Win puts <strong>Bay</strong>s another<br />
goal closer to MPL title<br />

FERRYMEAD BAYS have the<br />
Mainland Premier League title<br />
within their grasp after a dramatic<br />
3-2 win over Coastal Spirit at the<br />
weekend.<br />
<strong>Bay</strong>s trailed 1-2 with five minutes<br />
remaining, scoring two late goals in a<br />
remarkable comeback.<br />
Coastal took the lead when Guillermo<br />
Schuhmacher scored two goals<br />
in the first half. His second six minutes<br />
before the break was a contender<br />
for goal of the season.<br />
Trailing 0-2 at half-time, <strong>Bay</strong>s<br />
made two changes and pulled a<br />
goal back on the hour when Coastal<br />
scored an own goal.<br />
<strong>Bay</strong>s dominated the final period.<br />

Eddie Ashton to level the score with<br />
five to play. Ashton then brought<br />
down Mark Peers in the area, which<br />
earned him a second yellow card.<br />
Coastal striker Jordan Ball took<br />
over the gloves but could not prevent<br />
Andreas Wilson scoring from the<br />
resulting penalty, which sealed the<br />
win for <strong>Bay</strong>s.<br />
The win means that <strong>Bay</strong>s are two<br />
points behind Cashmere Technical<br />
with a game in hand. The two teams<br />
meet in the next round of the MPL<br />
on <strong>July</strong> 22.<br />
Both Cashmere and <strong>Bay</strong>s have won<br />
four MPL titles and are looking to<br />
become the first club to claim five.<br />

Nicholson makes<br />
NZ school team<br />
to tour Singapore<br />

Nicholson has been named in<br />
the New Zealand secondary<br />
school girls’ football team to<br />
travel to Singapore at the end of<br />
September.<br />
She will play two games<br />
against the Singapore women’s<br />
national A side and two games<br />
against its women’s club champions<br />
at Jalan Besar Stadium.<br />
“It’s a good opportunity to<br />
form a really good team and<br />
culture,” Nicholson, 17, said.<br />
“When I first got the email<br />
late at night, I went around<br />
the house yelling and waking<br />
everyone up, I was so excited. I<br />
just felt all the hard work I had<br />
put in had paid off.”<br />
Nicholson, who attends St<br />
Andrew’s College and plays<br />
club football for Coastal Spirit,<br />
is one of four Canterbury players<br />
in the squad, alongside Lily<br />
Bray, Emma Clarke and Tahlia<br />
