Local elections are well
underway. It’s no secret that
voter turnout at this level is
notoriously low. In 2013, only
43 per cent of eligible voters
voted in the city council elections.
Perhaps that figure
shouldn’t be surprising.
Footpaths, sewage and rubbish
don’t always make for the
most rousing election issues
no matter their importance.
However, local politics
matters. Councils across New
Zealand manage more than
$96 billion in fixed assets
and contribute more than
$8 billion to New Zealand’s
GDP each year. Good local
governance is at the heart of
the prosperity of our local
communities and growth at a
national level. Every day our
local representatives make
important decisions. These
decisions impact whether our
public transport and roads

allow us to easily get to work
on time, whether our children
have quality parks, pools and
libraries to enjoy, and whether
we have a vibrant culture and
community that attracts locals
and tourists alike.
The role of local governance
is particularly important in
Christchurch. With regeneration
underway, it is essential
we have local representatives
who will continue to work
constructively and enthusiastically
with central Government
to ensure Christchurch
is a thriving city in which to
work, live and play.
I appreciate we’re all rather
time-poor these days, but
please do take the time to read
about the candidates standing
for our councils and boards.
You might not think your vote
will make a difference to who
wins or loses but it can. When
I ran for the Banks Peninsula
Ward in 2013, I missed out by
five votes. Every vote really
can count, and it’s important
to have your say in who will
champion you and your community.
In just over a week your voting
papers will arrive in your
letter box. Who you vote for is
your choice, but please make
the choice to vote.

Healthy children rewarded

THIRTY BROMLEY School
children have discovered that a
healthy lifestyle can be fun and
satisfying.
The children, aged seven and
eight, can recite all the challenges
and activities they did to achieve
the rewards offered by the Rotary
healthy heroes programme.
Nineteen of them achieved all five
challenges each day for five days
a week, for nine weeks. Eleven
children partially completed all the
challenges.
However, the whole class has
learned from the experience and
enjoyed working towards the
achievements. This is the first year
that Ferrymead Rotary has sponsored
the programme at Bromley
School.
The children talk about how
they not only did their exercise at
school, but also managed all sorts
of exercise at home. Walking the
dog was a favourite, even walking
neighbours’ dogs. That activity
qualified both for the exercise
challenge as well as for doing
something for other people.
Helping other people also meant
helping wash the dishes, collecting
firewood and bringing it inside,
and looking after younger siblings.
The children spoke about how
they enjoyed playing checkers

they all had. They discovered that
expanding their minds and doing
things other than watching TV and
computer games can be fun as well.
Eating three vegetables and two
fruits each day was easily achieved
by most children and they didn’t
think it was difficult. Some children
tried new vegetables as part of
the programme.
Healthy heroes is a rotary programme
that has been running
in some Christchurch schools for
seven years. About 3000 students
have taken part during that time.

At the end of the nine week
programme, those who complete
all the tasks are presented with
a certificate, activity pack and a
T-shirt. The sponsoring rotary club
provides the rewards. Children
who participate, but don’t achieve
all the points, receive an
achievement certificate and activity
pack.
The programme aims to build
lasting habits to help prevent
obesity and type two diabetes.
The programme brings together
children, school, families and communities.
