The identity of Coral Luscombe and her dog Poppi’s anonymous benefactor is a still a
mystery. The kind stranger paid a $1000 vet bill for Poppi, who was hurt badly after being
hit by a car, but is now on the mend. Now Mrs Luscombe and Poppi just want to give the
woman a hug and to say thanks.
POLICE ARE urging people not
to think there is an explosion
of burglaries in South New
Brighton because of posts on
Facebook.
Senior Sergeant Dave
Robertson (right) said
many of the posts about
burglaries were from
people who are “alarmists.”
They were “rumour
The area where Facebook posts
said there had been an explosion
of break-ins was within a 1km
radius of Bridge St.
It was giving a misleading impression
of the real situation, said
Senior Sergeant Robertson.
Overall there had not been an
increase in burglaries in the area
concerned, apart from a small
spike about six weeks ago, he
said.
“[On Facebook, people] like to
rant and rave about burglaries.
Community board’s low attendance
leads to lack of decision-making
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A LACK of attendance
from Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board members
meant a decision on a major
road upgrade – which could
take away 70 per cent of car
parks – has been delayed.
A joint community board
meeting was called to discuss
whether the North Avon Rd
renewal project, which is likely
to take away 40 to 70 of the 100
car parks available along the
road, should go ahead.
The meeting between
Hagley-Ferrymead, Shirley-
Papanui, and Burwood-
Pegasus community boards
was held last Thursday at the
city council building.
But a decision on the
repairs, worth about $2.9
million, could not be made
because only city councillor
Yani Johanson, chairwoman
Sara Templeton and member
Alexandra Davids were present
for Hagley-Ferrymead.
City councillor for the
Hagley-Ferrymead Ward Paul
Lonsdale couldn’t attend the
meeting and community board
member Brenda Lowe-Johnson
joined the meeting too late.
ROAD RENEWAL: North Avon Rd could receive a multi-million dollar upgrade.
To be able to discuss a
decision, all community
boards had to have at least four
members present.
Cr Lonsdale said he wanted
to be at the combined meeting,
but could not make it.
“I would’ve (attended), but
I had issues with pre-booked
meetings and development
issues in the city centre,” he
said.
Do you own a property
with unrepaired
earthquake damage?
City councillor David East
said it was disappointing to
be unable to make a decision,
but the low attendance was
understandable.
“It’s a shame we’ll have to
reconvene, but (the Hagley-
Ferrymead Community
Board is) only five-strong
anyway. They used to have
seven, but one went overseas
and one lives way out of town,”
he said.
Community consultation
showed the highest priority for
concerned residents was the
loss of parking spaces.
With only one meeting
left before the October
elections, it means the new
city council will make the
final decision based on
the community boards
recommendations.
Mitochondrial disease. The car wash
will be held at the New Brighton Fire
Station, 80 Hawke St between 10am
and 2pm. The cost is a donation of
Swimmer ready for transplant games
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
BEN STANBURY, 11, was
once told he had a one-in-three
chance of dying.
Now, after receiving a liver
transplant last year, the young
swimmer will be the only child
organ recipient from New
Zealand to be compete at the
Australian Transplant Games
held in Sydney.
Ben, of St Albans, will travel
to Sydney this week to compete
in swimming, shot-put, a 50m
sprint and 10-pin bowling.
At four months old, Ben
was diagnosed with polycystic
kidney disease after he was
rushed to hospital with heart
failure.
The disease is a genetic disorder
where abnormal cysts grow
in the kidneys. He also
had severe problems with his
liver.
The night of his diagnosis was
a moment his mother Traci Stanbury
would never forget after she
was told he had a one-in-three
chance in dying.
“In the end they paralysed
him, put him on an ambulance
and he spent the next month
living up in Starship Hospital,”
she said.
Mrs Stanbury said since the
“traumatic” night, Ben’s heart
Over the next few years Ben
will be looking to have a kidney
currently at 40 per cent.
Mrs Stanbury said he will be
put on a waiting list of about
But for now, Ben is looking
forward to going over to competing
in the games as well as visiting
Featherdale Wildlife Park.
“For him to be the exact same
as everyone else in the room and
to be completely normal, that is
quite a cool thing for him to do,”
Inspired by paralympian Sophie
Pascoe, who won five medals
at the Rio Paralympics, Ben
will be competing in numerous
events including his favourite
sport of swimming.
Ben first became interested
in swimming at age four and
leading up to the games he has
been practising once a week in
preparation.
“Never give up because it can
always be done,” he said.
A pair of boxing gloves signed
items up for auction on the night.
Event organiser Melissa
nine parents pitched the idea of
a King of the Ring event to the
EAST
Re-Elect
board in dark
over projects
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
ALMOST THREE weeks after
a behind-closed-doors meeting
with city councillors, a feasibility
report on the New Brighton
hot salt water pools and North
Beach promenade is yet to be
seen by the Burwood-Pegasus
Community Board.
Reports on the North Beach
promenade and hot salt water
pools project were presented to
the city council at a staff briefing
on August 29.
