NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday June 20 2017 19 SPORTS CBHS beat St Andrew’s to retain top spot • By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High dug deep to stay top of the table with a two-point victory over close rival St Andrew’s on Saturday. A blazing run from replacement fullback Rico Syme drew the match 23-23 in the 68th minute. Alex Harford then kicked the conversion to snatch a 25-23 victory at the death helping CBHS retain their top spot on the UC Championship table. Syme said when he saw he only had one between him and the try line, he was confident he would go all the way. “I knew that if I got on the outside of him I was going to score. Since it was the winning try it felt pretty unreal,” he said. St Andrew’s were reduced to 14 players when fullback Tom Anderson was sent behind the sticks for a high tackle in the 66th minute. It was St Andrew’s second defeat in a week after losing 23-10 to second placed Timaru Boys’ High on Wednesday during their annual school DETERMINED: St Andrew’s Kini Veitata looks to brush off an incoming defender in the loss against Christchurch Boys’ High on Saturday. St Andrew’s coach Rod MacIntosh said it was a massive effort by his lads to get as close as they did after the bruising encounter with TBHS. “The weather conditions suited [TBHS’s] huge forward pack down there on Wednesday. On Saturday, we needed to close it out but couldn’t. That’s rugby,” he said. MacIntosh said the team can take a lot of good lessons from the two games. “It is a week by week thing for us. We just want to play with some consistency and enjoy our rugby,” he said. Today St Andrew’s play John McGlashan College in Dunedin before preparing for Mid- Canterbury Combined on Saturday. To bolster the team, young wingers Dom Clarke, 15, and Hugh Montgomery, 14, have been brought into the side. In other games, St Bede’s were thrashed by Nelson College 62-17, while Burnside had a tough day at the office against TBHS losing 66-5. NURSE MAUDE Loving home guaranteed for your hall table The Nurse Maude Hospice Shops are a well-known feature in Christchurch since the first hospice shop opened in Merivale nine years ago. Not quite so well-known, however, is Maudes on Trade Me. While the Hospice Shops sell clothing Maudes on Trade Me sells everything from antiques to sporting and household items. “If it’s still in good condition but you no longer want it, have room for it or will never use it again you can raise money for the Nurse Maude Hospice by donating it to us,” says Sue Bramwell, general manager marketing at Nurse Maude. While smaller pieces can be left for Maudes on Trade Me at any of the Nurse Maude Hospice Shops it is sometimes possible for larger or bulk items to be picked up. “Just give us a call on 375 4643 or email us at trademe.volunteers@nursemaude.org. nz first if you have large items and we can let you know where in Merivale to drop them off or whether we’re able to pick them up” says Bramwell. “Unfortunately we can’t take beds, mattresses or televisions, but we can take almost everything else in good condition.” “Maudes on Trade Me helps make it possible for patients and their families to receive care and support free of charge at the Nurse Maude Hospice so they can focus on what matters rather than having to worry about how they’re going to pay for that care.” CENTRE COURT: Mainland Tactix captain Anna Thompson, Isabella Cosgrove, 10, and Caitlynne Hill, 13, with Steel defender Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit. Netball fans get chance to high-five their heroes ST MARGARET’S College netballer Caitlynne Hill got to meet her favourite Mainland Tactix players on Wednesday night. Caitlynne, 13, along with Isabella Cosgrove, 10, of Hoon Hay, won the opportunity to meet the team captains and highfive each of the players when they were called onto centre court at the start of the Tactix match against the Southern Steel. They won the opportunity through the ANZ Future Captains competition. Caitlynne, who has been playing for five years, was excited before the game to meet her heroes and watch them play. “My favourite part was high-fiving the players,” she said.
