Tuesday November 28 2017 5
We asked readers if they
though fireworks should
be banned after a serious
house fire in Harewood
almost ended in deaths
after a firework was
thrown onto the roof. You
responded
Debbie Pascoe – Good
on you Bruce it is high time
for a ban on the public sale of
fireworks. Can we not involve
multi-agencies across medicine,
veterinary, firefighters as well as
the public. The professionals at
the ‘picking up the pieces’ end
must hate it and sadly it isn’t
confined to November 5, many
people hoard them and let them
off randomly. Pet owners cannot
predict when they need to protect
their animals, horses go through
fences and have to be destroyed,
the list goes on. The idiots may
not be the majority of users but
the carnage outweighs the benefits
of the display. When lives are
threatened a line has to be drawn.
Public displays generally are far
safer and that offers the public
the chance to enjoy fireworks of
a much better quality and at least
we know it is only one weekend
that has to be endured.
Cherry Cornelius – Ban
from public sale, I’m fed up
with it every night, the animals
that are terrified and injured.
Public displays only would be
great.
Chris Matthews – They do
need to be banned from public
sale, we have them going off
every night as people stockpile
them. Public displays are fine.
Elaine Beavington – Fireworks
need to be banned. November
5 is long past its use by
date. People abuse what it stands
for. Some fireworks are like a
loaded gun. Anyway, it
has nothing to do with New
Zealand.
Penelope Bell – They
become a public nuisance in the
hands of irresponsible people.
Ban them and save distress,
injury and money.
Michaela Suttie – I am
all for banning them, have had
distressed dogs since they went
on sale and one night had a very
stressed baby due to someone
letting one off right outside his
window. I wouldn’t mind if
people were sensible but each
year it seems to be getting worse
and the stockpiles people are
saving and letting off months
later gets quite tiresome. I use to
love them but now can’t stand
them.
Lexine Harpur – Ban public
sales, stick to controlled events
only. Too many irresponsible
people letting off fireworks after
public events amongst crowds
of people. Almost struck twice
after this year’s public event in
Christchurch. Too late once the
damage is done.
Jenny Jarvis – Ban sales
to the public, I hate how our
younger dog gets so stressed
night after night, we have had
them going off in our area for the
last two months.
Una Atkins – About
time fireworks were given the
boot.
Kim Brown – Prosecute
people using them after November
5.
Lisa-Marie Hallam – Ban
public sales, only have displays.
Too many problems each year
with the public.
Abbie Grammer – Every
year the same thing. It seems the
Local
News
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
majority wants them banned and
used only for controlled public
displays. What do we need to do
to change this? How do we get
the ball rolling?
Tania Sisson – Stupid people
doing stupid acts.
Krysie Harding-Browne
– A friend of mine has had fireworks
shot at her house purposefully
(angry neighbour), stick to
public events.
Diane Rangi – I agree with
everyone. Ban them. Organised
displays only.
Mike Adamson – Tougher
punishment for firework crimes
committed. No point ruining it
for everyone.
Bev Dobson – Ban the
things.
Wal Thomas – Could have
been my house. Time to ban
public fireworks sales.
Tony Waterman – And yet
they’re still legal to buy.
Niki Harper – Organised
events only.
Joy Averis – How could anyone
be so stupid.
Nichola Tyson – Ban public
sales.
