SCHOOL<br />
CELEBRATING YOUTH DAY: On Thursday morning Patrick Hansen, Ben Topham, Earl Baua,<br />
Luke Payne, Ben O’Connell, Joseph Spijkerman and Francis Verbo, along with teachers Mr<br />
Newton and Mr Kennedy made a trip to Villa Maria College. The students then returned on<br />
foot with the Youth Day Cross carrying a large crucifix down Yaldhurst Rd along with students<br />
from Villa Maria College. The cross is part of the World Youth Day festival. The festival,<br />
initiated under Pope John Paul II, is a celebration of Catholic youth and leadership.<br />
Healthy environment earns award<br />
AN EARLY learning centre in<br />
Halswell has joined the ranks<br />
as one of the heart-healthiest<br />
centres in the country after<br />
achieving an award from the<br />
Heart Foundation.<br />
Edukids Halswell has<br />
been the recipient of the Pa-<br />
Harakeke-gold star (flourishing)<br />
award.<br />
The award was presented to<br />
the centre last Friday by Heart<br />
Foundation health promotion<br />
co-ordinator Bek Parry.<br />
To earn this award, an early<br />
learning centre must have created<br />
a healthy environment and<br />
engaged the wider whanau and<br />
community in healthy eating<br />
and physical activity.<br />
The centre first signed up for<br />
the Heart Foundation’s Healthy<br />
Heart award in 2014; initially<br />
achieving the Rito award.<br />
The Heart Foundation’s<br />
Healthy Heart Award programme<br />
is partially funded<br />
by the Ministry of Health and<br />
helps early learning services<br />
create environments promoting<br />
healthy eating and physical<br />
activity to under-fives and their<br />
families.<br />
There are more than 4000<br />

early learning services in New<br />
Zealand, with about 10 per<br />
cent of them holding a Healthy<br />
Heart Award, about 150 hold<br />
the prestigious Pā-Harakeke’<br />
level.<br />

are proud to be receiving the<br />
award.<br />
“We applied for the healthy<br />
heart award because it provided<br />
us with up-to-date and ongoing<br />
information for parents, as well<br />
as giving us a sound platform<br />

The Heart Foundation’s<br />
healthy heart award provides<br />
early learning service staff<br />
with a range of information,<br />
planning tools, and curriculum<br />
guides to aid them in their<br />

A FORMER Christchurch Boys’<br />
High School student has won<br />
an award that will allow him<br />
to travel to the United States to<br />
continue his studies.<br />
Ethan Thomson won a<br />
Fulbright Science and Innovation<br />
Graduate Award which<br />
has opened a door for him to<br />
research ground motion simulation<br />
at Stanford University in<br />
California.<br />
He is currently studying towards<br />
a PhD in earthquake engineering<br />
at Canterbury University.<br />
The awards are for promising<br />
New Zealand graduate students<br />
to undertake postgraduate study<br />
or research in US institutions in<br />
fields targeted to support growth<br />
and innovation in New Zealand.<br />
Ten awards were granted this<br />
year, in partnership with the science<br />
and innovation group of the<br />
Ministry of Business, Innovation<br />
and Employment.<br />

OPEN SPACE: New York Deli, based at Bush Inn, was awarded<br />
the <strong>2016</strong> Resene Colour in Design Architectural Design Award<br />
last week. The ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards<br />
are held annually and this year more than 149 entries were<br />
received. The awards recognise creative and well-designed<br />
residential, commercial, alterations and multi-use projects from<br />
across New Zealand. The judge’s comments on the architecture<br />
designed by Hierarchy Architecture’s Chris Wheeler was<br />
the building was created with clever attention to detail.<br />
