Global challenge for student<br />
WESTERN NEWS<br />
Hillmorton High School students were<br />
treated to a visit from New Zealand<br />
Opera. There were 25 year seven and<br />
eight students and some music students<br />
involved in the workshop. The staff of<br />
NZ Opera shared insight into the latest<br />
performance La traviata, which opens<br />
later this month.<br />
A ST Thomas of Canterbury<br />
College student has been<br />
selected as the South<br />
Island’s only representative<br />
to compete at the global<br />
enterprise challenge.<br />
Students from about 30<br />
countries will be participating.<br />
Year 13 student Tim<br />
Marshall has been chosen<br />
to represent Team New<br />
Zealand in San Francisco. He<br />
was chosen after competing<br />
along with 200 candidates at<br />
the Young Enterprise Trust<br />
event-Enterprise in Action<br />
held in Auckland last week.<br />
Principal’s PA Elmarie Els<br />
said the students had to use<br />
their business knowledge to<br />
develop solutions for challenges<br />
and present strategic<br />
business plans to a panel of<br />
judges.<br />
Tim will be representing<br />
New Zealand along with<br />
five other students from<br />
Auckland, Wellington,<br />
Manawatu and Northland.<br />
The students will spend<br />
five days in San Francisco<br />
and plan to visit some of<br />
Silicon Valley’s leading businesses<br />
including Google,<br />
Facebook, Tesla and AirBnB.<br />
They will also visit the<br />

Mrs Els said Tim is an exceptional<br />
student who is participating<br />
in the specialised<br />
social enterprise programme<br />
developed at their school.<br />
Tim has been the recipient<br />
of several national awards<br />
for his work in social enterprise.<br />
Last year, he was chief<br />
exectuive of a literacy-based<br />
software called “George”<br />
HELPING OTHERS: Tim worked with<br />
other pupils as part of the social<br />
enterprise project “George” designed<br />
to help pupils who use English as a<br />
second language.<br />

Tim also spent his summer<br />
last year in India working<br />
alongside the marginalised<br />
for eight weeks as part of the<br />
