‘sentimental’ for Gough<br />

TEN YEARS ago Jamie Gough<br />

held his 21st celebrations at<br />

Mona Vale Homestead and his<br />

mother, Helen, donated a park<br />

bench in his name.<br />

Yesterday, the city councillor<br />

was back to cut the ribbon, for<br />

the opening of the historic building.<br />

Originally built in 1899, the<br />

homestead had to be restored<br />

after the September 4, 2010, and<br />

February 22, 2011, earthquakes,<br />

severely damaged it.<br />

The link to the homestead goes<br />

as far back as Cr Gough’s greatgrandfather.<br />

Tracy Thomas Gough, purchased<br />

the property in the 1930s<br />

and later sold it. He added the<br />

guest house at the west entrance<br />

and offered it free of charge to<br />

the city council as a place of residence<br />

for visiting dignitaries.<br />

Cr Gough’s parents got engaged<br />

and had their wedding<br />

reception at the homestead, while<br />

earlier this year Cr Gough had<br />

his wedding photos taken in the<br />

grounds.<br />

With a long-standing family<br />

connection to the property, Cr<br />

Gough said it was a “sentimental”<br />

day.<br />

“It was very special to open my<br />

great-grandfather’s home. I think<br />

if he had been here today he<br />

would have been pretty chuffed,’’<br />

he said.<br />

Restoration work was carried<br />

out on the fernery, bathhouse,<br />

and lodge as part of the $2.8<br />

million project.<br />

Different parts of the grounds<br />

and buildings have been completed<br />

at various times, with the<br />

homestead being the second<br />

to last part of the project to be<br />

completed. The gatehouse is still<br />

being restored.<br />

PRISTINE: Mona Vale Homestead was reopened yesterday after<br />

restoration at a cost of $2.8 million. It suffered extensive earthquake<br />

damage.<br />

IT WAS especially poignant for<br />

city councillor Jamie Gough<br />

when he, alongside Mayor<br />

Lianne Dalziel, opened the<br />

Mona Vale Homestead yesterday<br />

(front page).<br />

Not only did his family<br />

own the homestead up until<br />

the 1960s, but he held his 21st<br />

birthday there (his mother even<br />

bought him a park bench in<br />

the grounds as a present). And<br />

earlier this year, it also served<br />

as the backdrop for his wedding<br />

photos.<br />

The earthquakes have<br />

shattered so much of our<br />

heritage, so it is marvellous to<br />

see the restoration project of the<br />

Mona Vale Homestead finally<br />

completed.<br />

There are a few things at<br />

Mona Vale still to be completed,<br />

including the gatehouse, but,<br />

step-by-step, it is returning.<br />

Competition brings old boy home<br />

A LAST-MINUTE entry has<br />

meant one lucky old boy will be<br />

able to return home from across<br />

the world, thanks to his older<br />

brother.<br />

Thomas Moore will be able<br />

to join his brother Luke in the<br />

St Andrew’s College centenary<br />

gala weekend after his brother<br />

won him a free flight home<br />

from the United Kingdom.<br />

The brothers, who attended<br />

the school from years 1 to 13,<br />

will celebrate with hundreds of<br />

other former students to mark<br />

the school’s special birthday in<br />

March.<br />

To mark the occasion, St<br />

Andrew’s held the competition,<br />

Bring an Old Col Home, which<br />

encouraged former students<br />

to send in photos to win a free<br />

return trip from anywhere in<br />

the world.<br />

The school received 89 entries<br />

into the competition from<br />

alumni hoping to see their<br />

family and friends again.<br />

The competition was<br />

sponsored by Emirates and<br />

House of Travel Merivale. To<br />

win, Luke entered a photo of<br />

Thomas on his birthday.<br />

Thomas would ever match<br />

The brothers are ecstatic to<br />

Thomas, 25, moved to London<br />

in 2014 for a chance to see the<br />

world. He currently works there<br />

as a business consultant.<br />

The trip home means a lot to<br />

Thomas.<br />

“It is special as STAC was<br />

a huge part of my life for so<br />

long and I’m looking forward<br />

to sharing in the centenary<br />

celebrations,” he said.<br />

said: “This experience will<br />

give Thomas the opportunity<br />

to visit family, catch up with<br />

Old Cols and see the progress<br />

at St Andrew’s and here in<br />

Christchurch, which will be<br />

wonderful.”<br />

Most importantly, the trip<br />

will provide Thomas a chance to<br />

eat a few well-missed steak and<br />

cheese pies before returning to<br />

the UK.<br />

Christchurch City Mission.<br />

The team at the agency is seeking<br />

non-perishable food items,<br />

blankets and toiletries for the city<br />

mission’s food bank to be delivered<br />

in time for Christmas.<br />

executive Tony Jenkins said it is<br />

an unfortunate reality that the<br />

city mission experiences its own<br />

Christmas rush, as already struggling<br />

families are hit with additional<br />

financial and emotional<br />

stress.<br />

“Supporting the mission with<br />

(the) donation of food and other<br />

useful household items is one easy<br />

way everybody can give back to<br />

help out our community,” he said.<br />

In 2015, the city mission gave<br />

out 25,058 food parcels to 6849<br />

families; 21 per cent of those<br />

families had never presented to<br />

the mission before.<br />

This increase has become an<br />

annual trend since the 2011 earthquake.<br />

drop off non-perishable items to<br />

Builder’s award for<br />

FENDALTON: This Form Builders Ltd house won the New Home<br />

$650,000-$1 million category.<br />

A home in St Albans is something to “be proud of” according to judges at the Registered<br />

Master Builders Home of the Year awards evening. The home was one of three in the<br />

north-west of the city to win awards. The St Albans property was built by Casa Construction<br />

and won the Builder’s Own Home Award. Judges said while the home was built on a<br />

“constricted site,” it displays professionalism and design in the construction of the threebedroom,<br />

two-bathroom and two-living room home. A Redwood home, built by Milestone<br />

Homes Canterbury, won the PlaceMakers New Home $400,000-$500,000 category, which<br />

judges thought was a “well-planned” and designed three-bedroom, two-bathroom and<br />

two-living room home. A Fendalton home, built by Form Builders Ltd, won the Nulook New<br />

Home $650,000-$1 million. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-living room home was<br />

awarded for its varying height, texture, light and shade. Two homes in Clearwater, a home in<br />