Previously, Pegasus Post
reported that doubts had been
cast over whether the $2.4
million North Beach promenade
project will go ahead in its
current form.
The behind-closed-door
meetings revealed problems with
financing the project, which has
potentially jeopardised it.
The community board asked
city council staff to keep them
I have represented the Coastal Ward for 12
years on the Community Board and three
years as City Councillor for the area.
It is with immense pride that I am a fourth
generation member of our community and
follow my Great Grandfather and Grandfather
in council matters, both being elected
members of the New Brighton Borough
Council
My significant involvement in this term has
been with the QEII Pool rebuild (about to
start), new High Schools on QEII Park and
advocating for the retention of Gravity Sewerage
in Parklands. I have also been significantly
involved in Coastal Hazard management in
the Eastern Suburbs, successfully challenging
reports commissioned and advocating for a
practical and measured approach to Sea Level
rise and Coastal Hazards.
My focus for the next three years includes:
Estuary edge protection for the South Brighton
side of the Estuary, Continued advocacy
for practical approaches to Coastal Hazards,
East for the East
up to date with the progress
made on the two projects by
DCL.
But board chairwoman
Andrea Cummings said DCL
has not played its part in keeping
the board notified.
City councillor David East
said the reports presented at the
city council meeting are yet to be
seen by the board.
“They haven’t been seen by the
board yet. They have been kept
up to date with information,
but DCL are still working on
both [projects] so they haven’t
finalised anything,” he said.
City councillor Glenn
Livingstone said the board needs
to see the feasibility reports, even
if they are not fully complete.
“The board needs to see them .
. . I will push for the board to see
them,” he said.
DCL chief executive Rob Hall
did not respond to the Pegasus
Post.
Hot salt Water Pools in New Brighton, advocacy
and promotion for the future use of the
Residential Red Zone land, a coastal walkway
/ promenade, recognition of the inclusion of
Spencerville and Brooklands in the new ward
and their issues, dealing with flood management
issues in the lower Avon catchment
The Eastern Suburbs has suffered for many
years from neglect and under appreciation.
We are the Coastal window to the city and the
huge potential that the area exudes has been
undervalued, underappreciated and underconsidered
by successive Councils for many
years. My aim is to turn this prejudice around
and realise the great potential the Eastern
Suburbs offer.
I am proud to represent the Ward and continue
to be involved with many organisations. I
seek your vote to continue advocating for our
wonderful community
“A local team for local people”
Readers respond to last
week’s Pegasus Post article
on potentially delaying
repairs to the New Brighton
Pier until March next year
Mark O’Malley: If they are
going to wait till after the surf
carnival to start the repair, they
may as well wait till after the
Duke Festival of Surfing which
attracts over 200 competitors
and finishes on March 26.
Anne Marchant: Pier repairs
should be postponed. Not
over summer, not during surf
carnival, not while the library is
closed. Not until a final design
is found for a ‘fisher’s deck’ (safe
and not smelly) that can be done
at the same time.
Claire Lawrie: I think it
would be good to delay repairs
to the pier until after the summer.
The surf carnival would be
wonderful. Also, do we really
need the upheaval of repairs
over Christmas and the warmer
weather?
Reader Jo Zervos
responds to an article on
community board member
Linda Stewart running
for election in both the
Burwood Ward and the
Rangiora-Ashley Ward.
I was surprised to learn that
Linda Stewart was going to be
standing in Rangiora as well.
However, Linda is a very capable
person and, with nine years of
local community board experience
behind her, obviously has a
good idea what she is in for.
I have dealt with Linda a lot
through the Keep QE II in the
East group and she was also on
the CAG (Community Advisory
Group) regarding the ERS. She
was the only member of the last
board to fully support our community
and CAG group when it
came to the scope of the new QE
II facility the east is getting.
She fully supported extra pool
space, and the extra pool that
the communities were originally
promised in the 2012 annual
plan. She feels that we have been
wronged (as do most), and that
this is unfinished business. She
has also listened to the community
regarding the entirety of QE
II, and would like to be involved
in the upcoming master plan of
the site.
In the past six years of dealing
with the council and board, she
has been the most efficient to
deal with. She has taken the time
to respond to our hundreds of
emails (unlike some), met with
our group and other community
groups supportive of QE II, and
she stood up against management
decisions, often being the
lone voice, when the entire board
should have.
From observing meetings,
Linda often faced a tough battle
getting her voice heard, as other
board members had not taken
the time or made the effort to
meet with the concerned CAG
group members to find out what
their concerns were around the
decisions made during that process.
But she stuck to her guns
and I respect her for that.
We haven’t always seen eye-toeye
and have disagreed at times,
but I am sure she would be quite
capable filling a double role if
elected. Best of luck Linda.
PEGASUS POST Tuesday September 20 2016 7
News
Salt water pools hot election issue
Where would you like to see the New Brighton hot salt water pool
facility built and why? Do you think the city council will be able to
follow through with the promise of building the pools?
