nation Health Services over the last 11 years. She implemented the telemental health services at Choctaw Nation Health Service Authority, which has allowed more patients to be reached by improving access to services, in addition it has increased patient compliance with care. Karen is a lifelong learner and recently earned her DNP. She now serves as a preceptor for other nurses earning their DNP. Currently, she is the president elect of the ONA and has maintained an active membership in the ONA over the years. Karen is a member of the Choctaw Nation Health Services Authority medical staff. Saint Francis Hospital South – Excellence in Workplace Environment Saint Francis Hospital South is being recognized by the Oklahoma Nurses Association with the Excellence in the Workplace Environment Award. This award is presented to organizations that have developed positive work environments. These organizations must have developed an innovative and effective program, approach or overall environment that promotes excellent nursing care, creating a positive environment for nurses to work and supports nurses in their practice. Saint Francis Hospital South has provided Excellence in the Workplace by its team focus on preserving the Catholic Heritage. The hospital offers its nurses and healthcare workers the opportunity to serve the communities both outside and within the walls of the hospital by participating in food drives, the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and activities such as an Angel Tree that provides Christmas for employees who need a little extra help during the holiday season. Saint Francis Hospital South is the only hospital in Tulsa who has received an A on its report card for four consecutive quarters by Leapfrog as a result of their publicly reported safety and quality measures. In clinical quality, Saint Francis Hospital South out-ranked the national median and exceeded the top 10th percentile in the nation in Patient Safety and by scoring 100% in clinical measures such as Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Acute MI. This excellence in safety and quality is a direct result of the commitment and efforts of the professional nurses at South. The team of nurses and healthcare workers at Saint Francis Hospital South is committed to assuring patients have an excellent experience during their stay by focusing on patient and caregiver engagement and communication. In doing so, the hospital exceeded the national median in 8 out of 10 dimensions of the patient satisfaction survey and received national recognition for patient experience in its Endoscopy Department. Saint Francis Hospital South has achieved top performance in a number of nationally recognized rating systems only by first taking care of its nurses and the entire workforce, and recognizing the unique talents that each employee brings to the team. Dr. Mark Brandenburg – Friend of Nursing Award The Oklahoma Nurses Association is recognizing Dr. Mark Brandenburg with the Friend of Nursing Award. This award is conferred on non-nurses who have rendered valuable assistance to the nursing profession. Their contributions and assistance are of statewide significance to nursing. While at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Dr. Brandenburg was Founding Director of the Oklahoma Institute for Disaster and Emergency Medicine, and the Founding Residency Program Director for Oklahoma’s only allopathic emergency medicine residency program. Dr. Brandenburg has authored over 25 peer-reviewed medical publications, three textbook chapters, and two infant and child injury prevention books. He also has several teaching and research awards, to include the OU College of Medicine Faculty Crimson Apple Award for Teaching Excellence, and C.T. Thompson, M.D. Award for Excellence in Trauma Care. Dr. Mark Brandenburg has been a leading example of a mentor, clinical trainer and friend in a workplace that is a leading environment for burnout, employee turnover and provider grief. December 2017, January, February 2018 The Oklahoma Nurse 13 maintain his teams physical and emotional well beings. Dr. Brandenburg has fostered a nurse practitioner friendly workplace and community, ensuring his team of physicians and nurse practitioners work hand-in-hand to provide patient-centered, collaborative care. He has supported and trusted nurse practitioners working semi-autonomy in his emergency department. His interest has gone above and beyond to be interested in research regarding nurse practitioners in rural medicine. For new graduate APRNs, Dr. Brandenburg provided an extensive orientation process in the emergency department and inpatient services, with hands-on skills and soft-skills that will provide lifelong opportunities to allow nurse practitioners to continue to grow as professionals. He strives to promote advancing full practice authority for clinical nurse practitioners in Oklahoma and works to bridge any gaps in barriers between physicians and nurse practitioner relationships. Steve Drabek, M.D. – Friend of Nursing Dr. Steven Drabek is being honored by the Oklahoma Nurses Association with the Friend of Nursing Award. Dr. Drabek understands the role of an Advanced Practice Nurse and has always been willing to collaborate in a respectful manner. He has a passion of caring for patients and putting the patient at the center of his/her care. While the current push for Full Practice Authority has resulted in a few physicians working directly against our cause, Dr. Drabek accompanied APRNs to the Capitol to speak to legislators in support of our practice. He also wrote a letter to the editor in support of full practice authority for APRNs. He is truly a friend to all nurses. Dr. Drabek is a great compassionate human being and a very dedicated physician. He has received a number of awards and recognition including Oklahoma Academy of Physician Assistants – Physician of the Year Award; Outstanding Physician Preceptor at the OU Health Science Center and awarded Humanitarian of the year by his community Chamber of Commerce.
