CHAPTER THREE
-The Holding Pattern-
What is a Holding Pattern?
The term “holding pattern” is very common in Aviation circles. According to Instrument
flight rules (IFR) a holding pattern is a precautionary, circular, flight maneuver pilots
learn to absorb flight delays that may occur during a scheduled flight, arriving at a
terminal, or a missed approach, or when an aircraft does not have the proper clearance
to land. This precautionary measure is designed to ensure the safety of the pilots, crew,
and passengers.
A holding pattern does not have a time frame and if necessary the pilot will be
instructed to continue flying in this precautionary pattern until the tower sees the
conditions are clear for the aircraft to land.
