Items from the Sydenham
Heritage Church have been
recovered as work continues
to remove the rubble that has
plagued the site for so long.

Parts of pews and a metal
pole that held up the old church
mezzanine floor have been
recovered from the rubble on
the corner of Brougham and
Colombo Sts.
Work on clearing the
site started last month
after more than six years
after the church was
controversially demolished
due to the February 2011
earthquake.
Sydenham Heritage Church
Trust chairwoman Dorothy
Haywood said it took the
contractors six days to remove
one sixth of the rubble but
did not want to give an
estimated time frame of
when the whole site would
be cleared.
Mrs Haywood (left) said
the cost of removing the
rubble had met budget and was
going as expected, however, she
would not say how much it had
cost.
She was really happy with
the progress, particularly with
some parts of the church being
salvageable.
She said the stone from the
church will also be kept and will
be used for the planned community
facility which will be built
on the old church site.
Work on removing rubble
from the site had been delayed
due to a wait on the church’s
insurance payout.

‘STARTLE’ BURGLAR
Police were called to a
Worsleys Rd property after
the residents woke to find
someone breaking into their
home at 4am on Wednesday.
A police spokeswoman said
the homeowners startled the
burglar who fled from the
scene. She said police were not
able to arrest the offender and a
wallet was taken.
MAN PUNCHES
OWN FENCE
Police were called to a Spreydon
residence on Wednesday
afternoon after it was reported
a man was punching a fence.
A spokeswoman said the
police spoke to the man and
discovered it was his own fence
he was punching, after he had a
disagreement with a friend.
COMMUNITY CENTRE
DESIGNS APPROVED
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
has approved the final concept
designs for the Woolston
Community Centre. The centre
will feature a mixture of timber
and brick and contractors
are expected to be on site in
late 2017 with the earliest
completion date of mid 2018.