Fendalton and one in Merivale were also finalists in several categories.<br />

Olympic gymnast beaming to<br />

Courtney McGregor, 18, caught the nation’s attention at the Rio<br />

Olympics. Fraser Walker-Pearce talked to the gymnast about<br />

how she found out she had been selected for Rio, the United<br />

States college system and what it’s like to be back home in<br />

Halswell again<br />

Hi Courtney, you’ve had an<br />

incredible year by any stretch<br />

of the imagination. What<br />

was it like competing at the<br />

Olympics?<br />

The Olympics was amazing.<br />

It was a lot of hard work to get<br />

there in the first place and I just<br />

hoped I’d be there, so to get on<br />

the team was amazing. We were<br />

aiming for top 16 and I managed<br />

13th and had no major mistakes<br />

so that was pretty awesome.<br />

How long has it been a dream<br />

of yours to compete at the<br />

Olympics?<br />

Oh wow, for a long time.<br />

Definitely from a really young<br />

age – from maybe six or seven.<br />

I always thought I’d go to the<br />

Olympics. I always just assumed<br />

I’d go as kids do. I figured out as<br />

time went on that it was a little<br />

harder than I initially thought it<br />

was.<br />

And when did you actually<br />

think it was possible to become<br />

an Olympic athlete?<br />

I think it was at the 2015<br />

worlds’ competition – I did better<br />

than anyone thought. I think<br />

probably after that test event, I<br />

had to get a certain all-round<br />

score and, when I got that, I<br />

thought that it could be a possibility,<br />

but I still had to get a lot<br />

checked off. I still remember the<br />

call we got from the GymSport<br />

New Zealand chief executive officer;<br />

he told us we weren’t allowed<br />

to tell anyone and we had to<br />

Facetime (video call) him to find<br />

out whether I was in or out. He<br />

called my mum and he told us<br />

I was going. I was only allowed<br />

to tell my immediate family<br />

and it was at least three or four<br />

days walking around telling my<br />

school mates that I didn’t know<br />

yet before I could tell people.<br />

That must have been hard!<br />

What happened after you were<br />

selected for the team?<br />

I got flown up to Auckland<br />

where they announced the<br />

gymnastics team, all of us were<br />

announced. There was a lot of<br />

media there that day and we<br />

must have each told our life story<br />

about 10 times.<br />

Talking to other Christchurch<br />

gymnasts, they were all excited<br />

to hear you were on your way<br />

back from college in the United<br />

States. How do you handle<br />

being a role model for younger<br />

gymnasts?<br />

It’s pretty cool I think and kind<br />

of surreal. I went into the Christchurch<br />

School of Gymnastics<br />

and all the wee kids were all excited<br />

and happy to see me, which<br />

was cool. Then I went over to<br />

Olympia (Gymnastic Sports) to<br />

see a friend who is a coach there<br />

and I saw her little girls and they<br />

were all excited as well.<br />

be back home in Christchurch<br />

You’re home at the moment,<br />

but when that’s finished will<br />

you head back to the United<br />

States?<br />

Yes. At the moment, I’m based<br />

over at Boise State University<br />

in the US on a gymnastics<br />

scholarship. So that starts back<br />

up in January, so I’ll be heading<br />

back over there soon. It’s all<br />

about working with their gym<br />

team and I’m definitely hoping<br />

to be representing New Zealand<br />

at some events in the next year<br />

or so.<br />

What big competitions are<br />

you looking forward to in both<br />

college and New Zealand next<br />

year?<br />

Next year there is the 2017<br />

worlds in Montreal, Canada,<br />

which is kind of close to<br />

where I am. And also the<br />

