Horn makes bid for council

A KEY voice in the boycott of
the cafe at Te Hapua: Halswell
Centre will try to secure a seat
around the city council table this
election.

council ward of Halswell.
So far Ms Horn will be
standing against co-ordinator
of the Home Interaction
Programme for Parents and
Youngsters Anne Galloway and
Riccarton-Wigram Community
Board member Peter Laloli.
Debbie Mora will be running
for the board in Halswell.
Ms Horn was responsible
for creating a newsletter in
2010 and the Halswell
Community Project group in
2012 as a way to connecting the
community.
Most recently Ms Horn has
been in support of getting a skate
park into Halswell for youth and
helping to boycott the Wishbone
Cafe at the Te Hapua: Halswell
Centre.
But she said the boycott was
not her fault and the cafe had
“shot themselves in the foot”.
“I don’t think I have that much
influence. Sure, a few people
might not being buying stuff
there because of me but the bulk
of people would still go there”.
She said Wishbone had
a particular model that was
not adaptable to the
community.
Ms Horn said there is an
imbalance in the way people
can influence the community
board which she hopes to
change.
“If you are a retired,
reasonably well-educated, welloff
financially and you know
how things work then you can
be very influential with the
community board. But if you are
young and you don’t know how

things work you are going to
almost have no influence.”
Mr Laloli said running for city
council has been his intention
for a long time.
He said the other candidates
that have put their names
forward are all able.

SCIRT UPDATE
Residents of Hansons Lane, Field
Tce, Karamu St and Wallace St
in Riccarton, Ilam and Bryndwr
will have SCIRT teams working
on wastewater pipe-lining repairs
in their streets this week at night.
The work sites will be coned off
in the middle of the road or on
the footpaths. These works are
part of a project of SCIRT repairs
to the wastewater network in
these suburbs. The project is not
expected to be finished until
about October.

Riccarton-Wigram Community
Board deputy chairwoman Helen
Broughton as “chairwoman”. It
is chaired by Mike Mora. The

WORK UNDER WAY
Repairs to the earthquakedamaged
wastewater system
on Fendalton Rd, near the
intersection with Deans and
Harper Aves, is underway. Work
will start between numbers 2-4
on Fendalton Rd.
To minimise delays, in the
morning there will be two lanes
operating for southbound traffic.
