It was a hard 21.1km for 

Sumner Running Club 

member Lisa Brignull, but 

that didn’t stop her from 

winning the female category 

of the Hanmer Four Square 

half marathon on Saturday. 

Brignull, who lives in Mt 

Pleasant, completed the race 

in 1hr 32min, taking home the 

winning title for the first time. 

It’s not the first time she has 

competed in the race, usually 

managing a second or third 

placing. However, Brignull put 

more into her training regime 

to get the win. She has now set 

her sights on the Christchurch 

Marathon next month.

A DISASTER response group is 

being set up in Redcliffs to offer 

help and support during natural 

disasters. 

The Redcliffs Residents’ Association 

is in the process of establishing 

the Redcliffs Response 

and Resilience Team to get the 

community involved in the local 

emergency planning and preparedness 

in the case of a natural 

disaster. 

The group has been established 

as a result of the poorly planned 

tsunami response following the 

November 14 Kaikoura earthquake. 

It is currently in the very 

early stages of planning. 

There was a lot of confusion 

following the November 14 

earthquake which struck just 

after midnight, and the Canterbury 

coast was put on a tsunami 

warning. Redcliffs residents were 

unsure if they needed to wait for 

the tsunami sirens, self-evacuate 

immediately or move to 

higher ground. 

The mixed messages from the 

city council and Civil Defence left 

residents confused and roads congested 

– with many not knowing 

where to go. 

Redcliffs Pharmacy owner 

Daryl Sayer, who is also the 

Sumner chief fire officer, said it 

was a “great idea” for the area 

– especially after the tsunami 

warning.

So it’s great to see the powers 

that be are planning ahead for the 

worst. And with large offshore 

fault lines in Pegasus Bay and 

further north that could generate 

a 7-plus magnitude quake, the 

chance of a tsunami striking our 

coastline is very real.

Development for Naval Point 

LESS THAN adequate facilities at 

Naval Point has spurred the city 

council into developing the area – 

and it’s looking for public input. 

The Naval Point Development 

Plan includes making improvements 

and upgrades at Magazine 

Bay, Lyttelton Recreation Reserve 

and the public boat ramp. 

The upgrades have been a long 

time coming, with increasing 

demand on the current facilities 

as the size of organisations using 

them continue to grow. 

Naval Point and Magazine 

Bay is home to Naval Point 

Club Lyttelton and Coastguard 

Canterbury. The city council is 

already working with these and 

other community groups and 

organisations in the development 

of the plan. 

The facilities are also used by 

many others for recreational 

water sports including power 

boats, trailer sailors, dinghies, 

windsurfers, wakas, stand-up 

paddle boarders and swimmers. 

As a result, the city council 

has opened up consultation so 

the public can have a say on the 

development plan for the area. 

The city council wants a better 

understanding of how the area 

is currently being used and what 

the public would like to see in

GRANT EXTENSION 

THe city council has approved 

the extension of a heritage 

grant for a year on the former 

Lyttelton Harbour Board 

building. The $333,548 grant 

was originally approved for 18 

months and should have been 

finished in April, however, 

the extent of the damage and 

design plan needed more 

work than originally planned 

and the build started to run 

behind schedule. The city 

council had to approve the 

extension or the grant would 

be taken away.

“There was very little in the way 

of planning and organisation, if it 

had been better planned we could 

have had more people in houses 

than halfway up hills in their 

cars,” Mr Sayer said. 

The group has identified an 

urgent need for tsunami evacuation 

planning with a focus on 

community education. 

Redcliffs Residents Association 

secretary Pat McIntosh said 

creating the group and a plan was 

important for the area. 

“Of course the recent tsunami 

and evacuation is fresh in everyone’s 

minds and this area is 

vulnerable so there is a pressing 

need to improve the plans for 

such an event and ensure that the 

whole community understands 

what to do in the event of another 

warning and need to evacuate the 

coastal area,” Dr McIntosh said. 

The group is working with Civil 

Defence and Emergency Management 

to work out evacuation routes 

for people in Redcliffs to use in the 

case of an emergency, whether it be 

a fire, flood, tsunami, earthquake 

or other disasters.

Ripapa Island building to be dismantled

RIPAPA ISLAND’S damaged 

Fort Jervois workshop building 

will be “sensitively” dismantled 

next week – but it is not known 

when the island will reopen to 

the public. 

The corrugated iron and 

timber building was deemed 

irreparable by engineers and historians. 

Its walls were blown out 

during a storm in 2014 following 

Cyclone Ita. 

