Village expansion opened<br />

RESIDENTS IN The Russley<br />

Village have a brand new $10<br />

million community centre<br />

which was opened by John Key<br />

on Friday.<br />

The ‘Homestead’ was opened<br />

on the site of the old Russley<br />

Hotel which first opened in<br />

1964.<br />

As well as Mr Key more than<br />

200 guests were in attendance,<br />

including local MP and Minister<br />

of Transport Gerry Brownlee<br />

– who once worked at the old<br />

hotel – master of ceremonies<br />

Peter Townsend, former hotel<br />

manager Peter Morrison and village<br />

ambassador Judy Bailey.<br />

Village director Graham<br />

Wilkinson said the brief for the<br />

build recognised the importance<br />

of the history of the site.<br />

“The Russley Hotel was of<br />

huge significance to Christchurch,”<br />

he said.<br />

“We wanted to preserve this<br />

by creating a sophisticated country<br />

club experience that captures<br />

some of the old hotel’s warmth<br />

and ambience.”<br />

Like the old hotel, the new<br />

Homestead has areas purposebuilt<br />

for entertainment and<br />

socialising including a boutique<br />

cinema with tiered seats and a<br />

café and brasserie.<br />

Upstairs, there is an intimate<br />

lounge. There is also a library,<br />

study and computer area, an arts<br />

and crafts space as well as a hair<br />

salon and wellness rooms for<br />

health professionals.<br />

There are a number of contemporary<br />

design features<br />

throughout, from the marble reception<br />

and weathered bronzed<br />

finishes to more traditional<br />

design elements such as exposed<br />

rafters and vaulted ceilings<br />

with skylights to diffuse light<br />

throughout.<br />

“The Russley Hotel was well<br />

known for its friendly fireplaces.<br />

We’ve emulated this and have<br />

installed within the Homestead<br />

three stunning fireplaces featuring<br />

herringbone brick liners and<br />

raked limestone hearths,” Mr<br />

Wilkinson said.<br />

“The Russley was also the<br />

first hotel in the south island<br />

to have a swimming pool and<br />

became quite famous for its<br />

parties. Again, in keeping with<br />

the history of the site, we have<br />

started the construction of an<br />

indoor heated pool and spa<br />

complex.”<br />

The new Homestead complex,<br />

was designed by Christchurchbased<br />

Dalman Architects and<br />

Auckland-based Lauren Hare<br />

Interiors.<br />

will be one-way heading west for<br />

the next four days while repairs<br />

Five students in north-west have<br />

applied for funding from the<br />

Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood<br />

Community Board’s youth<br />

development fund. Daniel<br />

Lance Chiplin has applied for<br />

$400 towards participating in<br />

the Peewee International Ice<br />

Hockey Friendship Tournament<br />

in Minnesota, in March. Amy<br />

Weaver, Grace Northern and<br />

Paige Bowman have applied for<br />

funding towards the cost of a<br />

gymnastics development tour to<br />

Texas, in February. Laura Jayne<br />

Marie Duncan has also applied<br />

for $500 towards a gymnastic<br />

training camp in South Essex,<br />

England, in April.<br />
