Call for 

police 

station to 

stay open

A CALL is being made for the 

New Brighton Police Station to be 

open on Saturdays. 

The Coastal-Burwood 

Communtiy Board has asked 

police chiefs to open the Seaview 

Rd station on Saturday morning. 

The move is being backed by 

New Brighton Business and 

Landowners Association’s Paul 

Lonsdale. 

“There are concerns by businesses 

that there has been an 

increase of shop theft lately and 

we have been in talks with police 

on how to mitigate those issues 

and find solutions,” he said. 

Community board member and 

city councillor David East said 

police also needed to consider 

opening longer on weekdays than 

its current 9am-4pm. 

City councillor Glenn Livingstone 

said with the new beachside 

playground and salt water hot 

pools, increased police presence in 

the area would be beneficial. 

“Having them on site would 

make a lot more sense.” 

Currently police are required to 

come from Papanui for call-outs 

to eastern suburbs during the 

weekends.

NEW BRIGHTON people want 

the police station in Seaview Rd 

to be open at the weekends (see 

page 1). 

And in my mind, there’s no reason 

why it shouldn’t. New Brighton 

and surrounding seaside suburbs 

are an area in their own right; 

different to other Christchurch 

suburbs which roll into each other. 

Brighton people have always 

been very community-minded 

and the Pages Rd bridge acts like a 

border of sorts. 

The Brighton police station used 

to be open on the weekends (from 

memory) and local police dealt 

with local problems. 

But centralisation, decentralisation, 

and other ‘isations’ as different 

police administrations changed 

over the years has seen the station 

become a fort, where messages are 

left at the gate, and if there’s any 

troops inside they might be called 

out to fight the good fight.

Still no solution over midge problem

City councillor Glenn Livingstone 

refused to discuss the matter 

with Pegasus Post, saying: 

“It’s a complex matter and 

not easily resolved and it’s 

better if we assemble as much 

information as possible before 

putting it out there.” 

Ms Stewart said her solution 

would work. 

“This should’ve been put in 

place 20 years ago.” 

She said in the late 1990s, the 

South New Brighton Residents’ 

Association fought hard for UV 

protection. But city council staff 

said it would only be added if 

needed. 

The cost has now increased 

from less than $5 million in the 

late 1990s to an estimated $23 

million, she said. 

But Ms Stewart said UV 

protection takes time, time

weather around the corner. 

Bus stops 

at Palms 

to double

BUS STOPS outside The Palms 

Shopping Centre are set to double 

in size to accommodate the 

number of passengers in the area. 

The city council is seeking 

feedback on the plan that will 

see a suburban bus interchange 

be put in outside the mall – 

similar to the mega stop outside 

Northlands Shopping Centre. 

Although not to the same scale. 

Two bus stops are set to be 

upgraded, one on Shirley Rd 

adjacent to Shirley Intermediate 

School. 

The second is on New Brighton 

Rd outside the south end of the 

mall. 

The proposal is to extend the 

painted on road bus stops to 

accommodate two buses at the 

same time. 

City council staff said the 

bus routes that service the area 

are high frequency which often 

results in two buses attending the 

stop simultaneously. 

“As each stop currently only 

caters for one bus when a second 

bus arrives it may overhang the 

bus stop and can obstruct traffic,” 

they said.

Smoke alarms need 

to stay on the ceilings

WE HAD a fatal fire in 

Christchurch last week. 

So it was not the best week in 

our office. 

Part of what we do is to 

constantly strive to prevent such

people have smoke alarms and 

escape plans. 

In the tragic loss in Cashel St 

(right) there were some smoke 

alarms. 

They were correctly installed 

but we don’t know if they had 

been maintained. 

The last one, still sounding

was found. 

But this one wasn’t on the 

ceiling where the backing plate 

remained. 

It had been brought down too 

low to give adequate warning. 

Had the alarm just been left on 

the ceiling, at the highest point

Then they desperately try to fix 

a situation that is beyond them.

Most cooking fires will be controllable 

but only if you’re there 

when they start. 

There was a slightly odd fire 

cause in Woolston on August 

12 where a low sun through 

the window reflected off a 

magnifying mirror causing 

curtains to start smoking. 

This happens occasionally. 

However, it’s one of those 

things that most of us would 

never consider. 

Call for nominations 

for road trauma awards 

ORGANISATIONS and people 

who deal with road accidents 

will be recognised for their 

work. 

