Bypass almost finished
Open Day
planned for
October 29
THE WESTERN Belfast Bypass
project is almost finished.
Construction of the 5km,
four-lane stretch of road which
will aim to cut down traffic from
Main North Rd to the airport is
95 per cent complete.
Work is to set to ramp up over
the next few weeks as the project
draws to a close.
Traffic will be switched onto
the new bypass in stages from
early November after an open
day on October 29 for people to
walk or cycle along the new road.
A north-bound lane will open
to traffic first, followed by a
south-bound lane about a week
later.
The stagnated opening will
allow the project team to
complete the final parts of the
project, such as connecting
the bypass to the existing road
network and carrying out
surfacing work on the ramps.

weather, all lanes of the bypass
should be open to traffic in
December.
The construction team will
return to lay the final low noise
asphalt surfacing in spring 2018.
About 118,000 plants, shrubs
and trees have been planted
along the bypass.
Most have been grown from
seeds and cuttings sourced from
native plants in the area.
During the project, more than
3500 native fish, including long
fin and short fin eels, giant bully
and inanga, have been rescued
and relocated to other parts of
the waterway.
Where the bypass travels over
waterways, culverts have been
designed to allow fish passages
and riparian planting has been
restored with native species.

kept as the centre started
operating out of the Belfast
Community Network building
last week.
The former playcentre on
Main North Rd was devastated
by a fire that started when a pot
was left on the stove during a
fifth birthday party.

Ms O’Rourke said there would
be a shortfall in terms of the insurance
payout due to the high
demolition costs.
“We’ve had huge support from
the community and playcentres
around the country,” she said.
Belfast Primary School will
run a mufti-day on Friday to
raise money and support the
integral part of the Belfast community.