Department of Conservation 

Christchurch operations 

manager Andy Thompson said 

eight people would go over late 

next week to do the work, which 

would take about two days. 

He said they would remove 

the cladding from the outside 

of the building and it would be 

winched over. 

The rotten timber will be burnt 

on the island, while recyclable 

material would be helicoptered 

away, he said. 

Ripapa Island is a former pa 

site and was later used as a quarantine 

station, prison and coastal 

defence centre. It has been closed 

to the public since the September 

2010 earthquake. 

Mr Thompson said originally 

it was hoped once the workshop 

was removed, the island could be 

reopened. 

But two months ago it was 

discovered the island’s wharf 

was badly earthquake-damaged, 

he said. 

It was not yet known whether 

it could be repaired, but Mr 

Thompson said it would be 

costly. 

He said the other buildings 

also needed restoration, but it 

was unknown when that could 

happen because DoC needed to 

fund it. 

“It’s not a $10,000 project, it’s 

closer to a $1 million project,” he 

said. 

“We’re always looking for 

opportunities and we’re open to 

ideas and suggestions and open 

to working with others.” 

PROGRESS: The workshop building on Ripapa Island will be 

dismantled next week after it was deemed irreparable.

Firefighters do odd jobs, 

climb Sky Tower for charity 

Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Jeremy Wheeler, 

Ian Rees, Andrew Legge, Candice Milner, Andrew 

Yaxley, Jack Montgomery and Kevin Hurl have been 

hiring themselves out to help around the place. From 

chopping wood to serving dinner, brigade members 

have been doing the dirty work for a good cause. 

They have been raising money for Leukaemia and 

Blood Cancer New Zealand as part of the Sky Tower 

Challenge. The team leaves for Auckland tomorrow to 

take part in the gruelling challenge, carrying 25kg of 

gear up 51 flights of stairs and 1103 individual steps at 

the Sky Tower on Saturday. The team aimed to raise 

$6000 for the cause, but have more than doubled their 

goal, with the total currently sitting at $13,871.97. 

Another community meeting with police unlikely 


IT’S UNLIKELY another 

meeting will be held between 

Lyttelton police and the 

community, in spite of what the 

community board say. 

After months of concerns from 

Lyttelton residents over the lack 

of policing in the community, 

a meeting was held in March to 

clarify the crime rate in the community 

and answer questions 

from residents. 

About 25 people attended, 

including members of the Banks 

Peninsula Community Board, 

community patrol team and local 

MPs. 

In the community board’s 

agenda, it was mentioned the 

“meeting was not well-attended” 

and questioned if another meeting 

could be held between police 

and the community. 

Community board chairwoman 

Christine Wilson said if there 

was a need for another meeting 

it would be considered. She was 

“disappointed” more people did 

not attend the first one. 

However, Sergeant Dave 

Knowles said he didn’t think the 

police would be interested in 

another meeting so soon. 

“I don’t see that police would 

be that interested in doing 

another meeting . . . it was up to 

them (the community) if they 

wanted to attend for whatever 

reason,” he said. 

Resident Paul Dietsche, who 

has been campaigning for more 

police coverage, said the turn out 

was low because it was “poorly 

advertised” and didn’t give people 

enough time in advance to 

diary it and arrange to attend. 

“If the community board step 

up and host it and plan it well 

in advance, I think more people 

would go. I hope more people 

would,” he said. 

Sergeant Knowles said while 

a meeting wasn’t on the cards, 

he couldn’t rule out the possibility 

several months “down the 

track.”

SPEED LIMIT DECISIONS 

THe speed limit changes planned 

for Little River will be decided at 

tomorrow’s city council meeting. 

The Banks Peninsula Community 

Board has recommended the city 

council approve the lowering of 

speed limits on various roads 

in Little River. Currently, it is 

planning to reduce speed from 

70km/h to 60km/h on Council 

Hill, Morrisons, Barclays and 

Wairewa Pa Rds, where they 

intersect with State Highway 75, 

as well as through the township. 

CONSULTATION TO CLOSE 

Consultation on improvement to 

pedestrian safety in Akaroa closes 

today. The document outlines 

seven intersections that don’t 

comply with the New Zealand 

Transport Agency’s guidelines. 

The majority of the safety issues 

relate to the lack of tactile 

paving, which are textured yellow 

surfaces that aid pedestrians 

who are visually-impaired. 

Some car parking will have to 

be removed and one intersection 

will be changed from a give way 

to a stop sign. After the feedback 

is reviewed, a decision would 

be made at a Banks Peninsula 

Community Board meeting. It 

is hoped work would begin in 

either June or July. To make a

Port Hills fire in print 


A GOVERNORS Bay volunteer 

firefighter and his partner have 

spent nearly three months 

documenting the Port Hills 

fire in a soon to be released 

book. 