The Canterbury Road Trauma 

Awards will be held at the Road 

Accident Remembrance Day at 

North Hagley Park on Saturday, 

November 4. 

Nominations for the awards 

are now being called for. 

Road Traffic Accident Trauma 

Charitable Trust spokeswoman, 

Sarah Dean, said the effects of 

road trauma extends far beyond 

the victims involved in the 

initial incident. 

The awards are seen as recognition 

and acknowledgement of 

this, she said. 

There are three award 

categories, Canterbury road 

trauma award for public 

service, trauma prevention and 

community service. 

The public service award will 

be for outstanding individuals, 

teams or organisations, who 

will receive recognition for their 

service and contribution to the 

duty of care for those affected by 

road trauma. This award is open 

to first responders, industry 

professionals from non-profit 

organisations and private and 

public organisations. 

The award for trauma 

prevention aims to recognise 

winners for their contribution 

to road safety, public education, 

road trauma prevention 

initiatives and duty of care in 

Canterbury. 

Those members of the community 

who have provided care 

or support to a road trauma victim 

throughout their treatment, 

recovery or rehabilitation will 

also be recognised through the 

community service award.

SHIRLEY BOYS’ High School’s 

senior basketball team will face 

an uphill battle going into the 

Thompson Trophy semi-final 

against Cashmere High tonight. 

Shirley made the semi-final after 

a hard fought 94-84 win over 

Ashburton College last week. 

Cashmere beat Shirley, also 

known as ‘The Spartans’, 91-53 in 

round three of the competition, 

handing Shirley one of only three 

losses this season. 

That gives them the underdog 

status as they head to Cashmere 

for the 5.45pm game, Shirley 

coach Scott Howell said. 

Good decisions and limiting 

their mistakes will be key factors 

in beating the stacked Cashmere 

side, Howell said. 

Shirley captain and standout 

player Sean Kelly will lead the 

team in the semi-final clash, with 

one goal ticked off for the year by 

making the semis. 

Howell believes this year’s 

team is very strong and has a 

good chance of making the final. 

They are looking forward 

to pursuing their next goal 

of qualifying for the national 

tournament at the South Island 

tournament in Dunedin from 

September 6-9. 

Cashmere coach Ben Sheat 

said it was vital to stick to their 

structure and continue to control 

the defensive end if the team is to 

beat Shirley. 

“Lots of players have 

contributed in different ways 

to the group [this season] but 

Connor Mclaughlin, Oki Tilaia 

and Tom Russ-Hofmans have 

been outstanding,” he said. 

Cashmere beat Christchurch 

Boys’ High 99-51 last week to 

make the semi-final.

Timaru Boys’ High on Saturday. 

They are in the final after a 

tough, come-from-behind battle 

against Nelson College, which 

required the depth off the bench 

to get them home 40-34 after 

trailing 29-12 at halftime. 

The last time CBHS met 

Timaru was in round three, with 

CBHS winning 22-17.

are the undisputed champions 

of girls rugby in the city after 

clinching their third consecutive 

UC Cup title on Wednesday. 

The girls made short work of 

Burnside-Rangi 36-7, running 

in six tries on the Ilam Fields to 

record their second consecutive 

undefeated season in the UC Cup. 

Their last loss was against 

Motueka Girls’ High in the 

Crusader regional playoff last 

year. 

Coach Jaime Livingstone 

said it was rewarding to see 

against Nelson and provided a 

few moments of magic to help 

the team get home. 

The final will be played at 

CBHS’s Straven Rd ground. 

CBHS have made a bit of a 

habit of going behind and then 

making a comeback, but they 

will look to correct that on 

Saturday. 

Timaru made the final after a 

solid 24-10 over Christ’s College 

in Timaru. Meanwhile, St Bede’s 

will play Marlborough Boys’ 

College in the bowl final after 

beating Shirley Boys’ High 36-33, 

while St Andrew’s missed out on 

a spot in the plate final after a 57- 

14 defeat to Waimea Combined. 

Girls’ High pull off three-peat

LAMB LEG IN A POT 

Ingredients 

1 Leg of lamb 

1 head Garlic 

3 cups Red wine, (soft ie merlot) 

2 Bay leaves 

10 Black peppercorns 

1 sprig Fresh rosemary 

3 Oranges, zest and juice 

1 Beef stock, or water 

1 to taste Salt 

2 Tbsp Raw sugar 

Directions 

Sit the joint in your pot and set your oven to 

medium. 