Dean Lester:
Coastal Ward
city council
candidate
“The proposed
facility with a 4000
sq m footprint has
a natural location on the New
Brighton foreshore, with the
design ensuring customer comfort
to the 300,000 that may be
attracted annually by providing
protection from the prevailing
winds. Responsibility for this
development falls with Development
Christchurch Ltd,
who has a mandate to catalyse
new investment and development
in Christchurch, thereby
improving economic and social
outcomes for the city. We must
look for and achieve better
social outcomes and grow the
economy in the Coastal Ward.”
Jo Kane: Coastal
Ward city council
candidate
“Built with all environmental
considerations,
including ease
of access, sustainable
funding, in the location that best
sits with the community’s expectations.
Coastal environments are
harsh and unforgiving, therefore,
location, design and maintenance
are a critical factor. The notion
of hot salt water pools has been
around since the 70s and, unless
the council truly commits to a
world class development and the
funding needed, it could become
a dumbed down version and the
legacy project could be deemed
unaffordable. The pools potential
to New Brighton as a destination
could help the economic heart,
but could again break hearts by
not happening.”
David East:
Coastal Ward
city council
candidate
“The hot salt water
pools need to be
built on the foreshore,
north of the pier. In this
location, they will be an added
attraction to activities on the
foreshore and, more importantly,
need to be constructed
in a manner that allows users
to view the beach and pier. The
eastern suburbs has a wide range
of recreation activities that can
be promoted as a reason to come
to the area. They need to be promoted
as a package with the hot
salt water pools as a great finish
to their experience of a wide
range of activities on offer in the
Coastal Ward. Yes, I am cautiously
confident that this project
will be constructed.”
Tim Sintes: Coastal Ward community board candidate
“My first choice would be on the road side of the grassed area next to the library. There has
been talk of closing Marine Parade, if that was the case I would put it back where the road
is. Otherwise, I am just happy to have it somewhere near the beach. As it will come under
Development Christchurch Ltd plans, I definitely believe it will happen. I believe this is the
start of the revitalising of New Brighton.”
Elections 16
Andrea
Cummings:
Coastal Ward
community board
candidate
“The community and
community board
haven’t been a part of the process
and haven’t seen pre-feasibility
reports that incumbent councillors
have seen. This makes it difficult
to have conversations with
ratepayers and form opinions on
the best location for the hot salt
water pools. My assumption is
that having it close to the library
and/or surf club would be useful
in terms of achieving the goals of
rejuvenation that are at the fore
of residents’ wishes. Feasibility is
the core requirement of whether
council will build or not, and I
don’t know the details to be able
to say.”
Kim Money:
Coastal Ward
community board
candidate
“This community,
as requested by the
city council, chose
the hot salt water pools as their
legacy project. Therefore, it must
honour their promise and I believe
they will, especially now Development
Christchurch Ltd and
Regenerate Christchurch have it
on their agendas. With community
agreement my preference for
positioning the pools is between
the pier and New Brighton surf
club, which would allow for a
natural flow to the beach and
New Brighton CBD. The position
must not impact negatively on the
New Brighton Club and residents
opposite. I have supported this
project for years through submissions
and the Pier and Foreshore
Society.”
SCIRT programme on the home straight
SCIRT’s five year programme of repairs to pipes, roads, bridges and retaining
walls is almost complete and we’re aiming to finish construction in December.
The City Council and NZ Transport Agency will continue completing ongoing
repairs to the city's earthquake-damaged infrastructure after SCIRT.
Progress in your neighbourhood
• We’re almost finished connecting homes in Aranui to their new resilient vacuum
wastewater system. Storm water and roading work will continue until the end of the year.
• Pages Road will be getting a new road surface between Cowles Stadium and Anzac
Drive before we finish.
• Installation of a new wastewater pipe along Retreat Road is more than half way
through, and will connect up with the pipe on the other side of the Avon by December.
• We’re more than two thirds through extensive repairs to the wastewater, storm water,
fresh water and roading networks in Parklands.
• The three-year programme of repairs to the wastewater, storm water, fresh water and
roads in Burwood is due to finish in October.
• New Brighton will still see major works to the wastewater network and crews repairing
small sections of road until December.
Your support is helping us to get the job done. Thank you from the SCIRT team.
Elections 16
With
Glenn
Livingstone:
Burwood Ward -
city councillor
A second term councillor,
I bring experience
as a Presbyterian minister to
understanding communities.
I’ve focused on our community
facilities, such as QE11 and the
Aranui Community Centre. I’ve
initiated Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team
and residents meetings over our
numerous roading issues. I’m
passionate about embracing collaborative
processes to determine
the red zone’s future.
I’ve led the renovation of the
old city mission for emergency
housing and played an integral
role developing the Council’s
Housing Policy. A Coast to Coast
competitor, I have a vision that
our ward becomes a draw-card
for sporting, recreational and
environmental activities. I offer
continuity and experience.
Cruize Erueti:
Burwood Ward -
city councillor
We can drive the
development of our
eastern communities,
by working alongside existing
Christchurch initiatives on a
larger scale, within our ward.
This can be achieved with your
local support. It is time for the
east to rise to its feet and stand.