Firefighter Rob Brown and 

his partner Kristie Fogarty have 

never written a book before 

but they thought sharing the 

photos and stories of local firefighters 

would be a good time 

to start. 

Mr Brown said he wanted the 

book to be a “great coffee table 

book” to show people what it 

was like during the fires in February 

– from the Governors Bay 

side of things. 

The couple has spent many 

late nights and weekends 

dedicated to putting the book 

together – with the finishing 

touches and last minute edits 

being completed at the 

moment. 

Ms Fogarty said the idea of 

the title, On the Burning Edge 

was decided early on. 

“The location of where the fire 

was, right on the edge of our 

community just seemed to fit so 

well,” Ms Fogarty said. 

It was also on the edge of their 

property, Ms Fogarty said they 

were evacuated as the threat 

of the fire crept closer to their 

own home – but they were lucky 

with no damage. 

She said putting the book 

together didn’t bring back a 

lot of bad memories, since the 

community were so supportive 

during that time. 

“I was still a bit new to the 

community at the time but 

everyone came together. The 

partners were keeping the fire 

station topped up and the community 

was offering so much 

help and support,” she said. 

The book consists largely of 

photos and the stories from 

the Governors Bay volunteer 

firefighters sharing their perspective.

146-page book will go towards a 

new shed being built at the Governors 

Bay fire station, which

Mr Brown said the selling 

1000 copies of the book is a 

dream, but he would be happy

plans to install a signalised 

crossing on Norwich Quay 

last year, to help make it 

easier for pedestrians crossing 

the busy road to get to 

the bus stop.

crossing will help make 

that easier. The finishing

to walk around their community.

children to walk to school, 

and older people will have 

the time they need to 

cross,” he says. 

The crossing is one of 

only a handful across the 

country designed to detect 

walking speed and traffic

one is using the crossing.

to be operational 

by the end of last month, 

but due to bad weather the 

completion date had to be

top problem solvers in US 

THREE GIRLS from Banks 

Peninsula are going to the 

United States to represent their 

schools in an international 

problem solving competition. 

Suzanna Davis, from Port 

Levy, and Ruby Blake-Manson, 

from Charteris Bay, both 16, are 

part of a team set to represent 

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School at 

the Future Problem Solving 

international finals in June. 

Hermione Murden, 12, also 

plans to attend the finals, 

representing Selwyn House. 

She will compete in the junior 

division of the competition. 

The competition will take 

place at Wisconsin University 

from June 3 to 14 and involves 

more than 2200 young people 

from around the world. 

The topic for this year’s 

competition is biosecurity. 

It involves the participants 

combining their knowledge in 

science, social and ethical issues. 

The girls have all been 

fundraising. Suzanna and Ruby 

both need to raise $3603 each to 

cover flights, competition costs, 

insurance and accommodation. 

Hermoine needs to raise 

$4700. She has hosted several 

fundraisers and applied 

for funding from other 

organisations to help cover the 

costs. 

The girls have all requested 

$300 from the Banks Peninsula 

Community Board to go 

towards the costs. 

A TREE hut, bike track and skate 

park could be key features in the 

redevelopment of a Governors 

Bay reserve. 

In November last year, the city 

council asked the community to 

provide ideas on three different 

sections of the Governors Bay 

Community Centre and Pool 

Reserve. 

It received feedback from 59 

people, including school children, 

residents and community groups. 

From the feedback, the city 

council has created a landscape 

plan to take to the community 

before it goes before the Banks 

Peninsula Community Board. 

It involves improving the current 

bike pump track, building a 

half pipe and a tree hut to create 

the feeling of being in the tree 

canopy. 

More play equipment, including 

swings and balancing logs, 

will be included, along with a 

picnic area near the half pipe. 

The plans propose removing 

seven trees in the reserve, five due 

to their declining health and two 

to make room for the bike track. 

The plans also include putting 

screens up near the existing 

swimming pool for better privacy, 

more planting will also be 

added to existing flower beds.

Lyttelton has been in the news 

lately – and mostly for very 

positive reasons. 

THe city council’s decision to 

fund the $56 million cruise ship 

berth is great news not just for 

Lyttelton but actually for the 

whole of the South Island. 

While some small cruise ships 

have been going to Akaroa in the 

last few years, actually both Lyttelton 

and Port Chalmers have 

been missing out on visits, with 

many cruise ships not heading to 

the South Island at all. 

