With Wallace Signed, Richard Petty
Motorsports Still has Plenty to Finalize
It will be months before Darrell “Bubba”
Wallace Jr. makes his first official start for
Richard Petty Motorsports as a full-time
competitor in the Monster Energy NASCAR
Cup Series.
Wallace, 24, was named the 2018 driver of
the legendary No. 43.
Announcing the hiring of Wallace was just
one piece of the organization’s latest puzzle.
Still to be determined are such top-shelf
items as sponsorship, manufacturer support
and potential team alliance.
Co-owner Richard Petty recently said
announcements concerning sponsorship will
be made “later on,” there are “options” as
far as manufacturer alignment is concerned
and that decision will dictate any possible
alignment with another organization.
RPM officials announced in September
that current driver Aric Almirola and primary
sponsor Smithfield would not return to the
organization for 2018.
On the
manufacturer front,
the group has fielded
Ford entries since
2010.
“We are doing one
thing at a time,” Petty,
80, said. “We decided
just to go ahead and
get Bubba all signed
up, get that behind us,
so that we can then sit
down and say, ‘OK,
what is our next best
move?’
“Bubba will be
involved in that part
of it, too, because he’s
going to be a big, big part of RPM for the
coming years. … Again, there’s a bunch of
12 ITJ www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
irons in the fire. There’s going to be a bunch
of different things that we’re going to do.
When you see us at Daytona … it’s going to
be a completely different RPM than what it’s
been in the past.”
Wallace made four starts in the No.
43 earlier this year while Almirola was
recuperating from a back injury,
recording a best finish of 11th (at
Kentucky). He is a six-time winner in
the Camping World Truck Series; he
competed with Roush Fenway Racing
in the XFINITY Series and was fourth
in that series’ points standings when
the team was shut down in June.
“If you look back through
NASCAR history, you’ll find out that
(every) 10 or 12 years a crowd comes
through,” Petty said. “You know,
[David] Pearson, [Cale] Yarborough,
[Richard] Petty came through. Then the
next crowd comes up with Darrell [Waltrip],
[Dale] Earnhardt. Then Jeff Gordon comes
through, Jimmie Johnson’s crowd comes
through.”
NASCAR is going through another cycle,
14 ITJ hundreds of jobs at www.TruckJobSeekers.com
he said, and “We wanted to
be part of that change this
time.
“We felt like then you
have the new drivers, a
bunch of new drivers,
coming into Cup … that
Bubba has already raced
with for the last 10 or 12
years,” Petty said. “There
are probably six or eight of
them to come up together.
Now they’ve made it to the
Cup Series.
“We wanted to be
involved in that part of
it, felt like that Bubba was going to be our
best bet to be right up to the cutting edge of
what’s going on.”
Mack Trucks Donates Mack Anthem
Model to Share the Road Highway
Safety Program
In addition to extending its sponsorship
of the American Trucking Associations’
(ATA) Share the Road highway safety program,
Mack Trucks announced that it will
donate a 2018 Mack Anthem 70-inch Stand
Up Sleeper model to the effort.
“Safety is a key focus for Mack, something
we’ve demonstrated through the design of our
new Anthem model and the many safety-focused
features it includes,” said Jonathan Randall,
senior vice president of sales for Mack
Trucks North America. “Mack’s commitment
to safety goes beyond our trucks to those who
share our nation’s roads. We’re proud to support
the Share the Road drivers and their work
to reach millions of people across the country
with crucial messages about highway safety.”
The Share the Road program relies on
professional truck drivers to conduct live
safety exhibitions for students, media and
policy makers demonstrating how to drive
safely alongside semi-trucks. Each Share the
Road driver has an outstanding driving record,
including many with one million or more
accident-free miles.
The drivers will travel the country in their
new 2018 Mack Anthem 70-inch Stand Up
Sleeper model to teach the driving public
about truck stopping distances, demonstrate
potential truck blind spots and share other
safety considerations that can help ensure safe
travel for everyone on the road.