We have proven that we have the
heart, creativity and resilience
to build our community. That
we stand for progression and
development within our community
and for the community.
As important as it is for the people
to have a choice, the people
deserve to have a voice.
Other candidates standing:
Linwood Ward city councillor: Alexandra Davids, Scott Toomey
Linwood Ward, Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board:
Alexandra Davids, Brenda Lowe-Johnson, Jackie Simons, Jack Singh
Burwood Ward, Coastal-Burwood Community Board: Brian Steer
the October 8 deadline looming for the local body elections, the
Pegasus Post asked candidates to send in why they should get your
vote. The eastern suburbs is covered by three wards - Burwood, Coastal
and Linwood. A city councillor is elected from each. Two are selected
from each ward to be on the community board.
Dean Lester:
Coastal Ward -
city councillor
My first house was
in Inwoods Rd and
over the past 20 years
I have enjoyed the easy access to
the beach, sea and forest to walk,
run and bike. These need to be
protected and have good safe
access.
I have advocated as an insurance
expert over the past six
years helping Cantabs in their
David vs. Goliath challenges with
Earthquake Commission and
insurers.
The wealth of local knowledge
must be used to drive our continued
recovery in the right direction.
I want the Coastal Ward
voice to be heard in the enthusiastic
and committed tone used by
the locals.
Jo Kane:
Coastal Ward -
city councillor
Quite frankly the
coastal ward has suffered
a steady decline
due to under investment, over
promises and lack of maintenance
for years. The earthquakes
should have accelerated the
work programme for this area,
instead you’ve been patronised
with grandiose plans and relying
on the tremendous spirit of the
community. Forthright, strong
and experienced as a previous
Deputy Mayor in Waimakariri
and a regional councillor I know
how to get things done. I will
set up an office, live locally and
then vigorously demand that
from Southshore to Brooklands
(including Parklands) that the
priorities set by the community
are funded and actioned.
PEGASUS POST
David East:
Coastal Ward -
city councillor
I have represented
the Coastal Ward for
12 years.
My significant involvement in
this term has been with the QEII
Pool rebuild (about to start), new
high schools on QEII Park and
advocating for the retention of
gravity sewerage in Parklands.
I have also been significantly
involved in coastal hazard management
in the eastern suburbs,
successfully challenging reports
commissioned and advocating
for a practical and measured
approach to sea level rise and
coastal hazards.
I am proud to represent the ward
and continue to be involved with
many organisations. I seek your
vote to continue advocating for
our wonderful community
Yani Johanson: Linwood Ward - city councillor
I’m an experienced councillor seeking re-election. This term of council I have: • Served a
director of Christchurch City Holdings Limited and as a trustee on the Christchurch Arts
Centre, supported libraries, recreation centres, swimming pools, and community centres
rebuilt and repaired in local communities (including a Linwood/Woolston pool as a top priority),
committed to fixing broken suburbs ahead of gold plating the central city, stood firm
on retaining public ownership of public assets, promoted active recreation and creative industries and
stopped most Councillors double-dipping from director’s fees. I’m dedicated to standing up for social
justice, environmental sustainability, and transparent/accountable decision making.
Tim Baker:
Burwood Ward -
Coastal-Burwood
Community Board
I have been an
elected member of
the Community Board for two
terms. I have attended over 100
meetings each year to ensure the
community has been listened to.
I have not promised unrealistic
projects like the waterpark which
delayed the building of the new
QE II by two years and have
realistic expectations of the city
council, Government and community.
The next three years you
need an advocate to help ensure
that the best use of the Red
Zone is realised, stop banks are
renewed to prevent flooding, and
our parks are kept maintained.
Your vote for a competent The
People’s Choice team will ensure
our community will keep going
forward.
Linda Stewart:
Burwood Ward -
Coastal-Burwood
Community Board
I am committed to
the east, politics-free
and I’m seeking a fourth term. In
returning quality of life meaningful
to us this council has underdelivered
on rebuilding quality
roads, permanent stop-banks,
New Brighton’s Legacy Project
and under-providing QE II’s
aquatic capacity.
By working direct with community
I have successfully advocated
for retaining QE II land
sale proceeds for further onsite
development and upgrading the
downsized aquatic replacement
proposal to include a two metre
depth 25 metre pool, lengthened
learn-to-swim pool and a
therapeutically useful spa. I love
our eastern lifestyle and oppose
our community’s assets being
downsized or cashed-in without
transparent community-wide
consultations.
Sela Faletolu-Fasi: Burwood Ward - Coastal-
Burwood Community Board
I currently work in tertiary education for Ara Institute of
Canterbury. I am a Justice of the Peace, a member of the
Youth Advisory Group for the Wayne Francis Charitable
Trust, and also sit on the Staff and Council Advisory
Group, and Pasifika Advisory Group for Ara Institute of Canterbury.
I believe community boards are a vehicle for people to be heard,
those who are confidently vocal, and meaningfully engaging those
who are not. Poverty, mental health and wellbeing are pressing issues
within my ward. Restoring and improving infrastructure is important,
but not more than the basic needs of people.
