NASCAR To Standardize At-Track
Rosters Beginning In 2018
NASCAR recently announced that it
will standardize at-track team rosters across
all three national series in 2018, providing
a structure for the number of personnel
working on each vehicle during the course of
a race weekend.
The biggest
competition impact
from the rules update
is the the number of
crewmembers who go
over the wall for pit stops moving from six
to five.
According to Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR
Executive Vice President and Chief Racing
Development Officer, the overall objective
for standardized rosters is to promote better
competition through increased parity, to
improve safety and to cast a brighter spotlight
on the sport’s team concept.
“As much as we can possibly level the
playing field and introduce new winners,
that’s really the goal and what we want
for the fans,” O’Donnell said. “And so if
you look at these initiatives with the overthe-wall
crew going to five members, that
fits into our overall structure from a roster
standpoint. We feel like that again puts the
focus on the athletes and also continues down
that line of putting the focus on the teams and
opening it up to as many teams as possible
to continue to win races and therefore put a
better product out there for the fans.”
Regan Smith To Join FOX NASCAR Pit Road
Reporting Team In 2018
FOX Sports has begun
stacking its broadcaster deck
for 2018.
New to the FOX NASCAR
arsenal this year, the
network’s 18th consecutive
season broadcasting
NASCAR races, is veteran
driver Regan Smith, who will
serve as a pit reporter for the
Monster Energy NASCAR
Cup Series and NASCAR
XFINITY Series, in addition
to continuing his role as a
NASCAR Race Hub analyst.
REGAN SMITH
He took a broadcasting
test drive with his race
analyst debut last June at
Iowa Speedway for FS1’s
presentation of the NASCAR
XFINITY Series race.
“When I had the
opportunity to be in the
14 ITJ hundreds of jobs at www.TruckJobSeekers.com
FOX Sports booth at Iowa earlier in the year,
the driver in me was really intrigued by the
TV side of the sport,” Smith said. “So, my
biggest goal in joining pit road is to be able
to give viewers something they didn’t know
before or to better help them understand
something going on with the driver or the
car. Since I am still competing, I can put
into perspective what a driver is feeling at a
particular moment.”
Smith, winner of the prestigious Southern
500 at Darlington Raceway in 2011 and
2008 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series
Rookie of the Year, has regularly appeared
as a driver analyst on FS1’s NASCAR Race
Hub since 2015.
“We’ve enjoyed and appreciated Regan’s
insight in the NASCAR Race Hub studio
but really had our eyes opened to his
broadcasting potential at Iowa last summer,”
said Steve Craddock, FOX Sports SVP
of NASCAR Production. “A fan and peer
favorite, he has proven himself seamless in
translating his years of driving experience to
the viewers at home.”
Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series
For its broadcast of the first half of the
2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series
season, FOX NASCAR is armed with seven
championships’ worth of analysis and insight.
For the third year, Hall of Famer and three-time
champ Darrell Waltrip pairs with four-time
champion Jeff Gordon in the booth for analysis,
with veteran play-by-play announcer Mike Joy,
covering his 43rd Daytona 500 in February, and
former Daytona 500-winning crew chief Larry
McReynolds with race analysis on the strength of his 43 years in the sport.
Delivering stories and updates from pit road are pit reporters Jamie Little, Vince Welch,
Matt Yocum and Smith.
Chris Myers hosts FOX
NASCAR Sunday
and the network’s
race coverage from
the famed Hollywood
Hotel alongside Michael
Waltrip, Darrell Waltrip
and Gordon. FOX
broadcasts 10 of FOX
Sports’ 16 Monster Energy
NASCAR Cup Series
races, while FS1 telecasts
the remaining six.
Western Star 5700XE Delivers
Christmas Tree to Michigan
State Capital
A special load demands a special truck.
That’s why a 2018 Western Star 5700XE
delivered the official Michigan state Christmas
tree to the Capitol building on October
applications, is a revelation.
“That is some beautiful truck,” he said. “It’s
not a logging truck, but I can’t think of a more
impressive vehicle to make the delivery in.
The tree always draws attention, but this year
the truck is also drawing the spotlight.”