Pour at least 3 cups of a “soft” red wine 

over the meat (merlot for example). 

Add a whole head of garlic, 2 bay leaves, 

10 peppercorns, a small sprig of rosemary 

and the zest and juice of three oranges. 

The lamb doesn’t need to be covered but it 

needs to be well bathed. 

Top up with water or beef stock to mid 

level, season with salt and 2 tablespoons of 

raw sugar. 

Put the lid on and cook for at least one and 

a half hours, the meat should be fall-apart 

tender. 

Tip: Check the seasoning and serve 

with lots of juices, wilted winter greens 

and maybe some fresh mint sauce. 

CHICKEN BREAST, 

JALAPENO CRUMBS AND 

HONEY YAMS 

( SERVES 4 ) 

Ingredients 

2 tsp Salt, plus extra for 

seasoning 

1 cup Breadcrumbs, fresh 

1 Spring onion, finely diced 

2 Jalapeno chilli, finely diced 

1 Tbsp Coriander 

1 Lemon, zest 

2 Tbsp Vegetable oil, plus 1 Tbsp 

extra 

1 Tbsp Honey 

16 Yams 

1 tsp Cumin seeds 

1 Tbsp Avocado chilli oil 

3 Carrots, peeled and sliced 

4 Chicken breasts 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. 

Line two baking trays. 

Combine the breadcrumbs with 

the salt, chillies, spring onion, 

coriander, lemon zest and oil. 

Slice the yams and toss with 

the honey, salt, cumin seeds and 

chilli avocado oil. 

Peel and slice the carrots - add 

to the yams and bake for 30 

minutes. 

Place the chicken breasts on 

the tray, then season and cover 

with the crumbs, tightly packed. 

Bake for 20 minutes, then remove 

and let rest while covered 

with foil for 10 minutes.

More products, faster service 

Ferrymead’s popular Mitre 10 MEGA has expanded, with a 

spacious, new facility opening this week for its trade and DIY 

customers, and a new Landscaping Zone installed. 

Located right next door to the current drive-thru facility, the 

new outlet replaces the former Trade drive-thru, which has been 

closed so earthquake repairs can be undertaken. This will be 

reopened at a later date as a drive-thru and storage area. 

The culmination of almost four years’ work, which involved a 

complete fit-out to an existing building, the new 3200sqm premises 

and drive-thru facility is 50 per cent larger than the current drivethru, 

providing a much greater space for product display as well as 

easier and quicker access for tradespeople and DIY customers to 

purchase supplies. 

Trade manager John Barltrop says the new space also makes 

it easier for Mitre 10 team members to process orders efficiently 

during busy periods, while continuing to provide a high level of 

service for customers. 

The space features wide aisles with an extensive range of framing 

and finishing timbers, along with all the common wallboards and 

fixings. 

The other outstanding feature of Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead’s 

new site is the outdoor Timber Yard and Landscaping Zone, 

covering a further 7000sqm. This new area presents an extensive 

range of Landscaping supplies and incorporates 19 bulk bins, 

stocking a wide range of product including compost, lawn 

mix, bark, aggregates and decorative stone, giving professional 

landscapers and DIY customers plenty of options for their home 

and property improvement projects. 

Trailers are available free of charge to transport landscaping 

purchases.

Mairehau High School is in a strong

challenges. 

Teachers within our school are leading and developing key initiatives which 

will provide students with the skills, capabilities and fluency to enable them 

to be successful life-long learners in a digital world. In our school, we use 

our head, heart and hands which enable us to describe the critical thinking 

student who is numerate and literate; a student who can take responsibility 

for their own learning and manage themselves. The students who pass 

through our school gates, learn in our classrooms, and access technology 

through our wireless internet provision, will be well set in the future to access 

tertiary or employment opportunities. 

Mairehau High School has implemented Modern Learning Practices through 

the schools Year 9 and Year 10 flexible learning environment initiative this 

year. our school continues to implement innovative and creative strategies to 

support and enhance school improvement and student achievement. 

To accommodate roll growth, a multimillion dollar building project is in the 

planning stage to transform Mairehau High School, and ensure secondary 

school co-educational school provision in the East of Christchurch. The 

school is about to enter the design stage. At the moment, we are waiting on 

key compliance reports to be completed before building can take place. 

