6 Tuesday July 12 2016 News Funding boost for swim classes ABOUT 1300 more children will be able to join Swimsafe classes in the next year thanks to a $40,000 funding increase. The boost was approved by city council as part of its Annual Plan for 2016/17. The money will go towards a transport subsidy for children travelling by bus to city council swimming pools to take part in the programme. It also agreed to introduce a 25 per cent discount on entry fees to centres such as Te Hapua: Halswell Centre and Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre for children of Community Services Card holders in a bid to improve access to pools. The discount on entry fees will be introduced from October 1. The child entry fee for swimming at council pools is due to go up from $3.10 to $3.50 in October however, city council staff are investigating how the cost can be kept as low as possible. Acting head of recreation and sports David Bailey said the extra funding would help make Swimsafe more accessible, particularly for students at low decile schools. Changeover for residents’ associations as long-time chairmen stand down • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HALSWELL RESIDENTS’ Association chairman Ron Fensom has retired from his role after leading the organisation through the changing landscape for 22 years. A handover of the role as chairman was held recently with member John Bennett stepping into the role as chairman. But Mr Fensom said he will still be active in the community with several projects he is involved with. Mr Fensom has spent 55 years in Halswell and has been involved in groups including the Halswell Lions Club. In his time as chairman Mr Fensom has worked for lower speed limits around the area, and getting a memorial in Wigram to remember the men who lost their lives when two planes collided in mid-air near the former RNZAF Wigram air base. Mr Fensom was awarded with a Queen Service Medal for his contribution to the community and a Civic Award in 2006. Meanwhile, the Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association needs a new chairman, after Bob Cross (right) was stood down. Mr Cross will be moving to Cust in December after living in Yaldhurst for the past 15 years. He said being 30m away from the Winstone Aggregrates, one of the quarries involved in the consent, was one of the reasons for the shift. “It was a number of reasons STEPPING DOWN: Former Halswell Resident Association chairman Ron Fensom. but basically we couldn’t continue our lifestyle . . . having a quarry on our boundary,” he said. Recently Mr Cross was awarded a community service award by the Riccarton-Wigram WESTERN NEWS Community Board.
