St Bede’s opening match
saw them bowled out for
81 by Hamilton Boys’ High
which cruised to a ninewicket
victory in 17.5 overs.
The second match was
more of a contest with Auckland
Grammar giving the
mainlanders 167 to chase,
unfortunately St Bede’s fell
17 runs short.
The one victory St Bede’s
were able to celebrate was
a four-wicket win against
Wellington College as they
chased down 174. James
McSweeney chipped in with
a handy 54 off 84 deliveries.
The scheduled match with
Kings High was abandoned
due to poor weather.
The final game against
New Plymouth Boys’ High
saw St Bede’s bowled out
for 45, which New Plymouth
chased down in six overs.
Triathlon
The New Zealand schools
triathlon championships
were held on Thursday and
Friday in Wanganui with
a number of north-west

with first in the under-14 solo
triathlon and under-14 solo
aquathlon at the national
event. Taylor, 14, was third
overall at the Canterbury
event and first in his division.
Fellow school student
Logan Currie was third in the
under-16 solo triathlon with a
time of 43min 30sec.
Christchurch Girls’ High’s
Pixie Cockerill was third in
the under-14 solo aquathlon
with a time of 18min 51 sec.
She was only 11 seconds
behind the winner. She was
also fifth in the under-14 solo
triathlon.
St Margaret’s College
student Amelia Persson
came second in the under-19
solo triathlon with a time
of 1hr 2min 46sec and
second in the under-19 solo
aquathlon completing the
event in 28min 30sec.

Morgan, was fourth in the
under-19 solo aquathlon
with a time of 24min 3sec
and fifth in the under-19 solo
triathlon with a time of 54min
28sec.
Maadi Cup
The jewel in the crown of
secondary school rowing
competitions, the Maadi Cup
was won by the St Andrew’s
under-18 coxed eight for
the first time in a tightlycontested
final on Lake
Karapiro, near Cambridge.
They had to hold off a fast
finishing Christ’s College,
which were the defending
champions, pipping them
at the end by less than
a second. It topped off a
hugely successful regatta for
St Andrew’s, which also took
home the Springbok Shield
in the under-18 boys coxed
four race. It is the first time
since 1983 the school has
won the shield. The last time
was when current rower Ben
Taylor’s father, Andrew, was
in the boat.
So now two generations of
Taylors have held the shield
aloft.
Four silver medals were
won by St Andrew’s rowers
in the under-18 boys coxless
pairs, under-16 boys coxed
four, under-16 boys coxed
eight and over 15 boys
lightweight double sculls
and two bronze medals in
the under-18 boys pairs and
under-15 boys coxed four.
Students, teachers, parents
and supporters gathered on
Monday to welcome home
the triumphant rowers and to
celebrate winning the Maadi
Cup for the first time.
All up, schools in the northwest
brought home 15 gold,
nine silver and seven bronze
medals.
Christchurch Boys’ won
gold in the under-18 novice
coxed eight, under-17 boys
coxed four, under-15 boys
coxed eight B final, under-16
boys double sculls D final
and under-18 boys novice
coxed four and bronze in the
under-17 coxed eight.
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School
had a good haul with gold
in the under-17 coxed four,
under-18 novice coxed eight
and under-18 girls novice
coxed four, silver in the
under-17 girls coxed eight
and under-15 girls coxed
eight and a bronze medal in
the under-16 girls coxed four.
Christchurch Girls’ won
gold medals in the under-18
coxless pair oars and
under-18 girls novice double
sculls in the D final.
St Margaret’s also brought
home a few medals with
gold in the under-18 girls
coxed four B final, silver in
the under-18 girls coxed
eight and bronze in the
under-16 coxed eight.