Commonwealth Games in<br />

2018. But I think that might<br />

interfere with some of the college<br />

events.<br />

So you might miss the<br />

Commonwealth Games? That’s<br />

a bit annoying?<br />

It’s just that it coincides with<br />

the college gymnastics season;<br />

they always have regionals and<br />

nationals and that kind of thing<br />

at the end of their season so it<br />

might clash.<br />

Zealand at the Rio Olympics. Her best result was 13th in the<br />

vault.<br />

What was seeing younger<br />

gymnasts at your old club like?<br />

It was pretty special. It’s kind<br />

of crazy that I now inspire the<br />

younger kids when I was in<br />

their shoes a few years ago.<br />

Some clubs haven’t had the most<br />

successful events recently, but<br />

they’ve got good programmes in<br />

place and I think they’ll be doing<br />

fine soon.<br />

Tell me a bit about the young<br />

kids’ reactions to seeing you?<br />

Some were really shy when<br />

they came up, but some were<br />

really confident. So it was quite<br />

funny seeing their reactions and<br />

quite cool that they look up to<br />

me.<br />

And are you studying a<br />

subject over at Boise State as<br />

well?<br />

Yes, I’m doing a lot of studying<br />

on general things, but I’m also<br />

doing health science. The set up<br />

is kind of different over there as<br />

compared to in New Zealand.<br />

So are you aiming to become<br />

a doctor or a surgeon or<br />

something like that?<br />

I’m not 100 per cent sure yet,<br />

but I might want to be a doctor.<br />

There’s so many schools over<br />

here, I really don’t know which<br />

ones are the best for studying to<br />

be a doctor.<br />

In terms of your scholarship,<br />

what does that cover for you?<br />

It’s a full scholarship for<br />

all schooling, housing and<br />

everything. It’s pretty good to be<br />

honest.<br />

What are the big differences<br />

between schools in Christchurch<br />

and in America?<br />

I think the main difference<br />

is the amount of sports and<br />

competitions there are over here.<br />

The NCAA (National Collegiate<br />

Athletic Association) system<br />

competitions are everywhere and<br />

a lot of people go to college for<br />

their sport rather than going to<br />

get an education because it’s so<br />

expensive. There’s also a lot of<br />

scholarships available.<br />

What school did you<br />

attend when you were in<br />

Christchurch?<br />

I was at Villa Maria College<br />

for most of it and I did<br />

correspondence for the last<br />

couple (of years). I think that<br />

school is more important than<br />

gymnastics, as it was my top<br />

priority and correspondence<br />

allowed me to get on with my<br />

work and then I had time to do<br />

gym after. It just cut out all of the<br />

assemblies and hour-long lunch<br />

times and that kind of thing – it<br />

really worked for me.<br />

So you’re back at home with<br />

your family now? Where are<br />

they based?<br />

Yes I am. I’m out in Halswell<br />

with all the family which is great.<br />

Did you get to meet quite<br />

a few famous people while<br />

you were over in Rio and at<br />

college?<br />

Yes definitely. Even in Rio<br />

I got to meet all the final five<br />

gymnasts and Simone Biles<br />

(all-round vault and floor gold<br />

medalist from the US) and<br />

everyone like that and I get to<br />

seem them sometimes because<br />

most of them are in college<br />

gymnastics now. When we were<br />

in Rio, we trained with them all;<br />

we were in the same part of the<br />

Olympic Village as the American<br />

team which was great.<br />

Do you keep in touch with a<br />

few of them?<br />

Yes, we talk over social media<br />

sometimes which is nice.<br />

Dads of Fendalton Open-air pupils took a day off work recently to spend a day at school<br />