Christchurch East Secondary Schools 

All Christchurch East Secondary Schools are passionate about improving 

achievement and learning outcomes for all. Mairehau High School is 

connecting and building relationships with Te Ara Tūhura, a cluster of Primary 

and Early Childhood schools in the East. This cluster is focused on improved 

outcomes for all our learners, in each of our schools. our school is also 

very keen to continue to foster strong relationships with our local tertiary 

institutions such as the university of Canterbury, Ara, Southern Institute of 

Technology, and Lincoln university. I am confident in working with other East 

Christchurch Secondary schools and education providers on the future and 

quality of Teaching and Learning for our learners.

I take this opportunity to acknowledge Mr Mark Bell ( former Deputy 

Principal) and to congratulate and wish him all the very best in his new 

role as an Education Review Evaluator. Mark has contributed significantly 

to Mairehau High School and we know that he will make a huge impact in 

making a positive difference to many other schools in his new position.

Congratulations 

We would like to congratulate our Deputy Principal, Mark 

Bell, on his appointment to a position at the Education 

Review office. 

It was with great sadness, but with our very best wishes, 

that we farewelled Mark at the end of Term 2. Mark had 

been at Mairehau High School for over 14 years, and was 

a highly respected and much beloved member of our 

school community. 

He was a wonderful ambassador for our school, always 

championing us to the wider community. Mark believed in our school, and 

believed in our students, always encouraging them to shoot for the stars and 

have pride in themselves. It is fair to say he enriched the lives of many students 

and staff in his time at Mairehau High School. 

Mark was welcomed to the Education Review office in a dignified and moving 

ceremony in Dunedin during the school holidays, with Harry Romana, the 

Principal, and Rebecca Swanson, the Assistant Principal, travelling to support 

him on behalf of the school. 

We wish him all the best in his new position at ERo. Kia kaha, Mr Bell. go well! 

Mark Bell 

It is our pleasure to announce that after a rigorous recruiting 

process, Ms Siobhan Murphy has been appointed to the 

position of Deputy Principal to Mairehau High School. 

Siobhan joins our staff in Term 4 as Deputy Principal from 

Aranui High School, where she was Assistant Principal in 2016. 

Siobhan’s association with Aranui High School began in 1989 

when she accepted a Homeroom position, teaching a junior 

class all their compulsory subjects, except PE. Further roles 

at Aranui included HoD Social Sciences, Dean, Tutor and 

more recently, the School garden’s chief gnome. Siobhan is very much looking 

forward to reconnecting with ex-colleagues and students from Aranui who are 

now at Mairehau High School. 

Siobhan lives in Mairehau with her husband Andrew. Together they have two 

children studying at university who they catch up with during holidays and 

hear from when the fridge in their flat needs refilling. During winter the whole 

family enjoys spending time together at Broken River Ski field. 

This year Siobhan has embarked on a Masters degree as well as learning Te Reo 

(Māori Language) which means her garden has been left to grow wild and due 

to the lack of exercise, her dog Alfie is growing larger and larger. Focussing 

on learning so intensely, Siobhan has found herself “walking in her students’ 

shoes” and she realises that being a student in 2017 can be very challenging 

and exciting at the same time. The range of learning opportunities at Mairehau 

High School encouraging passion and offering individual challenges to both 

students and staff are what excites Siobhan most about joining us here.

Top Student Excellence Award 

During the recent term break, Year 11 Student Cody McCallum 

attended the Blue Light Youth Course run at the Burnham 

Military Camp. Cody did extremely well on this and was awarded 

the Top Student Excellence Award out of 30 students who were 

on the course. 

Cody has a definite career pathway in place – and we hope to 

see Cody in a police officer’s uniform in the next few years.

Encouraging ExcEllEncE in our community 

Tena koutou katoa 

At the end of Term 2, Mairehau High 

School was represented at Ngā Manu 

Kōrero - our regional Māori speech 

competition for both the Canterbury 

and West Coast regions, for the first 

time in 6 years. 

We were fortunate to have two of 

our students stand to represent us 

this year. We had Phoenix Neilson 

represent us in the Senior Māori 

section, and La Bella Currin-Waru 

represent us in the Senior English 

section. It was the first time both 

students had ever stood to represent 

at Ngā Manu Kōrero and did so in 

front of all of the competing schools 

in both the Canterbury and West 

Coast regions. Just getting to this 

point was an achievement in itself, 

not to mention that both of our 

representative students are in Year 

11 and were standing up against 

Year 12 and 13 students from the 

other competing schools. 

Both students did a great job and 

represented our school with pride. 