Andrea
Cummings:
I am the current
Burwood-Pegasus Community
leadership. I have been fortunate
to led a united board overcoming
numerous challenges,
making complex decisions and
overall helping to make the ward
a better place to live.
My passion is advocating for the
recovery and enhancement of
New Brighton and coastal communities
and this earned me an
earthquake award for running a
With three terms on the community board I have helped
enact change and betterment. I speak out with the voice
of my community about the issues that count and action
has been taken. I wish to continue my service because
my passion lies in the east. I am consistently active within most of
people can once again cast
a vote for representation
onto the Environment
Canterbury. The area
is represented by the
Christchurch Constituency,
with four candidates to be
elected.
Dr Cynthia
Roberts
(People’s
Choice):
I am an ecologist
our coastline. Like us, our
Mystery woman pays vet bill
• By Gabrielle Stuart
FOCUSED ON cradling the
broken body of her little dog
after it was hit by a car, Coral
Luscombe didn’t think to ask the
name of the kind stranger who
helped her.
Hours later she found out the
stranger had anonymously
paid $1000 toward her dog’s vet
bill.
Now she just wants to say
thank you.
Ms Luscombe, a sickness beneficiary,
had been out in the yard
with her great nieces when she
said her papillon dog, Poppi, saw
another dog in the park across
Queenspark Drive.
“She shot straight through
the fence. I was screaming at
her, Poppi, Poppi, stop. One car
missed her, but then she was
hit and she was dragged under
the car. I just screamed, and the
elderly lady with her dog across
the road screamed as well,” she
said.
The driver stopped, and a
small crowd gathered.
The stranger was among them,
a woman who looked to be in her
late 30s, she said.
She had been further up the
road and had seen the accident
happen, and offered to drive
KINDNESS: Coral Luscombe and her dog Poppi, who had to have two operations after being hit by a car, PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Ms Luscombe and Poppi to the
vet.
“I remember her saying she
had animals and had been in
the same situation herself,” Ms
Luscombe said.
She turned down the offer and
drove herself to the vet, but she
found out later the woman had
followed her and paid the bill
after she left.
Poppi needed two operations
to clean her wounds and perform
skin grafts, a night in the
hospital, and may still need a toe
removed.
The bill added up to more than
$1300, and Ms Luscombe said
paying it would have made the
next few months a struggle.
When the vet called later that
day to say most of the bill had
been paid, she could not believe
it.
“I was in shock. I sat down and
burst into tears,” she said.
She said she would love to
meet the woman and “say a million
thank yous.”
“Just thinking there is a
beautiful soul out there who
would be kind enough to do this
for me and my little dog, it shows
there are still good people out
there.”
‘Fearless’ Andy makes news
North Beach surfer
in Hawaiian shark
attack drama
THE FRIEND of a Christchurch
holiday-maker who rushed to
the aid of a woman attacked
by a shark in Hawaii says he is
“fearless”.
North Beach resident Andy
Chapman was surfing at Mākaha
Beach on Oahu Island when a
woman was attacked by a shark
about 100m from him.
He paddled towards her after
she screamed for help, but before
he got there, she was pulled from
the water by other surfers and
lifeguards.
It is believed the 51-year-old
woman, a regular swimmer at
the beach, may have been attacked
by a 3m tiger shark. She
suffered gashes to her shoulder,
upper back and forearm.
Burwood-Pegasus Community
Board member Tim Sintes has
known Mr Chapman for about
35 years and was a groomsman at
his wedding.
NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf 1 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m.
Mr Sintes said Mr Chapman
was “fearless” and a real “down
to earth” guy.
“What he did in Hawaii did
not surprise me at all,” Mr Sintes
said.
“He would have been back in
the water the next day.”
Mr Chapman, 57, was on
holiday with his wife, Ineke, who
is the chairwoman of the North
Beach Residents’ Association.
Mr Chapman told the New
Zealand Herald the woman
looked as if she had been slit
open with a razor blade in about
three places and there was a lot
of blood.
“In the water, there is a definite
code of looking after others. A
swimmer on their own seems to
be a lot more vulnerable and also
will have more limbs in the water
acting as bait,” Mr Chapman
said.
He said he had never experienced
anything like this, but it
would not deter him from getting
back in the water.
Mr Sintes said the Chapmans
were keen surfers in both New
Brighton and Kaikoura, where
they go most weekends.
“Both of them have got this
incredible enthusiasm for life.
You hear the saying of work
hard, play hard, and that
would sum them up perfectly,”
he said.
A similar attack happened at
Mākaha Beach six months ago,
when a 10-year-old boy was
mauled by a shark.
Encouraging ExcEllEncE in our community
The Principal’s Desk
Students enjoying and sharing their learning is
what i enjoy the most as Principal. This is evident
in events such as school productions. our recent
“Popstars the 90s Musical” production provided
students an opportunity to step outside their
comfort zone and perform in front of their peers,
family, and community. i was amazed at the talent
of our wonderful performers who sang those
familiar 90s musical sounds. i take this opportunity
to congratulate the cast, directors, and stagehands
on their contribution to wonderful and successful
Harry romana,
Principal
performances. i also congratulate our teachers and parents who helped
with rehearsals, costumes, and props. Thank you to you all.