with their children. Every year at Fendalton Open-air, the school opens its doors to its pupils’<br />

dads for a day they call read, feed and speed. Year three team leader Deborah Davids said<br />

hundreds of dads, granddads, uncles, big brothers and family friends attended on the day<br />

and were welcomed by the school’s kapa haka group. “Fathers spent time reading with and<br />

to their children, enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a fun, and at times very competitive, game<br />

of football,” she said. “The children love it and fathers take time off work for what is a great<br />

celebration of sharing learning and enjoying sportsmanship together.”<br />

LEARNING TO SAVE LIVES: After a Belfast pupil got medical<br />

assistance for his grandmother recently, St John went to his<br />

school to teach pupils CPR. Zack noticed something wasn’t<br />

right about his grandma after she had a fall and insisted his<br />

family call for medical assistance. His instinct was right, as<br />

ongoing care for his grandma was needed. Now other pupils<br />

at his school are learning from St John how to perform in a<br />

CPR flashmob.<br />

Heaton makes school cricket history<br />

Intermediate made cricket<br />

history last week becoming<br />

the first school to win both the<br />

National Primary School Cup<br />

and Shield in the same year.<br />

The school also had two<br />

players receive honours, with<br />

captain Harry Forrest named<br />

tournament MVP in the boys’<br />

cup competition and Georgia<br />

Edge named MVP in the girls’<br />

shield.<br />

The Heaton boys got the<br />

week off to the perfect start<br />

with a thrilling final day win<br />

in the cup competition last<br />

Wednesday.<br />

Taking on the top five<br />

other schools from around the<br />

country at Lincoln University<br />

over three days, Heaton boys<br />

emerged as the early favourites<br />

after day one. In their first<br />

game, Heaton accounted for<br />

Wellington’s Raroa Normal<br />

Intermediate by 36 runs. Forrest<br />

scored 94 to help Heaton<br />

through to 170 from 20 overs<br />

before dismissing Raroa for<br />

134.<br />

Heaton made easy work of<br />

their next two games against<br />

Cambridge’s St Peter’s School<br />

and Dunedin’s Tahuna Normal<br />

Intermediate before falling to<br />

a six-wicket loss to Auckland’s<br />

King’s School in the fourth<br />

round.<br />

Going into the final round<br />

of play, King’s only needed victory<br />

to be crowned champions.<br />

However, they were rolled for<br />

just 46 in a nine-wicket loss to<br />

Raroa. The door was left wide<br />

open for Heaton, which were<br />

more than happy to account for<br />

Huntly School, from Marton,<br />

by eight wickets and take the<br />

title.<br />

It was then the turn of the<br />

Heaton girls. They were looking<br />

to win back-to-back titles and a<br />

fourth crown in five years.<br />

They started the tournament<br />

with opening day wins against<br />

Havelock North Intermediate<br />

and Tauranga Normal Intermediate.<br />

Day two was crucial for Heaton<br />

girls, as they took on two<br />

previously undefeated sides.<br />

The morning started with a<br />

five-wicket win over Oamaru’s<br />

Weston Primary School before<br />

taking on Auckland’s Viscount<br />

School which also had three<br />

wins from three games.<br />

Batting first, Heaton scored<br />

152 from 20 overs. Lucy Murray<br />

top scored with 57, while<br />

Georgia Edge chipped in with a<br />

handy 40 not out from as many<br />

deliveries.<br />

Edge was then instrumental<br />

with the ball, taking a wicket<br />

and going for just seven runs<br />

from her four overs. Viscount<br />

were restricted to 118, handing<br />

Heaton a 34-run victory.<br />

title with a final-day victory<br />

over Raroa on Bert Sutcliffe<br />
