6 Tuesday October 24 2017 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Your Local Views Funding gives confidence to plan ahead Manager of the Neighbourhood Trust Ginny Larsen writes about how three years of funding has secured the trust’s future to the benefit of the community Funding – the very word is enough to send chills up the spine of most not-for-profit organisations. As the manager of Neighbourhood Trust, (the community arm of St Albans Baptist Church), a local not-for-profit working mainly in the Mairehau, Shirley and St Albans part of town, I feel like half my life is taken up with funding applications and accountabilities. So it is a nice surprise to have some funders making the process a bit easier by putting three-year funding as an option. This year both NZ Lotteries and the city council, through its community boards offered this alternative. And we are exceptionally grateful to the Papanui-Innes Community Board for its grant. It must be hugely difficult making decisions, especially as the funds available to them have been cut by $85,000. So what does this mean for an organisation to have funds guaranteed for three years? It gives us confidence to plan and look ahead, to know we can retain our wonderfully effective staff and provide appropriate training to keep them up-to-date. It means we can continue to offer our community consistent, community-led work at a high level to a variety of sectors – the Golden Connections programme for over-60s; from exercise classes to community days; from free English as a second language classes to OSCAR programmes to the Pay It Forward collective of over 50 local designers, selling their products through the store at 49 Nancy Ave. It also means we can dream a little about working with our community in different ways, supporting and mentoring, listening to their aspirations for their whanau. Through the Mairehau Neighbourhood Project, a three-year COMMUNITY: The Neighbourhood Trust can focus on supporting the community now that it has secured three years of funding. project supported by The Tindall Foundation, we have seen transformational, long-term change; some remarkable stories. Working alongside partners Te Ora Hou and Kingdom Resources, with Mairehau Primary School as a base has brought a depth to our work with families. We have seen the value of longer-term thinking and are delighted that this work can now continue to develop. It’s energising and empowering for our organisation and for our community. On one hand, we are humbled by the trust funders have put in us; on the other hand, we’d love to see the process made easier for all those organisations who have a proven track record and give great value for money. Let’s release them from the application grind and free them for more time making things happen. Glenda McMillan – Maybe the people who decide these designs should take a look at some Australian malls. All their busses detour into the malls so all other traffic doesn’t have to deal with a shambles like Papanui Rd has become. It’s a real shame as there is a big impact on the local community with increased traffic that doesn’t flow. Conrad Fitz-Gerald – Pretty convenient really. I mean, you don’t even have to find a park anymore. Just jump out at the start of the lights and you’ll be back before you need to go anywhere. Great way to keep customers happy. Can’t they just stick to ruining the CBD and leave the suburbs alone? Jill Lang – In my opinion the money would be better spent putting in much needed right turning lights. Since the turning rule was changed some places are hideous such as Cranford St onto Innes Rd. Mike Allfrey – Chuck in a couple of roundabouts and a railway crossing while you’re at it. Way to go council, lets stuff up the whole traffic flow. And they wonder why people don’t go to the CBD. It’s the same but worse there. Andrew Miller – The Papanui High School students that walk straight out onto the road will keep doing it. Aaron Campbell – Don’t forget the useless traffic islands with trees and a cycle path that takes up most of the road and you are on to a winner. Vanessa MacKenzie – Where? There are lights at the corner by Westpac, there are lights at the closest entrance to Countdown and lights by Couplands. They’ve also put completely unnecessary crossing lights in on Sawyers Arms Rd at the Papanui Club. There are lights down just a bit at the Gardiners Rd intersection so this is going to cause even more congestion especially after school. There was already a crossing bay there that cars would often stop for so lights are a waste of money which could have been used to put lights where really need such as the hideous Breens/Harewood/Gardiners Rds intersection. Rachel Powell – It’s already so slow going that way it’s quicker to go around back streets to avoid Papanui Rd do they really need more lights in that area. Dr Edwards said the section of the cycle lane would be remarked by November. But Mr Wilding said the city council has only acknowledged one section of the cycle lane does not comply, when there are more than 10. The memo will be discussed by the community board at its meeting tonight.
