Construction of the 5km, four-lane stretch of road which will aim to cut down traffic from Main North Rd to the airport is 95 per cent complete. Work is to set to ramp up over the next few weeks as the project draws to a close. Traffic will be switched onto the new bypass in stages from early November after an open day on October 29 for people to walk or cycle along the new road. A north-bound lane will open to traffic first, followed by a south-bound lane about a week later. The stagnated opening will allow the project team to complete the final parts of the project, such as connecting the bypass to the existing road network and carrying out surfacing work on the ramps.
