With the October 8 deadline looming for the local body elections, the
Nor’West News asked candidates to send in why they should get your vote.
The area is covered by four wards - Innes, Papanui, Fendalton and Central.
A city councillor is elected from each, except from Fendalton where city
councillor Jamie Gough stands unopposed. Two are selected from each
ward to be on the community board, apart from Innes where Ali Jones and Jo
Byrne stood unopposed.
Pauline Cotter:

Our council succeeded
in restoring
relationships with the
Crown, Ngai Tahu, Environment
Canterbury ,Canterbury District
Health Board, and is working
collaboratively with our communities,
adopting an enabling
attitude. The long awaited decision
allowing the Edgeware Pool
Group to rebuild their community
pool is but one example. The
People’s Choice have successfully
retained our assets, while still
progressing the rebuild, keeping
rates increases low. I look
for opportunities to enhance our
water quality within our land
drainage recovery programme,
am passionate about safe guarding
of our pure water. Allocations
must be monitored, enforcements
applied, consents more
realistic. I offer representation
with compassion, logic, financial
prudence.
John Stringer:
Papanui Ward -
city councillor and
Papanui-Innes
Community Board
Christchurch City
Ambassador John Stringer is the
only candidate who lives in the
ward. He grew up (and raised
his family) in Papanui; is married
to Laurie; attends St Pauls
Anglican and Northcity churches;
attended Elmwood, Heaton and
Chch Boys High schools and sent
his kids to Paparoa St, Heaton,
St Bedes and Burnside High
schools. He has an MA from
Victoria University and worked
in Parliament for many years. He
operates a local security company
and a local food business;
is involved in the High Court;
has coached local Christchurch
kids’ rugby; and is active in the
Canterbury arts scene.
Mike Davidson:
Papanui Ward -
city councillor
As the current
Chairperson of the
Shirley/Papanui
Community Board I have worked
hard to advocate for local residents
and communities. Having
lived locally for over 20 years, I
know our ward. Recent boundaries
changes have pushed me just
outside of our ward, but my affiliation
is with this area and I want
to continue to represent you, our
many communities and our city.
I am an independent candidate. I
bring experience, local knowledge,
business acumen, leadership and
energy. Your support will ensure
that I can continue the work I
have already started and allow our
city to keep moving forward.

Raf Manji:
Waimairi Ward -
city councillor
As Chair of Strategy
and Finance, I have
helped guide the
council through a difficult time.
Our complex financial situation
has been clarified and stabilized.
There are still many challenges
ahead: trying to keep a lid on and
reduce rates increases, finishing
the repairs to our roads and footpaths,
restoring our community
infrastructure and facilities, and
devolving more decision making
to the local level. I will be supporting
more residential development
in the central city and that
the red zone must be restored in
an ecologically sustainable manner
in order to make it a longterm
asset for the city.”

I am passionate
about empowering
local communities to
make decisions for their future.
As a Baptist pastor, I want to see
our city council work together for
the interests of all the people of
Christchurch. I believe our city’s
future financial and social security
is best protected by keeping
our key income-generating assets
in council ownership, and by
ensuring quality, affordable housing
is available for all.
Together, we can protect and
enhance our waterways and
parks. If elected I’ll advocate
passionately for the needs of residents
in Waimairi.

I have lived in the Harewood area for 60 years, owning and operating a commercial property
growing tomatoes and raspberries. This operation employed up to 50 people of many different
ethnicities. I am currently a company director of produce companies in NZ and overseas.
