SHARING YOUR CARE
When a Loved One Needs a Caregiver’s Support
One topic that comes up fairly often at
caregiver support meetings is: am I capable of
being a caregiver? The simple answer is yes,
we are all capable of being a caregiver in
some way or another. Being a caregiver
doesn’t necessarily mean you have to provide
all the care by yourself, 24/7. Here are a few
strategies to consider when deciding how to
provide the best care you can.
1. Consider your own needs, abilities and
limitations.
a. Do you work outside the home & need to
continue?
b. How much care does your loved one’s
health condition require (very little, some,
frequent, constant)?
c. Are you comfortable providing all of your
loved ones care needs or are you uncomfortable
with some aspects?
d. Can the needs be met at home by one or
two people, or a combo of in home & outside
the home care, or would a facility be able to
better provide the needed care?
e. Do you have other family members, friends
and community members who are willing to
share the care, in your home?
CDC National Diabetes Prevention
Program Offered at Gifford
Gifford Health Care’s Community Health
Team is partnering with Vermont Blueprint
for Health to offer the CDC-approved
PreventT2 diabetes prevention program,
which can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Prediabetes (when blood sugar levels are
higher than normal) puts people at risk for
developing serious health conditions, including
Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.
(To see if you are at risk take the test at
https://doihaveprediabetes.org/prediabetesrisk-test.html
.)
Trained PreventT2 facilitators can teach
you about small lifestyle changes—setting
• • •
• • •
2. Utilize resources that are available to help
with making these decisions.
a. Reach out to your doctor, clergy and other
family members.
b. Contact area agencies to see what assistance
is available (Central VT Council on
Aging and Central VT Home Health &
Hospice).
c. Disease specific associations (Alzheimer’s,
Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, etc.) can provide
information and support.
3. Remember, no decision has to be final and
forever. As time passes and things change,
you can and should re-evaluate the situation
and work with others to find new “best” solutions
for you and your loved one’s needs.
No two situations are alike, and no one
person was ever meant to meet all of another
person’s needs. There are resources in your
local community that are ready and willing to
share their expertise in a way that will help
you. If you have questions or need more
information, please email info@pibarre.giffordhealthcare.org
and our caregiver support
specialist will be in touch.
physical exercise goals, healthy eating, managing
stress, and behavior modification—that
can help reverse prediabetes. Participants in
this free year-long program meet weekly for
sixteen weeks followed by twice a month and
then once a month meetings for a total of 22
sessions.
