Hornby business group
gains momentum
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A NEW Hornby business
networking group is gaining
momentum.
The business group was set up
late last year by ANZ Hornby
manager Wendy Varney and
Harcourts Hornby branch manager
Hannah McGowan.
“When I did research, I found
there wasn’t really anything up
and running,” Ms McGowan said.
She approached Ms Varney
who got on board before the
group slowly started growing.
“Hornby is growing so much
. . . it is a huge industrial and
commercial hub in the city. We
thought it would be good getting
people together to talk,” Ms
Varney said.
The aim behind the group is
to get businesses together as well
as supporting charities including
the Women’s Refuge New
Zealand.
“We have a staff donation
where we donate money to
charity . . . we were able to award
Future Youth with $10,000 this
year to get more kids to go on
the development programme,”
While the suburb does not
have a Hornby residents’ association,
Ms Varney said it is
important to know what is happening
in the community.
“We invited Mike Mora into it
because we think it is important
to know what is going on in
Hornby,” she said.
Mr Mora said the Riccarton-
Wigram Community Board
supports the development of the
group.
Ms McGowan said the group
has been beneficial for finding
like-minded people.
“I think as business owners
and managers we feel we are
quite isolated. So it is really important
you have people you can
go balance ideas off.”
The next meeting will be a
mid-winter Christmas function
next month. To get involved