The build challenge is huge and 

is expected to take two and a half 

years – which doesn’t seem long 

given the size of the job. 

In the same week, the work on 

the first of three stages to build 

the Te Ana Marina began. Over 

the next few weeks, the piles, 

which are being poured in Lyttelton, 

will be trucked through to 

the west to be installed. 

This part of the work is expected 

to be completed by November. 

It will be so good to see this inner 

harbour area developed and 

made attractive, including the 

upgrade of the Woolstore building 

and the provision of public 

amenities. 

But the bad news is that Community 

House, which provides 

amazing support for local people 

and includes the Youth Centre, 

has had its funding cut and, as a 

result, has had to reduce services, 

staff and hours. 

The new model that seems to 

be driving Government funding 

and also funding from organisations 

such as the Rata Foundation, 

is that the group getting 

the funding has to move to be 

“sustainable”. 

Might sound good in theory – 

a bit like “social investment” but 

what it doesn’t recognise is that 

some support services are provided 

for free to those who need 

them by volunteers who clearly 

don’t get paid! 

This is what a lot of our community 

and voluntary sector 

work is about and expecting 

them to become “sustainable” 

in terms of funding is an out of 

touch attitude.

closure of the tearooms in 

Orton Bradley Park 

I am disappointed to hear that 

a decision by the Orton Bradley 

Board will close the Victorianstyle 

cafe after such a short trial. 

I think the Victorian-style presented 

by Annie is a great idea, 

befitting the heritage nature of 

the park. 

A cafe in Orton Bradley/Charteris 

Bay should be a draw for 

people into the park, and a plus 

for camping users. My question 

would be, how limited was the 

marketing of the cafe and park, 

to provide a business starter 

booster. 

My guess would be that few 

members of the large Christchurch 

population on the doorstep 

probably had no knowledge of 

the cafe’s existence. I think if 

they did they would be delighted 

by what Annie has to offer. It’s a 

lovely building with individually-styled 

rooms, outside seating, 

and amazing cakes and deserts, 

to say the least. 

I guess the idea of a Victorian 

cafe may have less appeal to 

younger visitors, so perhaps 

it needs complementing with 

another attraction such as developing/extending 

the mountain 

bike trails.

Rotarians were enthralled by 

the traditional Maori welcome 

and entertainment they received 

at Woolston’s Te Waka Unua 

School. 

Visitors Chris and Joe Townley 

said the group was highly impressed 

by the enthusiasm, passion 

and repertoire of the young 

boys and girls from the school’s 

bilingual education unit. 

After a powhiri, and a hongi, 

the children performed a haka, 

songs and dances. Chris Townley 

says they were brilliantly 

entertained and the visitors 

were intrigued by the children’s 

ability to perform in front of an 

audience. 

The group, from Washington 

State, United States, and Vancouver 

Island, Canada, was part 

of Rotary’s International Friendship 

Exchange programme, 

which brings people together for 

social and cultural interaction. 

Groups of around 12 Rotarians 

exchange on a district-todistrict 

basis and are hosted 

by Rotarians. This group was 

hosted in Ashburton, Hokitika, 

Nelson, Blenheim and Christchurch. 

A programme was organised 

to show aspects of life in New 

Zealand – farming, tourism and 

wine-making.

Ferrymead liquor store now in 

New ownership and a move across the car park area 

to another building have seen Ferrymead Super Liquor 

undergo a complete transformation. 

After purchasing the business in 2016, Jeremy de Gouw 

decided to give it a new lease of life so it would be in keeping 

with the many other exciting developments happening in 

Ferrymead. 

“We needed to keep up with the neighbours, so I moved 

the business to the new premises, which are three times 

the size of the previous outlet, and designed the store to fit 

with the future of Ferrymead,” Jeremy says. 

The completely refurbished premises offer a bright, 

spacious and modern environment for customers, with 

a huge range of products on display. These include an 

extensive selection of wines from right across New 

Zealand, with a strong emphasis on boutique varieties 

rather than mainstream brands. Many of them are single 

estate wines, and labels include Gibston Valley and quality 

Penfolds wines. Sam Neill’s Two Paddocks wines have 

been introduced to the store, along with Graeme Norton’s 

Sauvignon Blanc, which is produced in Marlborough. 

Many international wines are also stocked. 

There is also an excellent range of Scotch whisky, which 

Jeremy describes as one of the best in the area, as well as 

brandy, Jack Daniels and other popular spirits. 

