Opposition to multi-unit
housing development mounts
• By Noah Graham
RESIDENTS OF a Somerfield
street are joining together to stop
a multi-unit development from
going ahead, saying it will ruin
their neighbourhood.
More than 20 residents say
Multay Developments Ltd’s plans
to build four, two-storey townhouse
units on 23 Studholme St
will ruin their street’s familyorientated
appeal.
Residents have collected about
300 signatures for their petition
to oppose the development and
shared their concerns at the
Somerfield Residents’ Association
meeting earlier this month.
Retain Somerfield’s Character
group member Marty Flanagan
said the development of multiunit
housing would ruin the
neighbourhood.
“We want to keep Somerfield
as a family-friendly area and to
have houses with space for kids
to play and have a certain degree
of privacy.
“The proposed development is
so at odds with everything else
in the street and it will dominate
the streetscape.”
Mr Flanagan said the group
will be working through
their options to stop
Multay Development’s
plans.
The company has
applied for resource
consent from city council
and includes three, noncompliance
issues.
Somerfield Residents Association
chairwoman Julie Tobell
said the imminent concern was
Melanie Coker
23 Studholme St, but she was
concerned intensive development
will spread exponentially
in Somerfield.
She said she was
worried people living
in family-focused neighbourhoods
did not fully
understand the Residential
Suburban Density
Transition zoning which
allows for more intensive
development.
An agent for Multay Developments
said at this stage they did
not want to comment.
Spreydon Cashmere Community
Board deputy chairwoman
Melanie Coker said the board is
supporting the residents who are
concerned.
City council will decide next
month whether Multay Developments
will be granted consent.
Running for a good cause
ST MARK’S School house leaders
are organising a fun run to raise
money for three charities.
Six year 8 pupils (Lilly Okey,
Brieanna Cox, Julia Glassey, Bella
Edwards, Sophia Tiso and Millie
Trustum) have all used their own
initiative to help fundraise money
for Cholmondeley Children’s
Centre, Ronald McDonald House
and KidsCan.
St Mark’s School deputy
principal Adrian Rennie said the
pupils had been in contact with the
charities and came up with the idea
themselves.
“It’s their brain child and they
have done a really good job”
He said pupils will dress in
house colours which will represent
one of the three charities and will
compete in an obstacle course held
at the school grounds.
Mr Rennie said the house leaders
asked their friends and family to
donate and hope to raise between
$100-200 per charity.
The event will be held on April 7.
SOMERFIELD residents are
opposing a multi-unit development
for 23 Studholme St saying it will
negatively impact the community
(page 1).
With infrastructure in place,
multi-unit developments can work.
Although I agree multiple-unit
buildings on one block of land
detracts from the family-focused
appeal they once held, they can
also help those who really need it.
As someone who needed a place
close to work for a reasonable price,
a room in a multi-unit building
block was the perfect place for me.
However, my view would be
completely different if I owned
a car. A quick stroll down my
street and it is obvious there is not
enough space for the number of
vehicles trying to cram themselves
against the curb.
With more multi-unit developments
in the area it is no wonder
residents feel uneasy about new
developments. – Noah Graham
Fear of sediment entering river
• By Noah Graham
CITY COUNCIL need to act
quickly to stop sediment runoff
damaging the Heathcote
River and nearby streams, local
groups say.
Last month’s Port Hills
fire left the hillsides bare
and with a lack of vegetation
with the potential
for sediment run-off to
cause irreparable damage,
Cashmere Stream
Care Group chairperson Ken
Rouse said.
Mr Rouse said it is only a
matter of time before there is a
heavy rain storm in Christchurch
which could cause sediment
to wash off the hillside.
He said city council need to
act fast and allocate enough
money to do the job properly
if they are to limit
the amount of damage to
waterways.
Spreydon-Cashmere
community board member
and Opawaho Heathcote
River Network co-chairwoman
Helene Mautner
(left) said she was “very concerned”
by the sediment issue.
