Master Class in Buddhist Studies
Introduction to Buddhism
Instructor, Michael Mullooly
Buddhism is a major spiritual force in the
world today. From its roots in Asia twenty-five
centuries ago, Buddhism has become
one of the fastest growing religions
in Europe and North America. Its compelling
insights into human existence offer
an ancient yet very relevant alternative to
the materialism of the modern age. The
objective of this course is to investigate
the origins and historical development of
Buddhism, as well as its current trends. This
course will explore Buddhism’s central, unifying
principles as well as its diverse forms,
from the esoteric rituals of Tantric Buddhism
to the minimalist refinement of Zen.
This course will also delve into Buddhism’s
most important sacred writings as well as
the sacred art inspired by the
Buddha and his teachings.
World Religions as Personality Types
Instructor, Michael Mullooly
This course analyzes world religions according
to personality type. The template
for understanding is Carl Jung’s Psychological
Types (1921). Jung describes eight
types of human behavior. This course uses
his framework to show that world religions
behave in much the same way as people
do. Christianity and Islam are extraverted
in their behavior. Buddhism and Taoism
are introverted paths to the divine. Each
religion has a dominant personality trait as
well as a dark side. Integration of the shadow
brings balance to a religion. Repression
of the shadow causes warped behavior.
Dysfunctional religions do not contribute
to world peace.Only well-integrated
ones do. Roman Catholicism, for example,
exudes feelings of love and compassion,
especially to society’s least fortunate.
These extraverted feelings are balanced by
a strain of introverted thinking. Roman Catholicism’s
shadow shows up in its concern
for moral theology, especially hot-button
social issues like abortion, contraception
and homosexuality. When world religions
gain insight into their personality type
and integrate their shadows, they work
at optimal levels. This course explains the
whole process.
Buddhist Meditation:
Theory and Practice
Instructor, Michael Mullooly
Zen Buddhism teaches that the goal and
the means are one and the same: when
you meditate, you are the Buddha. Meditation
is an internal discipline that quiets the
mind. Practiced by Buddhists for over 2,500
years, meditation leads to enlightenment.
The objective of this course is to establish
and stabilize your own practice of zazen or
“sitting meditation.” Ideal for the beginner,
we will emphasize zazen in its most basic,
practical aspects: posture, breath, sitting
in comfort. You will walk away from this
course trained in an ancient and beautiful
practice which is the physical expression of
enlightened wisdom.
Class will meet every Tue, Feb 13-Mar 27
(no class 3/20), 6:30-8:30pm, $124
Is God Still Relevant in Modern
Society?
Instructor, Dennis Roscoe, PhD
Throughout the history of humanity, gods
have played a key role plugging in the
gaps in our understanding of nature and
our place in the universe. We have relied
on God for the basis of our morality. The
question addressed in this course is this: in
our modern society, is God still relevant or
is Atheism an alternate choice? Atheism is
one of the least understood life choices in
the United States. This course will dispel
the myths associated with Atheism and
dive into the roots of its philosophy and
psychology. Examine the evidence for
the existence of the Judeo-Christian God.
Examine the issue of whether or not there
is a conflict between believing in God and
science. All beliefs and philosophies are
welcome to join this open discussion.
Class will meet every Thu, Feb 8-Mar 8,
6:30-8:00pm, $55
