Centre’s celebration
THE REPAIRED Wharenui
Recreation Centre Stadium was
re-opened to the public last
week.
The popular centre, located
next to Wharenui Swimming
Pool, was damaged in the February
2011 earthquake.
It has now been repaired and
strengthened to 100 per cent of
the New Building Standard.
Last week, Deputy Mayor
Vicki Buck officially re-opened
the centre, which now boasts
a colourful Kiwiana-themed
mural on the outside wall.
“I actually had the privilege of
opening the centre back in 1991
as Christchurch mayor, and this
in some ways is more meaningful,”
Ms Buck said.
The Kiwiana-themed mural
was painted by internationallyrenowned
Christchurch-born
street artist Dcypher (aka Guy
Ellis), who returned from the
United States in May to create
art work.
“It looks amazing, and adds
a real burst of colour that we’re
thankfully starting to see more
of around the city,” Ms Buck
said.
The re-opening of the centre
was marked with speeches, a
waiata from pupils of Wharenui
School, and a basketball game
on the revamped court.
Before its closure, the centre
was a popular location for the
public and pupils from local
schools. It was used for basketball,
exercise classes, badminton
and martial arts.

TAGGING SCAN
Hillmorton was the most tagged
suburb in western Christchurch
during the city council’s annual
graffiti scan, carried out over a
week in February. The suburb
had 22 tags recorded. Of the
other western suburbs scanned,
Halswell had 13, Riccarton West
had 7, Fendalton had 4, and
Russley had 0.
BUS LOUNGE OPENED
Last week, the Northern
Riccarton Bus Lounge opened.
The lounge on the north side of
Riccarton Rd features seating for
16 people and displays showing
real-time bus information and
approaching buses. The new bus
lounges are part of a package of
public transport changes along
Riccarton Rd.
MERIVALE PROJECT
The Stronger Christchurch
Infrastructure Rebuild Team
has launched a six-month
project in Merivale to repair a
large wastewater pipe. SCIRT
started work yesterday at the
western end of Aikmans Rd near
Elmwood Normal School. The
work will continue for about
six weeks. The western half of
Aikmans Rd will be open to oneway
going east towards Papanui
Rd.
