• For many Americans, Aug.<br />
21 was a once-in-a-lifetime<br />
opportunity to see one of the<br />
greatest displays in nature: a<br />
total solar eclipse. Partial solar<br />
eclipses — those in which the<br />
moon blocks a portion of the<br />
sun during the daytime hours<br />
— aren’t particularly uncommon.<br />
Total solar eclipses, in<br />
contrast, are far less common,<br />
especially for people who<br />
don’t have the means or interest to travel to obscure corners of the<br />
globe to witness them.<br />
SEPTEMBER<br />
• The Spaulding High School<br />
football field got a new flag.<br />
Mike Gilbert, a 1966 graduate<br />
of Spaulding High School and<br />
one who frequently walks the<br />
track at the school, noticed the<br />
flag and flagpole was looking<br />
a bit shabby. The class of 1966<br />
had a little money remaining in<br />
their treasury after their 50th<br />
reunion, and Mike thought it<br />
would be nice to give the pole<br />
a fresh coat of paint and a new<br />
flag.<br />
• The Cemetery Commission of Barre<br />
Town has recently gained custody of a<br />
gravestone belonging to Susanna Scott.<br />
The stone, which carries a death date of<br />
<strong>17</strong>93, is reputedly the oldest gravestone<br />
recovered in the town of Barre. A local<br />
Barre Town family found the stone on<br />
their property, but could not verify the<br />
location of the grave. They have been the<br />
custodians of the gravestone since then<br />
but have now turned it over to the Barre<br />
Town Cemetery Commission. The commission<br />
will be re – dedicating the stone<br />
in the family plot as a cenotaph.<br />
• Miss Vermont, Erin Connor,<br />
flew herself to Atlantic City,<br />
NJ to compete in the Miss<br />
America competition. Unique<br />
among this year’s contestants,<br />
Connor is a certified private<br />
pilot and piloted the plane that<br />
flew her from the Burlington<br />
International Airport to the<br />
Atlantic City airport. Erin is a<br />
2013 graduate of Vermont<br />
Flight Academy at Vermont<br />
Technical College. Doug White<br />
sponsored the flight and served as Connor’s co-pilot for the journey.<br />

• USCIS Welcomed 67 New Citizens at Vermont State House.<br />
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Northeast Regional<br />
Director Lori Pietropaoli presented 67 citizenship candidates to<br />
the Honorable William K. Sessions III, U.S. District Court Judge<br />
District of Vermont on Monday, September 11, at a Vermont State<br />
House. The Honorable Judge Sessions III presided over this special<br />
venue ceremony and delivered the Oath of Allegiance to<br />
America’s newest citizens. The 67 citizenship candidates, ranging<br />
in age 21 to 85, originate from the following 28 countries:<br />
Bhutan, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, People’s<br />
Repbulic of China, Colombia, Colombia, Congo, Costa Rica,<br />
Grance, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius,<br />
Mexico, Moldova, Morocoo, Nepal, Netherlands, Poland,<br />
Somalia, Spain, Sweden, and Vietnam.<br />
• Frank Hoare of Montpelier celebrated<br />
his 60th Birthday with cake, ice cream,<br />
and friends at Agway of Montpelier on<br />
September 18th. He was very popular<br />
with the staff and customers and retired<br />
last year from many years of stock work.<br />
Frank now enjoys winters in N. Carolina<br />
and being able to pursue his love of<br />
Harley Davidson motorcycles and watching the Andy Griffith<br />
shows on television.<br />
