From bookworms to reluctant readers, the Original Children’s
Bookshop caters for all.
Finding a genuine, specialist bookshop
nowadays is a true joy, and Christchurch is
privileged to have the Original Children’s
Bookshop, still locally owned and still
going strong after 40 years in the city.
now located at 227 Blenheim Road, the
store is a bright, welcoming, airy
space which caters for lovers of
children’s books and games of all
ages. it is designed to be ‘kidfriendly’,
with cosy seating areas
so they can try out books before
they spend their pocket money,
and regular activities such as
book-signings by authors and
story-telling sessions.
The team who work there are experts;
all have worked as teachers or librarians
and they share the same love of children’s
literature. Owner/Manager Mary Sangster
says that “all the staff are passionate about
children’s books and about placing the
right book into a child’s hands.” They are
available to offer advice and suggestions,
whether the book is for a baby or a
choosy teenager. There are heaps of board
books and picture books for their very
youngest customers, and a wide range
of chapter books, activity books and
poetry for middle readers. Whether
their customers love fairy stories,
funny stories or action, they can
recommend books that they are
sure to love. The ever-growing
Young adult market is also well
catered for, including books from
all genres and from around the
world. They know that classic
books never go out of style, and
stock old favourites that parents and
grandparents will remember from their
childhood, but they are also an up-to-theminute
store with the latest popular trends
on their shelves, too.
it doesn’t stop at traditional books. They
sell audio books, family-friendly games
and a range of educational activities, and
they run an e-commerce website to make it
easier find and purchase to e-books. They
cater for all reading styles, so that children
who are sight-impaired, are reluctant
readers or who have reading difficulties
can still enjoy the experience of reading,
and their expertise means that teachers
and families can turn to them for advice on
addressing these concerns.
Calling in to browse their shelves is
an experience in itself, but sometimes
there just isn’t room to stock all the books
their customers might want. instead they
provide a free special order service. if a
book is in print and in English, they will
do all they can to source it and order it in
for you.
They are open Monday to Friday 9am
to 5pm and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
