WHAT
MOVES US?
Turning theory into practice. Transforming
prototypes into patents. Translating research
into cures. Since 1925, American Friends of the
Hebrew University (AFHU) has connected the
passions of Americans with innovation at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU). From
medicine, to agriculture, to energy, to tech,
our support has yielded success—including
seven Nobel Prizes in one decade.
MOVES US
ABOUT THE
HEBREW
UNIVERSITY
OF JERUSALEM
E
instein. Buber. Freud. Bialik. Weizmann.
Some of the world’s most renowned
intellectuals and innovators set out to establish
a first-class university in Israel. They fulfilled
their aspirations when the Hebrew University
opened in 1925.
Einstein believed the success of Israel would depend
on its ability to produce influential intellectuals and experts.
Lawyers, doctors, philosophers, and scientists combined their
smarts and ideas to build the foundation for the university.
Ultimately, the work produced by these brilliant and ingenious
scholars created the blueprint for Israel.
Today, HU stands as one of the finest research institutions
in the world. It is home to inspirational educators
who provide knowledge and brilliant scientists who create
cutting-edge innovations that improve and save lives.
Join us in creating a smarter world.
Support the quest for knowledge by
giving to American Friends of the
Hebrew University.
At AFHU, we connect people’s passions
to the global impact of the Hebrew University.
Guided by the illumination of curious minds, we
support those seeking knowledge. In darkness,
we ignite brilliance; in the midst of strife, we
find solutions. And we will never stop.
Because Knowledge Moves Us.
FACULTY
MATTERS
Attracting Top Talent
Each year, the university loses about 50 senior faculty
members who reach mandatory retirement age. Prime
candidates to fill these positions include Israeli postdoctoral
researchers conducting cutting-edge work at leading
institutions in the U.S. and Europe. AFHU helps the university
by raising funds to compete for top international
candidates.
These outstanding new faculty members don’t just
enhance the university’s reputation through their research
and publications. They mentor students in classrooms and
laboratories and bring fresh perspectives to the academic
environment. AFHU’s goal is to provide resources for these
rising stars in basic and translational sciences, the social
sciences, and humanities.
Making an Impact:
Establishing Named Faculty Chairs
Establishing a named Faculty Chair supports
the highest level of scholarship, research, and
teaching by senior professors. Those selected
have extensive records of achievement and international
reputations for academic and research
excellence. By offering these Chairs, Hebrew
University attracts and retains distinguished
scholars—the kind whose work propels discovery
and progress.

SCHOLARSHIPS
S
cholarships help defray tuition
and living expenses and enable
qualified women and men from every
socioeconomic and cultural background
to pursue a degree in their field of
choice. Despite HU’s relatively low
tuition costs versus American universities,
more than two-thirds of students
request financial assistance during their
time at the university. AFHU raises
funds in support of all HU scholarships,
including:
Jerusalem Scholarships
A general scholarship pool from which the university
distributes partial and full scholarships to B.A. and M.A.
students based upon merit and need, according to
university criteria.
Scopus Scholarships
Need-based aid for B.A. and M.A. students facing
financial challenges.
Ph.D. Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships
For students pursuing advanced degrees.
in one of the Hebrew University’s acclaimed international
master’s degree programs.
he AFHU Alumni Relations Program reconnects HU
graduates in the U.S. and Rothberg International
School alumni, creating a robust national association of
accomplished HU alumni.
AFHU’s program is an alumni-driven initiative that
brings people together to share experiences and network
with HU friends, old and new. Through the efforts of our
alumni lay leaders, in tandem with AFHU development
professionals, the alumni program cultivates support for
the university’s advancement.

BREAKTHROUGH
RESEARCH
Supporting Research at Hebrew University
Initiating, developing, and commercializing research
are crucial goals for Hebrew University. The university
conducts close to 3,500 research projects a year and has
generated nearly 10,000 patents through Yissum, its technology
transfer company. With over 100 research centers
spread across six campuses, HU is a hub of innovation that
generates lifesaving products, therapies, and technologies
with global applications.
HU has always played a significant role in fields such
as biotechnology, medicine, and agriculture. This research
expands human knowledge, contributing to the greater
social welfare. The process itself also contributes to the education
and training of students, enabling them to become
highly qualified professionals with state-of-the-art skills.
They learn to think imaginatively and create solutions for
local, national, and international challenges.
PLANNED
GIVING
Research breakthroughs by university faculty have
been extraordinary and diverse. They range from:
• Effective new drugs and drug
delivery systems
• Eco-friendly agricultural technologies
• Devices for the visually impaired
• New ways of harnessing solar energy
• A deeper understanding of ancient
civilizations and human behavior
Philanthropic support for research at HU drives
discoveries that advance knowledge and contribute
to human health and well-being.
It Pays to Pay It Forward:
AFHU Planned Giving
When Albert Einstein joined colleagues in 1918 to
establish the Hebrew University, he envisioned a university
characterized by an unceasing quest for knowledge. Einstein
knew even in a world marred by conflict and injustice, inquisitive
minds would illuminate paths to human progress.
AFHU continues to expand upon Einstein’s dream in
many ways, especially through planned gifts. Each year, supporters
help to provide for the future of HU. They make a
bequest, create a charitable gift annuity, or designate AFHU
as a beneficiary on a qualified retirement plan or insurance
policy. Planned gifts have a long-term impact on students
striving for academic achievement and faculty whose transformative
research and ability to educate new generations
of future leaders is supported by these meaningful gifts.
Bequests, charitable gift annuities, and other forms
of planned giving provided through AFHU are honored
on HU’s Legacy Tree on the Mount Scopus campus, overlooking
Jerusalem.