The 5700XE is equipped with a Detroit
DD16® engine with a Detroit
27, 2017.
The 5700XE, which was showcased at the
North American Commercial Vehicle (NACV)
show in September, traveled from Atlanta to
Stephenson, Michigan, so the 61-foot white
spruce could be loaded onto a flatbed trailer.
The truck was driven from the Upper
Peninsula to Lansing by Denny Olson, a
long-time logger and champion of Western
Star trucks. Olson, whose usual vehicle is a
1990 Western Star 4964, said the aerodynamic
5700XE, which is designed for over-the-road
DT12® automated manual transmission,
which together give the truck even more
power to transport the heaviest of loads. The
truck, which has an 82-inch High Roof Stratosphere
sleeper, sports a striking Western Star
50th anniversary red-and-white paint job with
wings on either side of the cab.
“Everywhere the truck goes, people and
other drivers want to take a closer look,”
Olson said.
It was only fitting that a Western Star
deliver the Michigan state tree. The engine,
transmission and axles were built in-state by
Detroit Diesel Corp., a Daimler Trucks North
America subsidiary located in Redford, Michigan.
The 5700XE combines industry-leading
aerodynamics and efficiency with Western
Star’s legendary toughness into an ideal package
for owner-operators and small to medium
fleets in truckload/LTL, bulk, refrigerated,
long-haul and manufacturing applications. It
features a 126-inch BBC with a set-back front
axle and is available in a range of spacious
and lightweight sleeper configurations.
ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased
3.3% in October
American Trucking Associations’ advanced
seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage
Index rose 3.3% in October, following a
1.9% decline during September. In October,
the index equaled 147.6 (2000=100), up from
142.9 in September.
Compared with October 2016, the SA
index surged 9.9%, which was the largest
year-over-year increase since December 2013.
In September, the index increased 6.3% on a
year-over-year basis. Year-to-date, compared
with the same ten months in 2016, the index
is up 3.1%.
ATA also revised its September decline in
the index down to a 1.9% drop from the previously
reported 0.9% decrease.
The not seasonally adjusted index, which
represents the change in tonnage actually
hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment,
equaled 151 in October, which was
5.1% above the previous month (143.7).
“Continued improvement in truck tonnage
reflects a much stronger freight market,”
said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello.
“This strength is the result of several factors,
including consumption, factory output,
construction and improved inventory levels
throughout the supply chain. Additionally, the
6.7% rise in tonnage over the last four months
suggests to me that retailers are expecting a
good holiday spending season.”
Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S.
economy, representing 70.6% of tonnage
carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation,
including manufactured and retail
goods. Trucks hauled nearly 10.5 billion tons
of freight in 2016. Motor carriers collected
$676.2 billion, or 79.8% of total revenue
earned by all transport modes. ITJ
HUNTER’S
WORLD
Why Choose a Guided Hunt if You Are a New Hunter
By Jill Smith
If the thought of hunting game excites you,
book a guided hunt for the time of your life,
especially if you are new to hunting. Even
if you have hunted squirrel, deer, or some
other species, different challenges await with
each type of animal. What to hunt, when and
where to hunt, and what type of equipment
you need for each type of hunt are common
questions you might have if you are looking
for a new adventure. A guided hunt, a hunting
trip that takes you into a specific area to kill a
particular type of animal during the appropriate
hunting season, is an excellent way to learn
the ropes of your new sport.
WHAT DOES A GUIDED
HUNT OFFER YOU?
Comparable to a safari for hunting game in
Africa or other foreign lands, a guided hunt is
an organized trip that usually involves a group
of hunters who travel to a destination and bunk
or camp together. The actual hunting itself is
generally set at a ratio of 2 hunters to 1 guide
or 1:1. Working
with a guide
and a reputable
company helps
hunters learn
all they need
to know to get
started. With
modern technology,
you as
a new hunter
could conceivably
get up to
speed with everything you need to know about
planning a trip to hunt game through word-ofmouth,
YouTube videos, and the Internet, but
choosing an organized trip rather than a do-ityourself
adventure with a buddy can save you
time and even money.
