WHAT HAPPENS when Little<br />
Red Riding Hood, Cinderella,<br />
Jack (of the beanstalk fame) and<br />
Rapunzel meet?<br />
That’s the story Papanui High<br />
School is tackling for this year’s<br />
musical production. Into the<br />
Woods, a Stephen Sondheim and<br />
James Lapine classic, is an amalgamation<br />
of the Brothers Grimm<br />
fairy tales.<br />
Teacher and director Daniel<br />
Scowcroft called it a dark comedy.<br />
“It looks at growing up and<br />
some of the challenges we face<br />
on the road to adulthood,” he<br />
said.<br />
“There are some hilarious<br />
moments that I have seen a<br />
hundred times and still laugh at.<br />
While you let your guard down<br />
laughing, reality quickly sets in<br />
and you will see the characters<br />
struggle with some majorly difficult<br />
events.”<br />
The central characters, the<br />
Baker and his Wife, are desperate<br />
for a child and on instruction<br />
from a witch, they go into the<br />
woods in the hope of fulfilling<br />
their wish for a family.<br />
The subsequent adventures<br />
twist and turn on a journey of<br />
joy, love, loss and adventure.<br />
Students look forward to this<br />
biennial opportunity to experience<br />
creating a full scale musical<br />
production.<br />