“Mack Trucks has a long legacy of promoting
highway safety, so we are very fortunate
that ATA and Mack Trucks continue to partner
together to advance highway safety through
ATA’s Share the Road program,” said ATA
President and CEO Chris Spear. “When teaching
the motoring public about highway safety,
our best tool is the Share the Road Mack Anthem
because it gives people an opportunity
to see what professional truck drivers can see
during their day-to-day work.”
The 2018 Mack Anthem model donated
to the Share the Road program is designed
and engineered for performance, efficiency
and safety. The truck features a 13-liter Mack
MP 8 505C engine with 505 horsepower and
1,860 lb.-ft. of torque paired with Mack’s
12-speed mDRIVE automated manual
transmission, which allows drivers to focus
on the road ahead rather than shifting gears.
The Mack mDRIVE is standard on all Mack
Anthem models.
The Share the Road Anthem will also be
equipped with Mack Road Stability Advantage
cruise control and lane departure warning
capabilities. Both systems are standard on all
Mack Anthem models.
HUNTER’S
WORLD
Hunting By Moon Phase: Your Best Season Ever
By David Rose
Every season, millions of hunters take to
the woods with renewed enthusiasm and vigor.
Unfortunately, many come away empty handed,
returning day after day to face similar results.
It’s every hunter’s biggest dilemma, but some
have found the perfect
solution, and
that is hunting by
moon phase.
Fishermen have
long been aware of
the powerful influence
of the moon on
the tides and chart
the various phases
of the moon in order
to determine the best
time to fish. Similarly,
animals are in
tune with their surroundings
and certain
shifts in natural
forces trigger corresponding responses in the
wild.
For years, researchers have studied the reaction
of wildlife to changes in the position of
the sun and moon and have come up with some
rather interesting observations in relation to
hunting by moon phase.
So, how does this work? How can paying
attention to the phases of the moon help ensure
a hunter’s success?
FEELING SAFER UNDER THE COVER OF
DARKNESS, MANY ANIMALS WILL INCREASE
THEIR ACTIVITY AS DUSK FALLS.
ANIMALS AND THE MOON
Animals in the wild tend to be less active
during daylight hours. Feeling safer under the
cover of darkness,
many animals will
increase their activity
as dusk falls.
However, many
observers have
noted that activity
amongst all animals
is greater when the
moon is full and
that this one form
of hunting by moon
phase -- hunting
during periods of
full moon -- can
yield excellent
results.
In other words,
if you’re aware of
the phases of the
moon, you’re in a
better position to
anticipate the peak
of animal activity. The more active they are, the
better your chances will be of finding them.
MOON PHASE DEER HUNTING
Much of the research that has been done
on this subject has involved hunting deer, and
many hunters swear that hunting by moon
phase is the only way to accurately predict deer
activity.
26 ITJ hundreds of jobs at www.TruckJobSeekers.com
HUNTER’S
WORLD
But the moon doesn’t only have an impact
on deer activity. The various phases of the
moon also seem to have a direct effect on deer
mating patterns, which in turn make them
easier to locate. It’s because of this that moon
phase deer hunting -- as it’s becoming commonly
known -- is quickly gaining acceptance.
Being aware of when the breeding season
begins helps to determine travel patterns and
areas of increased deer activity. When the
breeding season is at its peak, finding deer is
easier and finding more than one in a particular
area more likely.
So what does this have to do with the moon?
A female deer’s reproductive cycle is influenced
by the different phases of the moon, and
peaks in the three or four days surrounding the
second full moon after the autumnal equinox.
When the does are in heat, the bucks begin
rubbing and scraping in an attempt to attract
them. If you know when the full moon occurs,
you can be at the right spot, at the right time,
and have the best chance for success, luring the
bucks into your site.
By being aware of the different moon phases,
deer hunting can be far more successful. But
not only that, it can also help you figure out
when not to hunt. You aren’t going to be successful
after the deer have mated and even the
phase when the bucks are chasing the does can
be pretty fruitless.
