St Thomas old boy off to Rio
• Gordon Findlater
NATHAN FLANNERY was
holidaying with friends in Bali
when he received a text from
Rowing New Zealand chief
executive Simon Peterson telling
him they needed to talk.
A conversation over the
phone revealed that Flannery’s
dreams of competing in the Rio
de Janeiro Olympics could still
be alive after learning that the
Russian men’s quad team were
under investigation fer alleged
doping.
“I came home straightaway. I
got the first flight back to New
Zealand and we got straight
back into training,” Flannery
said.
The New Zealand quad
team missed out on automatic
qualification at the 2015 World
Rowing Championships in
Aiguebelette, France, by 0.05
seconds.
A last chance qualifying regatta
in Lucerne was the team’s
final opportunity to book a spot
in Rio. However, with just two
spots available, a third place finish
behind Canada and Russia
meant the team’s Olympic hopes
were over.
Not knowing their fate for
almost two weeks while they
waited for news on whether
the Russian crew would be
excluded from the games, the
team continued to train until an
announcement was made.
With a decision coming last
Friday, it’s now full steam ahead
to Rio.
“The plan has definitely
changed because we missed four
weeks of preparation. We have
a plan, though, to get us in the
best shape possible.
“We’ve lost a bit of fitness but
we’re confident we can get back
in form.”
Flannery grew up in Halswell,
attending Oakland Primary
School before beginning his
rowing career at St Thomas’ of
Canterbury College.
He was part of the rowing
programme from 2007-2010,
competing in single scull, double,
quad and the four.
The highlight of his time at
St Thomas’ was winning the
under-18 quad at the Maadi
Cup, the school’s first national
gold title.
Flannery then went on to
be named in the New Zealand
under-19 team to compete at the
Junior World Rowing Championships
in the Czech Republic,
finishing third in the quad.
In 2012, a stint in double
sculls saw Flannery win gold
at the World Rowing Under-23
Championships in Lithuania.
In 2013, he moved into the
men’s elite quad team, and they
won silver at the 2013 World
Rowing Cup in Sydney. Flannery
describes the quad team’s
first couple of years together as
challenging.
“2013 was pretty disastrous,
we learned a lot. 2014 was pretty
disastrous as well and we did
some more learning.”
In 2015, Flannery’s had his
most challenging year as a rower.
He suffered glandular fever in
late 2014 and was unable to get
himself into a boat for six weeks.
Not part of the quad team at
the 2015 World Rowing Championships,
Flannery was able to
get himself back into the team
this year.
School
forms
partnership
RANGI RURU Girls’ School is
teaming up with a 21-year-old
entrepreneur’s company to help
students into tertiary education.
Crimson Consulting, the company
set up by then 18-year-old
Jamie Beaton, will be sending one
of its tutors to Rangi as a full-time
“career pathway strategist”.
The young Harvard graduate’s
business was valued at $60 million
earlier this year after acquiring
numerous smaller educational
consultancies.
Mr Beaton started the company
in 2013 with his girlfriend Shandre
Kushor, also 18 at the time, and
soon attracted investment from US
billionaires.
His share of the education
consultancy is now worth $40.5
million.
Mr Beaton’s fellow Harvard
graduate Wen Qiu will be joining
the school as part of a new partnership
between the college and the
company.
Rangi Ruru principal Dr Sandra
Hastie says this collaboration
is about assisting students with
career plans and “connecting them
with information”.