Mairehau high School continues as a solid, viable co-educational school
in the east of christchurch. We continue working with other schools,
clusters, and community sector groups to develop a plan which will
enhance the provision of education for all students in christchurch. all
schools want students to access quality education outcomes, to access
quality teaching, and quality learning. We can provide a friendly nurturing
learning environment for all students. our students are our priority.
Mairehau high School is in a strong position to offer students
opportunities which will enable them to become decent, worthwhile
citizens of the world, people who will contribute to their communities.
Students who pass through our school gates, learn in our classrooms,
and access technology through our wireless internet provision will be
well set in the future.
Future of Mairehau High School property
Mairehau high School will be entering the ‘Master Planning building
stage’ this July. The Ministry of education (Moe), school and community
are expecting roll growth in the near future. as a school and community,
we are planning for the growth in our school.
The school has completed the Moe’s education Brief which provides
a framework for Mairehau high School to develop and document our
vision for delivering teaching and learning in the future and how that
translates into a property solution that enables and supports Mairehau
high School’s education vision.
The government’s investment in Mairehau high School is most
immediately a response to the earthquakes that have had a significant
impact on our schools and community. at the same time, it is important
that the educational community uses this unique investment wisely,
to ensure re-building provides the best possible platform for effective
teaching and learning into the future, informed by increasing knowledge
about how children and young people learn and what they need to learn
at school to prepare for their futures as connected, capable, life-long
learners.
i trust you are able to pass on to your friends and family, the opportunities
that a co-education school such as Mairehau high School can provide
for christchurch east. Thank you to everyone who attended our ‘open
evening’ and braved the cold winter night.
Harry Romana
Principal.
Open Evening
Thank you to all those
who attended our open
evening on Tuesday 31
May. Despite the cold and
dreary weather, many
prospective students
and their families braved
the elements to see and
enjoy what our wonderful
school has to offer.
Many parents and
members of our community commented on the helpfulness of our guides. it’s
our students who know our school best, and it was wonderful to hear many of
them telling prospective families their feelings towards our school; that they
loved being part of a small, community school with a true family feel.
if you missed our open evening for this year, please ring the office for a 2017
Prospectus and we will gladly send it on to you. if you would like to discuss
your child’s high school education with us, Mrs Shaw, the Principal’s secretary,
will make the necessary appointment.
‘indispute’, made up of Year 13 students lorne Joblin, Kaisie Van Dyk and
selected for the rockquest regional
Final which was held on 1 July. Sadly
they didn’t move on from the regionals
and he was happy with getting as far as
they did.
Outdoor
Education
on Tuesday 7 June, the Senior outdoor education
class embarked on an overnight adventure to Mt
oxford. Faced with well-below-zero temperatures,
the first thing on the agenda was to light a bonfire
to keep us toasty – and the marshmallows of
course!
For dinner, students cooked spuds on the open
fire – some were boiled, some were baked, and
some made fries.
after a chilly night in the tents, we were up
at 5.30am for bacon, eggs, spaghetti and hot
chocolate before we attempted to climb Mt
oxford. By 8am, we were an hour into the climb
and we had the most eerily warm weather – and
we were stripping down the layers of clothing –
even though we were standing in a few inches of
snow. We made it half way up, and then Year 12
student Dallas had a run-in with a tree (literally),
and we decided it was best to make the tramp
down to camp. By this stage we were in a foot
of beautiful powdery snow – so we had an epic
snow fight before we departed. although we
were disappointed we could not continue to the
summit, we had an awesome time and we look
forward to our next adventure.
Popstars - The 90’s Musical
after 3 months of rehearsals, our drama production for
2016, ‘PoPSTarS – the 90’s musical’ was presented to
enthusiastic and welcoming audiences, both in the
morning matinee and evening performances.
The cast was brilliant, with a few new talents emerging
and our ‘seasoned professionals’ stole the show with
fantastic singing and acting.
The production was very well supported by the
community. Thank you to everyone who was involved.
Year 12 students pitch in to
an area of wetland damaged by fire in 2014 was restored to its former glory with help from Mairehau
high School students and the university of canterbury Volunteer army (SVa). in 2014, vandals drove a car
into halswell Quarry, destroying an area of native planting before setting fire to a section of boardwalk.
in March, Year 12 students Shilah Norman, Kodie North, and Madi Maxwell-Mcginn, alongside the uc
SVa, took on the restoration project as part of the SVa’s uc volunteer programme, and in the space
of a few hours transformed the wetland area. The uc programme encourages secondary students to
become leaders in their communities through volunteering while being mentored by SVa members.
Despite it being a rainy day the girls,
and other students from christchurch
schools, arrived eager to get to
work. one crew set about rebuilding
the damaged boardwalk, another
group cleared around young native
plantings and another group used
Ensuring a safe work place
Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe
work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the
wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that
in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues,
but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or
on to the sports field?
not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place
can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators
does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy
machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance
service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid
course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social.
take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high
risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that
they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability
to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course
of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium
risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a
spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight
hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and
26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,
hypothermia and poisonings.
