THE GUIDE COFFEE HOUSE CHARM ● Budapest has a tradition of grand old coffee houses (kávéház) dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. These were places where gentry and bourgeois rubbed shoulders with artists, writers and newspaper journalists (some of whom wrote their books and articles there). The communists came to see the places as dens of latent dissent, so most were closed. But luckily, today, there are hundreds again, from cozy neighborhood hang-outs and comfy modern chains to beautifully restored old-world grand cafés like August, the Bedő House (pictured), Centrál, Gerbeaud, New York, and the Opera Café. Hungarian Jazz A concert by the Dresch Quartet Saxophone player Mihály Dresch is “one of the most influential nurturers of a fertile fusion between Hungarian folk music and jazz,” according to music critic John Fordham from “The Guardian.” So it is no exaggeration to say that his “Dresch Quartet” is one of the most interesting music groups on the current Budapest scene and their performance is sure to come up with some inspired and unexpected pieces of modern music. If you book a table, you can have a dinner and a drink while listening to the concert in the Opus Jazz Club of the Budapest Music Center, which offers a diverse music program on other evenings, as well.
