Fashion
Cup week designer’s new collection
• By Annabelle Dick
ARA INSTITUTE of
Canterbury student Abby
Gottermeyer has already begun
a career in the fashion industry
before even graduating with her
design degree.
Miss Gottermeyer, 24, has
started her own business where
she makes and sells her creations
under the brand name Abby
Wynne – all while juggling fulltime
study.
“Business is going great, but
it’s stressful doing it while course
is on,” she said.
She started as an entrepreneur
when she put her collection up
for sale at the FORM exhibition
at Ara in July.
The fashion school’s third
year students’ collections were
designed to a brief from industry
partners and Miss Gottermeyer
worked with Lonely Hearts to
create her Cleopatra-themed
pieces.
A one-off sweatshirt with an
Egyptian-style hand-drawn
print was so well liked she had
to create more to keep up with
interest from keen buyers.
Miss Gottermeyer even quit
her part-time job so she could
dedicate more time to her business.
“I’m trying to juggle it all. I
quit my job at a cafe and this
has become my income and I’ve
made more money already doing
this than I would’ve if I stayed at
my job,” she said.
Miss Gottermeyer has had a
keen eye for the creative industry
her whole life as she grew up
with an artist as a mother.
Sandra Gottermeyer creates
encaustic paintings, which
involves using heated beeswax
with coloured pigments.
“She taught me a lot about
colour,” she said.
“She also taught me how to
draw. She was a sewer and she
had her own label for a while
and that’s how I initially became
interested in fashion.”
While the sweatshirts have
proved successful on the market,
she admits she’s more interested
in creating dress wear.
“I’m using this experience to
grow and learn who I am as a
designer – I usually make clothes
that I and my friends would
wear,” she said.
Miss Gottermeyer won the
Ballantynes Cup Week Fashion
Designer Award in 2015, the
New Zealand Cup and Show
Week Fashion in the Field Young
Designer Award in 2014 and the
Best Dressed Lady at Addington
AWARD WINNING: Abby
Gottermeyer has won numerous
fashion designer awards at New
Zealand Cup and Show Week.
Contemporary Award in 2011.
“I want my own label, end of,”
she said.
Miss Gottermeyer is working
towards her end of year,
Miami-based collection, which
will showcase at Ara’s PITCH
Fashion Show.
Miss Gottermeyer has established
her own Facebook page
‘Abby Wynne’ to sell her creations.
New dog rules start in spring
New rules around dogs, and what their owners
are required to do, are in effect from Thursday
1 September 2016.
Major changes to the general rules include:
• All dog owners must carry plastic bags to clean up dog
poo when in public places.
• When dog owners have their dog off-leash in a
public place, they must have it “under effective
control”, which means being aware of where their
dog is and what it is doing, and ensuring it is
responsive to commands and not creating a nuisance.
ALERT TO CHRISTCHURCH
HOMEOWNERS:
EQC is now asking homeowners
to assess own damage.
"Remedial works letters"
sent to those who've
complained about repair work
carried out by Fletchers EQR
Ask yourself: Why after 6 years
does EQC give you just 30 days to
assess your own damage? We say
it's to reduce EQC's liabilities through
homeowners not really knowing full
quake or repair damage.
• Do you know anything about
foundation damage to your home?
• Can you determine any damage to
your slab under carpets?
• Or if your piles need replacing?
Do you know if your ring foundation
is cracked on the inside?
DON’T SIGN
ANYTHING
UNTIL YOU
TALK TO US
To help you stand up to EQC we
are offering a fREE damage
assessment to all clients who sign
with us in the next 30 days.*