The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in
fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most
common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children
are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in
australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents
or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far
behind those in the workplace.
The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard
6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk
environments. This course covers many of the skills required to
deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result
in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes
such as motor vehicle accidents.
if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask
your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the
course content and give you options that will best suit your needs.
Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your
location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is
up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where
it is located.
FLYING HIGH: Every day, between 11am and 4pm kites are flown on the beach near the New
so dress appropriately and go along, any time of the year. Held on New Brighton Beach, near
Freedom to learn and explore
As a parent herself, Tiny Tots Nursery and
Preschool owner and operator, Rebecca Ellis knows
only too well how important your child’s welfare
and learning is.
For the highest quality care and education for
your children Tiny Tots Nursery and Preschool is
a privately owned and family operated centre that
ensures peace of mind through their commitment
to your child’s needs.
“Over the years I’ve found that the best results for
happy, socially well-adjusted children who are free
to explore and grow, come from an environment
that has flexible routines, changing challenges and
a caring professional, qualified and experienced
teaching team,” says Rebecca.
Tiny Tots provides a safe and secure environment
in which children can learn, create and grow to the
best of their abilities. Observing the children at play
Lindisfarne - Developing
Children’s feelings of self-worth
Lindisfarne Nursery School was established
by Tricia Cuthbert in 1987 and remains part of
the Cuthbert family today. We are committed to
Christchurch, to our community, our Lindisfarne
families, and most importantly the futures and
happiness of our children.
We believe in developing children’s feelings
of self-worth, and encouraging tolerance and
understanding of others.
Our teachers all hold a
Diploma of Teaching in Early
Childhood, and one holds a
Diploma of Teaching in Primary as
well as early childhood. She prepares
programme tailored to
each child’s unique needs.
This helps the children to
extend on their learning and
enhances their development
while in an open learning
environment.
Tiny Tots is a small, homely centre with a real
family feel and has a great open plan environment
both indoors and out. Children are provided with
high quality equipment, resources and facilities to
support each child’s learning and development.
Teachers encourage parents to spend time with
their children in the centre, especially to help them
settle in, which also helps parents to discover how
the centre operates throughout the day.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
PEGASUS POST
Effective treatment for many
types of pain
Complementary medicine is becoming
increasingly sought after in New Zealand
as people become aware of the many
different methods of treating pain and ill
health that are available here.
Christchurch-based Chinese health
practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a
method of treatment, which she says has
as an immediate affect on a wide variety of
pains and health conditions. It is known
as ‘acupuncture without needles’.
Lan describes it as being similar to
reflexology in that the problem area on
the body is determined through pressure,
but is much more accurate.
Trained as a medical practitioner in
China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992
and began practising acupuncture in
1995. From that discipline she created her
acupuncture without needles, and uses
it to treat people of all ages with many
different types of pain in all parts of the
body. This can include arthritic pain, MS,
and pain from injury.
“For example, the treatment has been
very successful for people who have
painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan
says.
Acupuncture without needles is also
effective in restoring energy levels,
she says.
“As people age their energy is reduced,
and this can lead to other health
problems. The acupuncture without
needles treatment is like the body’s
battery being charged up again, so their
energy levels are restored, which in turn
helps overcome their health problems.”
Lan also uses it to treat depression
and anxiety, and says it can help with
addiction problems as well.
“After the treatment the person has no
cravings – because it treats the cause of
the addiction.”
She says the results are immediate,
though people may need several
treatments, depending on the extent
of their health problem, and while it
is slightly painful for few moments,
everyone can tolerate it.
Lan Xiao’s website, www.
drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz, includes
videos of people whose health problems
have been overcome after receiving the
treatment.
Her clinic is located at 108 Sawyers
Arms Road, and her hours are Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 12pm to
5pm. To discuss your health issues or
make an appointment, phone 323 4168
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Research
Supports
Eye Health
Nutritional researchers have discovered a range
of nutrients that are essential for eye health. Some
of the most essential nutrients that have been
shown to protect and even improve eye function
are:
Selenium, is a trace mineral that is low in
N.Z. soils and therefore in many of our foods.
Researchers believe selenium may help prevent
cataracts, macular degeneration (the leading cause
of impaired vision in older people) and may also
improve dry eyes and general eye health.
Zinc is a mineral that a large percentage of the
population are low in. Zinc has been shown to
help protect the eyes from the damaging effects
of light as well as slow vision loss due to macular
degeneration.
Vitamin C, Citrus Bioflavonoids, Beta-carotene
(Pro-vitamin A) and Copper have potent
antioxidant ability and help protect the eyes from
damage
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are amazing nutrients
that have been shown in landmark research to
not only provide potent eye protection but may
even help reverse some of the signs of age-related
macular degeneration (AMD).
Bilberry and Blackcurrant, high in potent
antioxidants may help protect the lens and retina
from damage and reduce the risk of cataracts. They
also may help improve blood supply to the eye,
strengthen the small capillaries of the eye and may
help improve night vision, may alleviate many eye
ailments including eye fatigue that may be caused
by reading, driving and computers.