She said an increase of ash and
soil in the Heathcote River could
Tags cleaned off Woolston
monument’s protective panels
Graffiti has been cleaned from
the protective panelling on the
Woolston Borough Monument on
Wednesday after the city council
was informed last Monday by
Southern View it had been tagged.
About $23,000 was spent to install
the panels which were tagged
within three weeks of being put in
place. The panels were cleaned
with a solvent and its anti-graffiti
film did not need to be replaced.
The work cost $60 for the solvent
plus four hours of labour.
have devastating effects on the
aquatic life.
Dr Mautner said the sediment
blocks sunlight to the plants
which will result in a knock-on
effect that will impact the whole
ecosystem.
She said revegetation needs to
start as soon as possible.
Environment Canterbury
service delivery senior manager
Brett Aldridge said sediment is
detrimental to the health of the
waterways as it smothers the
aquatic life.
He said ECan are working
with city council to provide
landowners with good information
on erosion and sediment
control, as well as biodiversity
expertise.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said
city council staff are looking at
options immediately to reduce
the risk and include creating silt
traps by felling damaged trees,
using straw bales as barriers to
stop silt finding its way to waterways,
as well as reseeding and
initial replanting of hillsides.
SCHOOL BUILDING
Beckenham School is expecting
the construction work on their
building to be finished in time
for the 2018 school year. The
original completion date was May
2018, but was brought forward to
January after the building work
was progressing significantly
faster than expected, principal
Sandy Hastings said.
MOTOR-CYCLE IMPOUNDED
Gizmo’s Adventure
Gizmo, an 11 year old Ginger tabby
from Sydney, presented to Catherine
one morning with an acute left
hindleg lameness. He wasn’t placing
any weight on the leg and seemed
in a lot of pain. Catherine suspected
a femoral fracture due to his leg
swinging and the obvious angulation
mid femur. No other injuries were
seen. He had normal neurological
function. All his nails were scuffed and
worn. Most often we see these injuries
with road traffic accidents. Blood work
the previous week was great.
Catherine performed a digital xray to
confirm her suspicions and Gizmo was
immediately placed on intravenous
fluids with pain relief ( a fentanyl CRI)
and started on penicillin. A transverse
femoral fracture located proximal third
femur was diagnosed. His diaphragm
was intact, as was his bladder and all
his other abdominal organs looked
fine. Surgery to repair the fracture or
amputation were the only options
available. This fracture couldn’t be
left to just heal on its own. The clients
were informed of the options – a
referral to a specialist orthopaedic
surgeon to plate the femur or IM
pinning and cerclage wire performed
at McMaster & Heap Vet practice.
We repeated blood work to make
sure Gizmo was still in good health to
sustain an anaesthetic. The IM pinning
option was adopted. His ongoing
arthritic issues would have made
losing a hindleg difficult for him to
cope with, especially at 11 years old.
Dr Michele McMaster performed the
surgery within 24 hours of Gizmo
being admitted. It is important
with this type of injury to get those
bone ends realigned as soon as
possible. The anaesthetic and surgery
went without a hitch. Gizmo was
connected to our Cardell monitoring
machine. The nurses can record his
heart rate, blood pressure, breathing
rate, body core temperature and
oxygen saturation every 5 minutes
during his anaesthetic. All his vital
signs were excellent. I placed a
large intramedullary pin through
the medullary cavity of his femur to
reduce the fracture and align the
ends of the femur.
A single cerclage
wire was also placed
to create as much
stability as possible.
Post operative xrays
confirmed perfect
placement. Now the
rest is up to Gizmo.
Gizmo was discharged
3 days later able to stand and get
into his dirt tray, eating up a storm
and with the surgical site looking
great. He was starting to place the
paw when he left here. He will be in a
cage for 4-6 weeks to allow as much
immobility as possible for fracture
healing. I will remove the pin in about
6-8 weeks once the fracture site has
calloused and healed. Gizmo will be
back weekly for us to check on his
progress. A great outcome all around.
Housing developments changing Addington
Addington
Manuka Cottage
community
development
worker Cherylan
Davies talks
about where
Addington’s housing
development is heading
and the issues that come
with the changes
The changing face of
Addington has raised some
questions among residents and
community groups.