Ferrymead Super Liquor also offers an extensive range 

of beers to suit all tastes. These include craft beers, such 

as the local Monsoon brand, Epic, Pan Head, Shakespeare, 

Moa and Monteith’s. Many of them are available in single 

500ml bottles, not necessarily packs, giving customers the 

opportunity to give new ones a try. And customers are 

invited to chat to the staff about the products and get some 

advice. 

“Our friendly staff at Ferrymead Super Liquor don’t just 

sell liquor – they help customers make informed choices,” 

Jeremy says.

clean up riverbanks. 

This Saturday, hundreds 

of volunteers will don their 

gumboots to pick up rubbish littering 

Christchurch riverbanks 

for the annual Mother of All 

Clean Ups. 

Volunteers will line the Avon- 

Heathcote Estuary as well as the 

Heathcote and Avon rivers to 

try and clean out waste that is 

further polluting the rivers.

“We were thrilled to see such 

an enormous turnout of caring 

people last year. 

“Close to 1300 members of 

the public tidied 156km of river 

bank and estuary edge,” she said. 

More than 20 tonnes of 

rubbish was collected last year 

which ranged from plastic bags 

to computers and even a sheep 

carcass. 

RUBBISH: During last year’s Mother of All Clean Ups more 

than 1300 volunteers removed more than 20 tonnes of 

rubbish from the Opawaho/Heathcote River. 

“We are hoping that we collect 

less this year as the aim of the 

event is to raise awareness of the 

issue and for individuals to take 

responsibility for their careful 

disposal of rubbish,” Mrs Jenkins 

said.

would not need to get into the 

water, they would just be cleaning 

the banks. 

“We have a saying: If your feet 

get wet you’ve gone too far.” 

Dr Mautner said it was a great

The two-hour clean-up starts 

at 10am, with volunteers urged 

to register through ohr.co.nz. 

However, people are welcome to 

turn up on the day. 

Last year, more than 50 

community groups joined the 

clean-up.

A DISALLOWED try and a sinbinning 

in the final 15 minutes 

proved costly in Sumner’s 14-25 

loss to Burnside on Saturday. 

With the game in the balance, 

Sumner thought they had taken 

the lead late in the match at 

Burnside Park when winger 

Wesley Mauafu dived over in 

the corner. 

However, the tide turned on 

Martin Dodgson’s side. 

The try was disallowed after a 

touch judge spotted a punch at a 

scrum leading up to the try. 

“The confusing thing was that 

they sighted the punch but they 

couldn’t tell which player threw 

the punch. Ironically, the only 

thing we could see on video 

after the match was a Burnside 

player punching our guy,” said 

Dodgson. 

It only got worse for Sumner 

with first-five Nik Cumming 

sin-binned before full-time for a 

no-arm tackle. 

They didn’t have better luck 

before kick-off with captain Joel 

Rabbidge and Callum 

Wisbey both ruled out after 

pulling up lame in their warmups. 

The last minute injuries 

resulted in the club’s division 

two head coach Peri Marks 

receiving a last minute call up 

and rushing across town to

Dodgson is hopeful the two

while the mixed 18 team, 

comprising of Oliver Egan, 18, 

Sam Clark, 13, and Lili Ovendale, 

15, finished second overall.

Tuplet, for just six dancers, is the most intimate

Royal. 

“From the very first moment 

I started learning the Ekman 

repertoire, I fell in love with it! It’s like nothing I’ve ever danced 

before in my 15 year career. What I love most about the Ekman style 

is the rhythms we get to make, with both our bodies and our voices. 

All three works are to such ‘feel good’ music and have a quirky sense 

of humour, so you can’t help but enjoy yourself while you’re dancing.

The RNZB invites teachers and their students to observe their national 

ballet company taking class. These close-up encounters act as a 

fantastic refresher as well as a learning tool for teachers, and provide 

a source of inspiration and motivation for students. Don’t miss this

daily class, which will take place on stage in the stunning setting of the 

Isaac Theatre Royal.

Performing in my hometown always brings a bag of mixed emotions. 

On the one hand I get extremely excited to be performing in the 

stunningly beautiful Isaac Theatre Royal, which feels so normal, 

so right, and is almost comforting to me. But on the other hand I 

know the majority of the dance world in Christchurch, which makes 

me nervous, because I want to perform perfectly for them and 

make them proud. When you know that certain people are in the 

audience, it brings a nervous tension to your dancing – which can 

often make for a better show! 

I can’t wait to be back in Christchurch with the Royal New Zealand 

Ballet’s Three By Ekman. Make sure you book your tickets for a night 

of fist pumping, high energy fun!”