Eyebright may help normalise eye pressure and
reduce eye allergies.
Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for
correct eye function. It may also have a detoxifying
affect on the eye.
Vitamin B2 may help alleviate eye fatigue,
bloodshot eyes and maintain good vision.
Yumberry is the latest in eye protection. It
provides many nutrients, is rich in oligomeric
proanthocyanidins (OPC’s) that are potent
antioxidants that may protect eyesight.
These nutrients taken in a therapeutic amount
should provide comprehensive eye protection, may
slow and possibly even help reverse eye damage
that could lead to loss of vision. All these nutrients
are available in an economical one a day easy to
swallow capsule.
Care For Your Joints
They’re critical to remain
healthy and mobile
Refuse to accept joint pain and stiffness as part of life. Do
the work to maintain and support your joints to get the
best out of them for as long as possible.
Research from Johns Hopkins
University confirms that in the
treatment of arthritis, exercise and
physical activity has many benefits.
• Regular exercise helps keep
muscles around the joints strong,
decrease bone loss and control joint
swelling and pain.
• Strengthening the muscles
surrounding affected joints helps
to relieve pressure on the joint and
cartilage.
• Regular exercise helps replenish
lubrication of the joint cartilage and
reduces stiffness and pain.
• Lack of physical activity is
associated with increased muscle
weakness, joint stiffness, reduced
range of motion and fatigue
• Exercise needs to be directed at
the entire body and not just the joints
that are affected with arthritis.
A Gut Feeling
Digestive health is becoming increasingly important
for improving our overall wellbeing. As there is a
distinct connection between our tummy and our
moods, immunity and even our behaviours, it pays
to follow your gut if you feel out of sorts with
these nutritional enhancer
Dietary fibre is made up of
three types and each play a
different role throughout the
digestive tract. It’s often a
case of balancing them all and not only
supplementing with just one. To ensure
you get enough fibre in your diet: women
should aim for 25 grams to 30 grams
and men 30 grams to 38 grams each day.
Soluble fibre are found in oats, psyllium,
vegetables, fruits with their skin on and
supplements like Metamucil. Insoluble
fibre can be found in wheat bran pasta
and quinoa. Resistant starch is contained
in cold cooked pasta, potatoes and firm,
fresh bananas.
Probiotics and prebiotic foods can help
keep the correct pH balance(acidity to
alkalinity) in our intestines. These ‘good’
bacteria assist with breaking down fibre
in the bowel and produce healthy stool
movements. Probiotics can be found in
supplements, cultured yoghurt, kombucha
drinks and fermented vegetables. Prebiotic
foods are Jerusalem artichokes and raw
garlic, leeks and onions.
Poor gut health could be caused by,
but not limited to, high stress levels,
caffeine, smoking or inadequate water
consumption. If you suffer from prolonged
periods of reflux, constipation, diarrhoea
or cramping and nausea, seek medical
advice. Your doctor may help identify
Enjoy unique shopping to be found at Women’s Expo
With over 200 sites to browse, unique businesses to discover,
shopping, bargains and laughter, the Expo is the ultimate day
out for every woman.
One of the appeals the Expo has to
visitors is the variety of companies
involved with everything from
jewellery and shoes to activewear
and fitness to skincare and health
products to gourmet food and wine
and even a company offering plantbased
cooking classes for Kids &
Adults. There really is something for
everyone and all ages.
Renee Murray from NZME Events,
organiser of the Expo says “Our
aim is to have as wide of a range
of companies involved with the
Expo as possible. Women are all
different and their individual interests
are so diverse. One woman
may love the latest in makeup or
skincare but the woman beside
her may be more interested in
cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail
or sampling handmade cheese.
It’s great on the weekend to see
all the various women visit the
show, from teenagers to business
women, mothers to grandmothers
and friends simply enjoying each
other’s company. It’s becoming
more common for us to see three
generations visit the Expo together
as well, with the daughter, mother
and grandmother all enjoying the
show and spending the day with
each other.”
Brandhouse will exhibit at the Expo
for the first time with their range of
champagne, vodka, port and wines.
Popular at other Expo’s this year
has been the Royal Dragon’s elite
flavour vodka collection with some
flavours selling out. Introducing
the most tantalizing and unique
flavoured vodka collection of its time
flavours include Watermelon, Green
Apple, Passion Fruit, Chocolate and
Lychee… A great vodka collection
to enjoy neat, on the rocks or in
your favourite cocktail! Visit the
large Brandhouse site at the show
to sample from their fabulous range
and take home what you love.
Christinz Clothing will visit the show
for the first time, travelling from
Balclutha to showcase her selection
sizes and with pink, gold, navy, black
their exclusive High Protein Muesli. Not
not only tastes great but helps with weight
management, health and fitness. Without
processed breakfast foods contain these
mueslis will keep you fuller for longer and
with flavours including
Berry, Peach &
Nectarine and Feijoa
you will want to buy