Some of the changes have been
considered progress, while others
have created angst among a great
many residents who have lived in
Addington for years.
The concern is driven by the
loss of Addington’s historic
character and the picturesque
peacefulness that it fashioned.
As an older suburb, Addington’s
identity has a rich tapestry
CHANGE: Addington’s Poulson St is one of several streets in the area to experience a change in
the type of housing developments.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
of stories, historic buildings,
working class cottages, and
quirky, narrow, tree-lined streets,
with chirping native birds that
enhance the park-like peaceful
setting residents have enjoyed
since the suburb’s establishment.
A community that works
well is one where residents
are invested in their local
neighbourhood.
This occurs by being involved
in local issues, joining local
residents’ associations, meeting
the people in your street, having
spaces for locals to enjoy events,
walking the dog, picnics and
enjoying the company of others,
mixed with a tolerance of each
other.
It’s a community where people
talk to one another freely.
Infill housing encourages a
high transient rental population
that often causes its own social
problems.
Short-term tenants are less
likely to be involved in the area
and neighbours are less likely
to invest in getting to know the
people next door.
The development of housing is
important.
While L3 zoning may answer
the infrastructure pressures, if a
good plan for the suburb is not
put in place by the community
and the city planners, then it
comes at the cost of the loss of a
sense of belonging, identity and
community well-being.
A community that has a good
balance of standalone houses,
mixed with aesthetically pleasing
apartment complexes, access
to purposeful green spaces
and community facilities is a
fortunate suburb indeed.
We said
Six years after the
Sydenham Heritage
Church was demolished
following the February
2011 earthquake, rubble
still remains on the former
church’s grounds
artistic.
Jake Ranginui – Graffiti is
art, this is tagging and ugly.
Anne Beard – Install a
security camera inside the box.
So we can all see who these
talented artists are.
You said
Alice Geary – Same with
the Cathedral so what’s the
difference? Both need to be gone
. . . use some of the rubble and
combine it into the new building.
Marie Manson – This
building I believe should never
have been demolished in the first
place.
Wendy Anne Cornish –
About time. A disgrace and I
don’t know why the clearing of
this eyesore pile of rubble hasn’t
been enforced.
We said
Anti-graffiti panels
installed on the Woolston
Borough Monument to
counter its long-running
Tane Apanui
Campaigner for commuter
Tane Apanui talks to Noah Graham about his
campaign to gain support for a railway system that
would run from North Canterbury through Papanui
and into the city
How has It been trying to
organise the Dash Rail project?
I’m a one-man band, so it’s
been very difficult trying to
organise it. It’s been more than
two years of work getting it
done. The last city council were
a bit more difficult to work with,
whereas the new city council is a
lot better to work with so that’s
been good. I think we’ve elected
the right people.
Why is having a community
railway system in Christchurch
important?
We Kiwis, we’re addicted to
cars. When I was in Australia,
I bought myself a nice Holden
Commodore but then I took
the train and I thought, wow,
this is stress-free. You just jump
on the train. One of the telling
numbers for me that showed
we need it was the suicide rate
in Christchurch has doubled
since the quakes. So I thought
about the amount of stress it
takes to break someone and if
we are adding an extra 10 hours
a week of stress because of the
morning commute, when we
could be sitting on a train using
wi-fi just relaxing before work, I
think it would go a long way to
helping the mindset of the city.
We’re fairly tense at the moment
and we have been for a couple
of years. So putting in a railway
that needs to be done anyway,
is going to help alleviate those
daily stresses.
What are some of the challenges
you have faced while
trying to get this system under
way?
One of the biggest obstructions
I’ve faced when it comes
to putting in rail is people don’t
think it will succeed. But when
you look at modelling for transport,
the No 1 concern is travel
time. The train is twice as fast as
a bus and 50 per cent faster than
a car. So when people wonder
why the buses are failing, it’s because
they are too slow. Whereas
if they were to link up with a
main system – this is where
the rail should be a centrepiece
– your whole public transport
system would function better.
