CHAPTER THREE -The Holding Pattern- What is a Holding Pattern? The term “holding pattern” is very common in Aviation circles. According to Instrument flight rules (IFR) a holding pattern is a precautionary, circular, flight maneuver pilots learn to absorb flight delays that may occur during a scheduled flight, arriving at a terminal, or a missed approach, or when an aircraft does not have the proper clearance to land. This precautionary measure is designed to ensure the safety of the pilots, crew, and passengers. A holding pattern does not have a time frame and if necessary the pilot will be instructed to continue flying in this precautionary pattern until the tower sees the conditions are clear for the aircraft to land. Examples of Holding Patterns Holding Patterns are a common part of the human experience and at some point in our lives we can find ourselves in the midst of a holding pattern usually as a result of an unexpected life event. Holding patterns can leave you feeling overwhelmed, lost without direction, defeated, and emotionally, financially, and mentally “stuck.” For example, in 2009, I unexpectedly found myself facing Divorce, Unemployment, Foreclosure, and Health Challenges-all at the same time. These unexpected life events left me feeling overwhelmed, full of questions, and yes, “stuck.” Time stood still for me and I had no idea what to do next. I mean, what do we do when we find ourselves in the midst of a holding pattern? Divorce Over 50% of marriages end in divorce in America and unfortunately mine did as well. I know firsthand the heartbreak of a divorce. I found myself devastated, emotionally drained, overwhelmed, and alone. My family would no longer look the same. Feeling like a failure, I found myself “stuck,” with no direction-in a holding pattern. My holding pattern consisted of not knowing what was next for me. I struggled with the unknown; would I recover from heartbreak? What would happen to my kids? Would I ever heal? Would I ever love again? I was numb, unmotivated, and emotionally devastated. Unemployment During my divorce I unexpectedly found myself unemployed. I lost the position I had held for over four years in a field I worked in for almost 10 years. I enjoyed what I was doing and I helped many people over the years. I like millions of Americans during one of the highest unemployment rates America had ever seen found myself in long unemployment lines, rewriting my resume, going to interviews, wondering what I was going to do next. I once again found myself in another holding pattern that consisted of “not knowing,” asking, when I was going to work again? Wondering how I was going to pay the bills? Wondering if all the time and money I had invested in educating myself was worth it?