While a guided hunt is considerably more
expensive than organizing the whole adventure
by yourself, you will benefit from the experience
of the company, who will suggest:
• Where to go to hunt specific types of ani-
ITJ 27
HUNTER’S
WORLD
mals. A company has a good understanding of
where certain game is prevalent and organizes
trips to these areas.
• When the hunting season is. The company
books trips based on when it is legal to
hunt animals in different areas.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM
A GUIDED HUNT
Having a guide or going on a guided hunt
does not ensure that you will come home with
game. Some new hunters of elk and moose, for
example, may not successfully kill their prey
for a couple of years, until they learn more
about the ways of species. You may decide to
change or upgrade the gun you bought as you
develop a preference for what you like. A guide
will offer good advice, help you plan a strategy,
point you to the right spots, and offer you tips
on things such as where to get your kill processed
if you are successful. Much of the fun
of hunting is in the process, which a guide will
help you learn.
IF THE THOUGHT OF HUNTING GAME EXCITES YOU, BOOK
A GUIDED HUNT FOR THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, ESPECIALLY IF
YOU ARE NEW TO HUNTING.
• What the procedure is. For big game, you
typically need to purchase a tag in addition to a
hunting license. The tags can be hard to get or
be limited to a specific area.
• What to take with you. The hunting company
can direct you toward the best weapon
and advise you what you will need to have with
you on the trip. Outfitting is expensive, but
working with a guiding company can help you
make good equipment choices.
• Where you’ll stay. Your trip package will
include food and lodging in a beautiful area.
The accommodations vary from rustic to luxurious.
When your hunting is done for the day,
you have a place to go and relax with people
that are likely to become lifelong friends.
WORLD
Who Needs a Gun Safe?
By Angela Brand
Gun safes provide a secure place to store
handguns out of reach of family member especially
children as well as burglars. Too many
accidents have occurred while children were
playing with real guns even though parents
thought they had the firearms hidden in the
closet or under the bed.
Gun safes also protect firearms from disasters
such as fires, floods, moisture which can
cause rust, etc. along with protecting them from
scratches, dust, and fading. Not to mention,
you can put other precious item in there such as
documents, jewelry, and extra cash.
One disadvantage to a gun safe is the time
that
it takes to actually
retrieve
your handgun
in the heat of the
moment. Remembering
a combination and
actually punching it in
under duress could be a daunting task
when every second counts. However, with
mapping out and practicing the most efficient
method of opening your safe and grabbing your
weapon, this disadvantage can be minimized
significantly.
There
is also
a new
trend of
gun safes
on the
market
that is
designed
to help
minimize
this
disadvantage
as well.
These are
the concealed
home/
gun safes otherwise known as diversion
safes. A diversion safe is a safe that is hidden
in the furniture, walls, stairs, ceiling, or
just flat-out in plain sight. With the location
being secret there is no need to use heavy metal
doors or complex locks giving a quick access
advantage. It is all about location and concealment
that gives the quickest access to the
firearm without creating a situation
where the wrong person will find
it. Many of these diversion
safes actually look like books,
furniture, and other household
items that blend right in with everything
else. A burglar would never know that it was
actually a safe nor would they take the time to
look because they are usually in a hurry.
There is also new technology introducing the
biometric gun safe doing away with the time-
30 ITJ hundreds of jobs at www.TruckJobSeekers.com
HUNTER’S
WORLD
consuming traditional gun safe. With this safe,
your fingerprint is the key, granting immediate
access to your handguns.
There is no remembering
the combination or
fumbling with keys. This
is the biometric gun safe’s
greatest advantage - speed.
The biometric safe can be
installed under a desk, beside
the bed, under a coffee table, in
your car, or a number of places for
concealed and quick access. Your gun must be
in your hands as soon as possible when dealing
with life-threatening situations.
Guns are intended to keep our families safe
and secure from all hurt, harm, and
danger but put in the wrong
hands that intention flies out
the window. We have a
responsibility as handgun
owners to properly
secure our firearms for
this reason. Be a responsible
handgun owner and secure your
firearms in a gun safe. You can find the gun
safe or diversion safe that fits your specific
needs at http://www.concealedbusiness.com.
You will not regret being a responsible handgun
owner. ITJ