At the moment, the buses are
floundering all over the city.
What was it like being a
Hornby Ward candidate last
year and why did you do it?
It was difficult as well. Constituents
base a lot of their trust
on whether they have met you or
not, regardless of what you are
actually like. I would go doorknocking
and people would say
they have already made up their
mind. That was hard. I’m a lucky
person. No-one can achieve anything
without the community
around them. You can’t be successful
without people lifting you
up or putting you in a position to
be successful. I suppose growing
up in a poverty-stricken, broken
actually helped us get there.
train system a one-man band
You’ve had a variety of jobs,
including flying a plane, what
was that like?
It’s been a lot of work. I did
eventually find a job when I was
in Australia flying a 1942 de
Havilland tiger moth and it was
cold and miserable because of
the open cockpit. The first five
minutes you are like, wow, and
then it hits you and you’re like,
“you know, this open cockpit
thing is not awesome.” I’ve done
a wee bit of flying, but I didn’t do
a lot in that job, it just didn’t pay
enough. I’ve done more excavator
and operator work I suppose
in scrap steel yards.
Could you tell me a bit about
your family?
We’re all over the place. We’re
not what you’d call a tight family.
I’ve got a sister who is awesome.
She is the coolest sister in
the world. She lived in Christchurch
recently and is the chief
finance officer of CerebralFix.
She bought a house in Westport
and is working in the epic centre
over there and still working for
CerebralFix.
You also represented Canterbury
in under-18 hockey, what
was that like?
I was born and raised in
Greymouth so getting into a
TRAIN: Tane Apanui is trying to gain support for a community railway system that would run from
North Canterbury through Papanui and into the city.
Canterbury side, especially for
hockey, was a big deal. I think
I was one of the first kids ever
from the West Coast to make
the Canterbury side. Then I went
on to play for the Canterbury
under-21s in 2000. We won
both of those tournaments, the
under-18 and the under-21s.
Then, a few years later, I went on
to coach the under-21s and we
won both of those tournaments
in 2004 and 2005 – back-to-back
national tournaments. Playing
for Canterbury was awesome,
and was definitely one of the
highlights of my career.
What was coaching like compared
to playing?
Stressful. Coaching is stressful.
When you’re playing, it’s a
lot more fun. Coaching takes
years off of your life expectancy.
You do meet some cool people
“Your face is unique.
OPEN COCKPIT: Tane
Apanui used to fly a 1942 de
Havilland tiger moth when he
worked in Australia.
though.
You’ve also worked with deaf
and blind communities in Australia
and New Zealand, how
did you get into that?
I was dating a sign language
interpreter over in Australia, so
I took up sign language. I did a
couple of courses over there and,
whenever I could help out with
the deaf community, I did. I did
a camp where you deal with people
who are both deaf and blind.
If you’ve not seen how deaf and
blind people interact, it’s incredible.
They’re quick and articulate
and if they don’t like you, they let
you know really quick. They’re
incredible people.
If you had spare time, what
would you do?
If I had time to play hockey, I’d
play hockey. I’d go to the gym or
I would play World Of Warcraft.
Actually, the last time I logged
on was probably a month and
a half ago because I’ve been
so flat out organising the train
network.
Cashmere teen
takes triathlon title
• By Andrew King
SOLA KUWASAKI’S hard work
on his swimming during the
winter paid off as he won his age
group at the Canterbury secondary
schools triathlon championships
on Tuesday at Scarborough.
The Cashmere High School student’s
time of 33min 23.6sec saw
him finish fourth overall and top
of the under-16 men’s individual
group.
The 16-year-old from Hillsborough
achieved the win in spite of
having a cold in the lead up to the
race.
“I was feeling pretty good before
the race. I was relaxed even though
I had the cold in the lead up,”
Kuwasaki said.
He finished up behind Saxon
Morgan, 31min 57.6sec, Zachary
Taylor, 32min 47.6sec and William
Taylor, 33min 11.4sec.