By becoming familiar with these patterns
and planning ahead, hunting by moon phase
will almost certainly lead to your best hunting
season ever.
David Rose is an avid outdoorsman and the
creator of QuickPhase Pro, a popular moon
phase software program. Visit http://www.calculatorcat.com/moon_phases
to discover the fun
and easy way to view the phases of the moon
and enjoy a successful hunt.
Take Your Children Hunting
By John Cook
Few things can bring you more joy than to
pursue two of your passions at the same time.
This is easy to do by taking your children hunting
with you. The first time I took my son with
me he was only about 4 years old. We walked a
couple hundred yards behind the house and sat
down on a log. It was only a few minutes later
he said that he needed to go back to the house
to go to the bathroom. There was no talking
him into relieving himself out in the woods, so
back to the house we went. Our first hunting
experience together wasn’t very satisfying or
very long. After this first trip I wasn’t looking
forward to taking him again for a while but in
the years since it was I who had some learning
to do about hunting with children.
After that experience I realized that I did
want my children to hunt with me so I decided
that we would keep trying. Since they had
showed an interest I didn’t want to stifle it by
telling them that they were too young. I wanted
them there with me when they were old enough
but I thought that if I stopped them when they
were young that they may not want to hunt
when they get older.
In the few years since, we have had some
great times together in the woods. Stories about
having young children with you usually do not
conclude with the description of the trophy
buck that you shoot, but the memories of being
there with them are better trophies. I’ll never
forget watching my son jump out of his skin
when a grouse took off and scared him or of the
first buck that he shot.
It is hard for us serious hunters to accept
that sometimes we will go to the woods and
not realistically have an opportunity of shooting
a deer or that the chances could be lessened
because there is someone else with you that
likes to move a lot and is a little noisy. Once
you accept this and just watch them enjoy being
there with you, you can have the time of your
life.
Over the years I have found some ways to
make the hunt more enjoyable for everyone.
Quiet woods will only hold a child’s attention
for a little while and then they will look for
something to do. One of the first things that I
do is to make sure that I have plenty to eat. A
couple of apples and some candy can usually
get another half an hour or so. Not that I eat
any of the candy myself, it’s just for the kids.
I also take something for them to do. Word
search books and crossword puzzles will deter
them from moving around a lot and keep them
interested for a while longer.
The hunt will be very short lived if they get
cold. Make sure that they are dressed warm.
On one hunt I took a sleeping bag for my son
and he stayed nice and warm while the snow
was falling on us. It also helps if you can keep
them sheltered from the wind and rain. We used
to get into an old building and sit, but we now
have a camouflage hunting blind that we use.
Last season we spent several hours in it staying
out of the wind and rain. On one hunt my 8
year old daughter was the first to spot a group
of does that came from behind us. She was real
proud of her accomplishment.
The best way to keep them interested and
coming back is to see game. I take them no
matter what time of the day it is even during
the non peak activity hours. It’s often hard to
get them to go with you at dawn or dusk when
activity is at its peak but it is usually colder
during these hours anyway. They don’t have
to see something to have a good time, but they
will tell everyone about the animals that they
saw.
Last year I had watched a group of young
bucks that would come to a food plot and
feeder. At the end of the season I took my son
and a video camera and we climbed into two
treestands side-by-side. After being there for
about thirty minutes there was a shower of rain
and he wanted to pack it in. I convinced him
that if we could stick it out another thirty minutes
we would probably get to see some deer.
He decided to stay and the deer showed up and
we had a great time watching and videotaping
them. I used the opportunity to try to teach him
that it’s not always easy and that the effort can
pay off in the end. At eleven years old he is
now learning more about hunting and is becoming
a good tracker. I’m hoping that I have two
hunting partners for life.
I have been deer hunting in West Virginia for
close to 30 years. Now I am teaching my children
to hunt and enjoy it more each year. ITJ
