FIRE SAFETY “Learners successfully completing all of the required criteria for their chosen qualification will be awarded the FIA AO qualification certificate, duly recognising their achievement to Level 3 on the QCF” Qualification structure Each qualification is made up of four units, all of which require a pass for the award of the qualification. Three of the units are common to all of the qualifications. Learners are required to beging by completing the Foundation Unit before progressing to any of the other units. In what order must the units for the qualification be studied? The Foundation Unit must be taken first and then any other unit can be studied in any order. Will learners gain a certificate? Yes. Learners successfully completing all of the required criteria for their chosen qualification will be awarded the FIA AO qualification certificate, duly recognising their achievement to Level 3 on the QCF. Move towards qualifications Why has the FIA shifted from training to new qualifications? Are the old training courses still valid? Simple answer? Yes. The existing FIA units are still incredibly valuable. They serve the industry very well and remain just as relevant and current as they ever have done. It will take a while for the industry to shift across to the new formalised qualifications. For that reason, the FIA will still continue to teach the old courses until the switchover to the new qualifications (which contain at least double the amount of information than the old training courses) at the beginning of 2018. Technicians currently undertaking the old FIA training courses will still gain indispensable knowledge that will help them on the road to success. While they might receive a certificate of completion, that unfortunately doesn’t make them ‘qualified technicians’. This is a phrase that’s used frequently within the fire industry, but as from the launch of the new qualifications, only those that have actually undertaken the qualifications and passed successfully will be able to use the above term as a badge of proficiency and professionalism. Current FIA training courses remain popular due to their high level of technical knowledge and recognition within the industry among employers and technicians alike. The standard is high and well respected, but the new qualifications go one step further, increasing the amount of content delivered and the degree of time spent in the classroom developing that knowledge and understanding. From now on, a higher bar has been set for the fire industry in a determined bid to increase the level of professionalism throughout.