At the end of both speeches our 

newly established kapahaka group, under the reins of our new kapahaka tutor 

Miss Satriani Reihana, stood and performed our recently composed Mairehau High 

School haka for the first time in a public arena, with great passion. 

A lot of milestones were achieved that day.

Hagley Dance Company 

on the 10th of August Hagley Dance 

Company came to our school to run a 90 

minute work shop. This was offered to all year 

11 - 13 Performing Arts students. It began 

with a performance by the Dance Company 

of a Maori inspired contemporary piece 

which was incredibly moving. They then ran 

a full muscle and bone warm up and then 

everyone split into groups to learn some 

contemporary choreography. This was great 

for dancers of all levels and everyone came 

away with a good experience.

FLT (Flexible Learning Time) 

Mystery dish 

We recently had a visit from Canterbury university who delivered interactive lessons to 

all Year 9 and Year 10 students in FLT (Flexible Learning Time). Students learnt about 

water purification in developing countries and about the many economic and practical 

issues which impact upon this. our students created water filters in groups and were 

given budgets and materials in accordance with the nation they were allocated. 

our Year 9 students also have a Life Skills class which 

is covered in FLT. Some of the topics covered have 

been gardening, how to change a car tyre, meditation, 

driver education, cooking from a mystery food box and 

problem solving. 

Flexible Learning Time (or FLT) enables our students 

in Year 9 and 10 to engage in personalised, crosscurricular 

and real-life learning opportunities for 3 

hours each week. The emphasis is on our students 

choosing and directing their own learning journey with 

the support of their teaching team. 

Most recently our Year 10s worked on projects that 

might contribute to their future career selection whilst 

our Year 9s worked on projects that involved them 

learning invaluable life skills, though generally not on 

a school curriculum. Both projects involved students Learning to make water purifiers 

embracing new experiences and extending their 

knowledge, skills and thinking. 

Smokefree Rockquest 2017 

Rockquest was founded by two music teachers in 1988 (glenn 

Common and Pete Rainey) and since then there have been 

countless successes in its 29-year history such as Bic Runga, Anika 

Moa, Nesian Mystik and our very own Mairehau High School 

student band Falter, who were the National winners in 2003. 

This year we had four entries with two groups and two soloists 

carrying on our proud tradition. Entrants have to write and 

perform original music. 

This year we had the group, Heck, I Don’t Know – Ella Peoples, Rachel Wilson, Maddy 

Bouma and Tammy Reynard, and soloist entrants, Rachel Nolan and Moeka Ishizawa, 

and Darrell Faamau Suaesi in a group with his friends, who competed at the Aurora 

Centre on Saturday May 27th. 

We were really proud when Darrell and his friends from Haeata were chosen to go 

forward to the Regional Final and even more so, when they were selected to go to the 

National Final on Sept 2 in Auckland. good luck to you and the group Darrell.

What causes OOS? The Department 

of Labour states: “One of the 

favourable explanations for OOS is 

that it is caused by muscles being 

held tense or tight for too long.’’ 

These conditions may be caused 

by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, 

vibrations, mechanical compression, or 

sustained or awkward positions. 

The shorter and tenser the muscle, the 

harder it pulls on the places it attaches to 

(e.g. the bone). When this happens in the 

forearm the pull at those attachments and 

tendons causes irritation and inflammation 

of those areas. This will be noticed as pain in 

the elbow and wrist. When this happens in 

the neck and shoulder area, it will be noticed 

as local pain, stiffness and sometimes 

headaches. The nerves run right through 

the muscles. Tension on the muscles causes 

pressure on the nerves. As the muscles 

shorten, the nerves running through them 

have a tendency to both shorten and slide 

less well. This causes the nerves to radiate 

pain throughout the arm.

Emma’s back! 

THAT’S right folks, Emma Palaamo has returned to 

the Richmond Club Bistro, and this time she is 

running it! 

Emma last worked at the Club when her parents 

Bev and Steve Palaamo were running the Bistro and 

Restaurant pre-EQ. 

Unsure of what she wanted to do when she left 

school Emma decided to attend university where she 

earned a degree in English and Psychology. 

“I’ve wondered if I’d ever use my degree, but I love 

being in the kitchen. Cooking’s in my blood. It’s what 

I’m used to,” said Emma. 

Largely trained by her father, Emma said she was 

nervous when she was initially offered running the 

Bistro. 

“My parents have such a good reputation and I don’t 

want to let Dad down. The reaction to my menu and 

cooking has been great, and regular members are very 

happy to see me back.” 