“I was slightly disappointed I
finished behind (William Taylor)
as he is a bit younger, but he is very
good,” he said.
His swimming, he said, was
a weak spot in his arsenal, and
he had worked hard to make it a
strength of his.
“I have been doing more swimming
than running or biking
lately,” he said.
When asked if it would be something
he would like to pursue as a
career, he said he would rather just
enjoy it for as long as possible.
“I haven’t really thought about
GOOD EFFORT: Sola
Kuwasaki’s time of 33min
23.6sec saw him finish fourth
overall and top of the under-16
men’s individual group.
it, but I really love the sense of
achievement,” he said.
He trains with a lot of the guys
he competes against and said that
was “quite nice.”
Looking ahead to the New
Zealand schools triathlon national
championships on Thursday in
Wanganui, he said he will have to
train like mad to compete with
some of the top school-aged athletes
in the country.
“Some of their times are pretty
intimidating. But I’m keen to give
it a good whack,” he said.
YOUTHTOWN’S inaugural
super 10 competition brought
schools together on Friday for
futsal, basketball and ripper
rugby and the opportunity for
students to give a different sport
a go.
Woolston’s Te Waka Unua
School were the overall winners
on the day with their skills
across the three sports, while
Cashmere Primary School won
the fair play award.
The fair play award was
for the team best displaying
Youthtown’s values of belonging,
mastery, generosity and
independence.
Other schools involved included
Rowley Ave, Casebrook
Intermediate, Heaton Normal
Intermediate, Chisnallwood
Intermediate, Cathedral College
and Parkview.
Programme co-ordinator Iosua
Tauti said the tournament is
not your “normal” competition.
“These are the kids that don’t
get the opportunity to play for
their school and love sport but
might not be good enough to be
picked in these sorts of teams,”
he said.
He said this gives them the
opportunity to have a go.
“It went really well, all the
students that participated are
all looking forward to the next
tournament, and it was a beautiful
day to be outside and have
fun with the students,” he said.
Hello
Full range of services at
popular local salon
Since opening in September
last year, the Cashmere Road
hair salon 50 Shades of Fabulous
has been proving popular with a
growing clientele and the business
is going very well, says owner
Rebecca Wilson.
The salon’s stylists offer a full
range of services including cutting,
colouring, blow waves, foils and
hair-ups, catering for all ages and
style preferences.
They keep up to date with all
the latest hair care and styling
products from L’Oreal, and have
just introduced a brand-new
product, Smartbond, to the salon.
“We offer this for clients who are
having their hair coloured,” says
Rebecca.
“It works within the hair shaft
to strengthen the hair and prevent
damage while the hair is being
coloured.”
The treatment is optional, and
costs $25 per treatment. Clients
can also purchase Smartbond
conditioner to take home for
ongoing treatment.
50 Shades of Fabulous also has
the special L’Oreal offer – $83 for
a 750ml Vitamino shampoo and
750ml conditioner – a saving of
over 50 per cent.
“They have great deals like this
every six months,” Rebecca says,
“and they are only available while
stocks last.”
With its warm, friendly
environment, 50 Shades of
Fabulous has become a popular
spot with locals, and during
the recent Port Hills fires many
gathered around the salon while
they were out of their homes.
During the ordeal the salon was
visited by TVNZ journalist Toni
Street, who not only reported
live for the programme Seven
Sharp, but also spent time
speaking to the staff and
clients, three of whom had been
evacuated from their homes.
“She was just lovely,” Rebecca
says.
Hello
Classic fashion the focus at
this Halswell store
For Rosalie Maxwell, owner/
operator of Maxwells Fashion in
Halswell, offering her customers
quality fashion garments in classic
styles is the key feature to her
business.
While she does stock some highend
fashion, the main focus is on
quality fabrics and construction in
a mid-price range.
“I’m not limited to following the
latest fashion trends and colours. I
cater for a more mature client base,
who want more long-lasting styles,”
Rosalie says.
