The annual conference, a collaboration of University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association (VMSMA), will be held Jan. 20 at the School for International Training Graduate Institute in Brattleboro (1 Kipling Road) and Jan. 27 at Lamoille Union Middle School, Hyde Park (736 VT Rte. 15). Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. with the program getting underway promptly at 8:15 a.m. The event is open to producers with any size operation as well as those interested in becoming a sugarmaker. Registration is $10 for VMSMA members, $40 for non-members and $5 for students. Lunch costs an extra $15. To register go to www.vermontmaple.org/ maple-conferences. The opening session includes brief presentations on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program in Worcester, Massachusetts, and how the Food Safety Modernization Act will affect sugarmakers. David Hall, a director of the Federation of Quebec Maple Producers, will provide a brief market summary. All three speakers will present full workshop sessions on their topic later in the day. Producers may choose from 23 different concurrent workshops throughout the daylong conference. Several sessions will feature the UVM Proctor Maple Research Center’s research including reverse osmosis and syrup flavor and quality, sustainable tapping guidelines and biological and environmental control of sap flow and sugar. Panel discussions will explore the benefits and liabilities of opening sugarhouse to the public and the state of the maple market and the industry. A number of workshops will focus on the business side of maple from understanding the cost of production to digital marketing. Other topics include Vermont wetland rules and maple operations; sugarbush management; a forest tent caterpillar update; the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets’ best management practices for maple operations; and sugar maple risk mapping; among other topics. West Windsor Volunteer Fire Department “Sixty Years of Answering the Call” When they are not putting out fires and saving lives, the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Department is hanging lights on the town Christmas trees, delivering Santa in a fire engine to a town-wide carol sing or helping to keep safe the two-day Independence Day celebrations in town. Could we possibly ask more from this dedicated group? Yes! Gentlemen and ladies, start your engines! Shine up those fire engines and parade them proudly down Brownsville Hartland Road on the Fourth of July 2018 because we will be celebrating our Fire Department’s 60th year of answering the call! The Brownsville Independence Day Celebration Committee has evolved. It has grown and learned from past leaders with great appreciation. Representatives from many organizations and groups in town were invited to a feasibility meeting last August. The group of approximately 20 volunteers explored what they thought the town might hope for regarding the 2018 Independence Day activities and what the realistic volunteer community involvement might be. The end result is a group willing to recruit volunteers and lead. The committee is the Brownsville Independence Day Celebration Committee and consists of 4 main committees and multiple sub-committees. In all, this sizeable group has committed to create a memorable Independence Day Celebration in Brownsville for residents and visitors alike. However, they need your help. With his lifetime license, Pinney will be entitled to hunt and fish for free for life. He was drawn as the winner from among 10,650 lottery tickets purchased in 2017. “This was my second year of deer hunting,” said Pinney. “I love hunting in Vermont. I didn’t get a deer yet, but I had a great time.” The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department holds the drawing annually and presents a lifetime hunting and fishing license to the winner. “The Lifetime License Lottery gives anyone, resident or nonresident, an opportunity to win a Vermont hunting and fishing license that is valid for the recipient’s lifetime,” said Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Louis Porter. “Even if you don’t win the license, by applying, you know you have contributed to fish and wildlife conservation in Vermont.” • • • • • • This year’s sales of the $2.00 tickets brought $21,300 to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. These state dollars can be leveraged with federal funds to produce $85,300 to support the department’s mission to conserve fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the people of Vermont. “These funds help us to manage the state’s sportfish and game animals, protect threatened and endangered species, and conserve important habitat for wildlife,” said Porter. Hunters and anglers can enter Vermont’s License of a Lifetime Lottery by adding the $2.00 entry fee when they buy their license on the Fish & Wildlife Department website at vtfishandwildlife.com. They can also enter by applying at locations statewide wherever Vermont hunting and fishing licenses are sold, or with a printable application also available on the department website. There is no limit on the number of times someone may enter during the year.
