Email julia.evans@starmedia.kiwi Standing up for children Papanui-Innes Community Board member Jo Byrne talks about what’s going on in the north-west suburbs Our ward is full of families with children of all ages, many of whom attend schools locally. I believe a key role of the board is to advocate for children whose voices are so often not part of our local body government systems. The Papanui Innes Community Board invites the hard working principals of schools in our ward to meet with us once a term. Following our last meeting, there has been extensive media coverage of issues relating to children starting school with anxiety issues which appear to be earthquake-related. I believe there needs to be adequate funding from central Government to fund both research into this issue and enough funding to enable families to access the right support and intervention for their children. Research from Dr Kathleen Liberty at Canterbury University and the Brainwave Trust is currently under way, but the intervention needs to be timely. Waiting six to eight months for mental health support for our children is shameful. The community board is also advocating hard for more reduced speed zones around schools. Currently, nearly 29 schools across the city are waiting for installation or assessment. The current funding allows for three new school zones per year. We can’t wait 10 years for all of our children to be able to get to school safely. The community board has some funding to distribute each year within our community. Currently, both the Papanui Innes youth development fund and discretionary response fund are open for applications. More information and application forms can be accessed through the city council website. In the last financial year, we were proud to support many young people in our ward with their sporting, academic and leadership opportunities. Coming up in a few months is parenting week – from August 21 to 31. The neighbourhood trust is already hard at work organising speakers and venues. This is a wonderful opportunity to support the families among us and celebrate the great job they are doing raising the children of our city. Readers weigh in on the best option for upgrading the Gardiners, Breens and Harewood Rds intersection after Mayor Lianne Dalziel told the Fendalton-Waimairi- Harewood Community Board to consider alternatives Jacque Skinner – Traffic lights are the only safe and sensible option – especially with safe crossings for all the children in the area going to and from schools. Wal Thomas – All the council needs to do is slow the traffic down by installing splitter islands – including refugee areas for pedestrians and roundabouts like the one outside the service station – past the shopping centre. Emma Nixon – Traffic lights are the safest for pedestrians, as well as cyclists and people driving. A roundabout does not help pedestrians at all – and a large number of those pedestrians are young children, 10-12 years of age, having to cross at the intersection multiple times a day to attend Breens Intermediate. Tiffany Cavanaugh – A roundabout pedestrian crossing is just as safe as lights and would have less impact on the traffic. The traffic is only “dangerous” at school pick-up and drop-off times. I know because I use that intersection every single day. Kirsty Nixon ON THE WING Born in 1969, Kirsty lives in Auckland with her husband and two children. She has been a full-time artist since 1977. She says “Although it can be such a rewarding, frustrating, joyous, terrifying occupation I can’t imagine not having it in my life.” About her latest exhibition, “It was a natural step for me to introduce our striking native birds to my work. They quietly snuck in without me even thinking about it too much. We often hear the heavy swoop of wood pigeon as they move from branch to branch and I am woken to the melodic call of the Tui most mornings at home and often surprised by their lively dives through the garden. Fantails pick bugs from our path as we walk the dog through the bush near home. And yet we live in a city. We are fortunate to still have these creatures share our space and enhance our landscape. Up close, their feathers shine with a metallic luminous quality and when painting the whites of their eyes they each develop personalities. Interestingly the birds in this show have mainly been on the wing and it seems to reflect a current state of mind with a sense of escapism and freedom. Colour excites me and the time seemed right to challenge myself with a fresh exciting palette along with my new subject matter. Embracing colour in my new pieces has been a joy and wonderfully liberating.” Kirsty’s latest exhibition named ‘On The Wing’ takes place at Little River Gallery from April 8th until May 3rd. NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday April 4 2017 5 News Neighbourhood celebrates LAST WEEK the Mairehau community came together to celebrate their neighbourhood, even though the morning was drizzly and cold. There was home-baking, facepainting, information stalls and fair rides. Although it wasn’t long before rain set in and many stalls packed up early, the children were keen to stay as long as the fair rides were operating. Members of the Papanui-Innes FUN: Marley and Jesse Webb with their mother on one of the fair rides. Community Board were there (with many other community groups) to promote the city council’s draft Annual Plan, which is out for consultation now. Residents were especially concerned by the amount of roadworks and congestion in the area, and the mental health of children and families. Residents also said they were unsure about the priority given to particular buildings and projects when some people are still struggling. TIGER: Regan May went home with a painted face. PHOTO: ANDREW KING Club gets grant to replace equipment lost in fire • By Julia Evans THE BISHOPDALE Bridge Club can now replace the equipment it lost in a fire. The club was using the St Margaret’s Presbyterian Church to host its meetings after the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library closed following the February 22, 2011, earthquake. But the church suffered more than $2 million in damage in an arson attack by a neighbour in May last year. Cheyenne Reed was sentenced to six years in prison for arson. The bridge club was distraught to find out after the fire that it was not covered by the church’s contents insurance and had to fund its own equipment replacement. Last week, the Fendalton- Waimairi-Harewood Community Board approved $3000 for new tables, table cloths, bridge boards, cards and stationary. The bridge club has been temporarily using equipment and a facility provided by the Crockfords Bridge Club on Riccarton Rd since the fire. However, it will be relocating to the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library when it is opened later this year.