The friendly, relaxed atmosphere
of Maxwells Fashion means there
is no sales pressure, but at the
same time Rosalie is happy to offer
guidance to her customers when
they are trying on garments.
“I can also put together a whole
outfit for a customer if they want to
just relax in the fitting room.”
Knitwear is one of the key
features of the store, including a
wide selection of merino in lovely
shades and a range of prices, so
with the cooler weather arriving
these are well worth checking out.
Customers can take items home
on appro, or put them on layby to
avoid missing out, Rosalie says.
She stocks New Zealand-made
garments where possible, though
there are also imported labels on
the racks. Brands include the very
popular Black Pepper, as well as
Optimum, Royal Merino, Slade,
Equus, Yvonne Black and Piccadilly.
“Being an independent retailer
I can source my own styles so the
stock in my shop is more individual,
and I only carry a few of each style.
I can also track down specific items
for a customer.”
As well, Maxwells Fashion
caters for a wide range of sizes,
starting from eight and ranging
up to 22 and 24 in selected
styles.
To complement the garments,
there is a small range of
accessories.
With 10 years in the fashion
business, Rosalie understands
what her customers look for,
and stocks Maxwells Fashion
accordingly. She looks forward
to assisting you find the right
classic, quality garments for the
autumn and winter season.
Maxwells Fashion is located at
17 Lillian Street, Halswell – just
off Halswell Road, look for the
dairy with the ice-cream cone on
the corner, and see new arrivals on
Fendalton Dental Surgery,
looking after your dental needs
Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the Idris
& Glandovey Roads corner has been
looking after the dental needs of their local
community as well as the wider Christchurch
area since 2011. It is operated by Dr Keith
Chiang and his highly experienced team who
can perform a variety of complex procedures
ranging from General & Cosmetic Family
Dentistry including Dentures upto more
complex work like Wisdom teeth surgery,
Implants and Crowns.
Dentists Keith Chiang and Zohnia
McNeill and Dental Hygienist Amy Lee
offer a complete range of dental and oral
care services, all in a very calm and relaxed
environment. “We listen carefully to what
our patients tell us so we can address each of
their dental problems and help them achieve
good oral health,” says Keith.
A major component of Keith’s work is
under IV sedation, which is available for
people that are very nervous about visiting
the dentist. He has performed more than
2000 Intravenous sedation procedures and
the clinic is equipped with the latest advanced
equipment for sedation monitoring. He has
a special interest in Oral Surgery, Implants
and Intra venous sedation.
For people with damaged or missing teeth,
Zohnia will discuss with them the options
of having crowns, permanent implants or
dentures fitted, all of which have the added
advantage of helping clients regain their
functional bite as well as improve their
smile and overall confidence. She
has a special interest in Cosmetic
dentistry, Root Canals and Geriatric
dentistry. Her calm approach and
special individual attention to detail
has helped deal with most common
dental issues in her patients.
Hygienist Amy specialises in
the overall maintenance of healthy
teeth and gums. She educates her
clients on how to look after their
oral health, which if not taken care
of can have detrimental effects
on their overall health. The gum
Dr Keith Chiang,
Dentist
disease, Gingivitis is one of the main reasons
why people lose their teeth, the dentists
point out, while research also indicates that
gum disease in pregnant women can mean
a higher chance of premature birth and low
birth weight.
Dry mouth or reduced salivary flow,
which is caused by certain medications that
people take can also lead to gum problems
and tooth decay. By visiting the hygienist
regularly, gum problems can be prevented,
and consequently tooth decay as well as
more serious health issues can be avoided.
Fendalton Dental Surgery will soon add to
its suite of advanced dental equipment with
Dr Zohnia McNeil,
Dentist
Amy Lee,
Dental Hygienist
a state-ofthe-art
3D CT scanner, which will be used
to scan jaws, enabling the dentists to give a
better diagnosis of clients’ dental problems.
Keith, Zohnia and Amy invite new
patients to visit their clinic and experience
Expert Care and of being one of their valued
patients, and without having to pay high
fees.
Easily accessible, highly visible and
with plenty of on-site parking, Fendalton
