Specialist fire investigator Bruce
Irvine said the lack of early detection
systems has allowed the fire to get to
the point where it could do serious
damage.
“Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds,”
he said.
“Because of that there has been a
significant delay before crews could
attend the fire . . . it is highly unlikely
that the building can be saved and
will probably be pulled down.”
Minister Andrew Nicol said the
building completely complied with
the fire code.
“Everything complied with the
code. Now we have to maintain as
much normal activity as we can onsite,”
he said.
Mr Irvine said it was a common
afTeR
thing for churches and community
centres not to have fire alarms because
under the fire code they are
not required too.
“We have community facilities
that are susceptible because of the
code,” he said.
Police have arrested a man in his
30s in connection with the fire.