With her first few weeks spent gauging what diners 

wanted, Emma is confident she has streamlined the 

menu to provide a selection to satisfy everyone. 

“I’ve listened to what they want and have taken 

heed. by bringing back the old with new. I’m also 

doing blackboard specials and two course specials, as 

well as introducing a Kids’ menu.” 

The Club Bistro is open for LUNCH Tuesday to 

Sunday (Brunch), for DINNER Wednesday to Sunday 

and is also available for private functions.

Community. 

Last year Linwood 

College and a 

group based on the East Christchurch 

community centres undertook a major 

community consultation about our 

school. This opportunity to be involved 

in the vision for the redevelopment of 

Linwood College was whole-heartedly 

embraced by the community. Over 

1300 people responded with many of 

these responses being face-to-face 

conversations. 

A variety of themes arose out of these 

conversations with the dominant being 

that: 

Linwood College should nurture 

personal excellence by providing 

varied opportunities to meet 

individual needs. The school should 

foster a ‘love to learn’ culture that 

creates high levels of achievement 

and success in ways that are 

accessible for all. 

This theme drives everything that we 

do and at present it is being applied to 

how our students select their senior 

subjects. Our own LC experience, that 

of our families and whãnau and formal 

research, all agree that for many 

teenagers the process of selecting 

subjects becomes more personally 

important and meaningful when part 

of considering wider career pathways. 

This is why LC now calls our Years 7-10 

curriculum the ‘Learning Pathway’ and 

Years 11-13 the ‘Career Pathway’. 

Yes, education is full of jargon but in this 

case, there actually are some helpful 

phrases that enhance understanding. 

Two such terms are Backward 

Mapping and UBD, Understanding 

by Design. A useful overall summary 

sentence is, “Start with the end in mind 

and work backwards.” To support this 

way of thinking we have redesigned 

the Career Pathways booklet and 

subsequent processes to link school 

subject choices with pathwayunderstanding. 

It is about positioning 

teenagers to be future-focussed: 

thinking ahead, playing to their 

strengths and accepting challenges. 

Ngã mihi nui to our community as the 

positive activity of the year continues. I 

am always keen to meet people if any 

member of the community wishes to 

talk to me about anything. My door is 

open.

Emerging Leaders 

Last month the Samoan National Fagasa speech 

competition was held in Woolston at the EFKS 

church. Congratulations to Vai Mariner - 1st equal 

for Year 13, Titi Ma Sun - 4th for Year 13 and Gloria 

Su'a - 2nd for Year 11. This was an outstanding 

result especially considering that they were up 

against students from the Auckland and Wellington 

regions!

This year in ‘Gateway’ Linwood College students have work experience in a wide 

range of industries and have been gaining some valuable skills.

Advanced Customer Services, achieved through the 

Gateway programme. 

As the newly appointed Performing 

Arts teacher, when I first came to 

Linwood College I was quick to see 

the wonderful talent that our school 

had and sought a musical which our 

students and families would enjoy. 

Settling on a Maverick Musical called, 

‘Wolfstock’ (written by Mary McMahan 

with music by Donald Woodward), 

this was the perfect challenge for our 

students. 

With time and practice the students 

thrived in this environment and the 

end product was exciting, funny and 

dynamic. I am exceptionally proud of 

my students and the effort that they put 

in. To all the parents who transported, 

waited, got up super early and gathered 

costumes - thank you so much! We 

could not have done this without your 

support. I can't wait for the next one.

In early July, selected students 

were given the opportunity 

to attend the annual Christ’s 

College Emerging Leaders’ 

Conference, along with 

representatives from many 

Canterbury schools. At this 

conference many inspirational 

speakers told their own 

unique stories and passed 

on quintessential advice for 

Communities of Learning 

aspiring young leaders. 

Callum Lawson, said that the 

day was an inspiration. His 

favourite message was from 

the speaker Joel Bouzaid, that 

leadership is something that 

you can own, something that 

you can bend and mould to suit 

your traits and strengths, so 

that you can be the leader you 

hope to be.

of Bamford, Bromley, Linwood Avenue, Linwood College, Linwood North, 

Tamariki and Te Waka Unua. The other is Aupaki: Heathcote Valley, Linwood 

College, Mount Pleasant, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Redcliffs and Sumner. 

We are very excited about the rich opportunities that lay ahead for our tamariki 

within these learning communities or kãhui ako from early childhood through to 

secondary school and beyond for many years to come.
