Wow! Any interesting stories
from the trip?
One part of the Silk Road trip
that really stood out was our
stay in Arslenbob, Krygsztan. Arslenbob
survived on having the
largest walnut forest in the world,
but in winter that meant there
was 90 per cent unemployment.
A local man, Hyatt, campaigned
community based tourism and
set us up to stay in the village
with the locals and ski through
the walnut forest each day with
Hyatt who had taught himself to
ski from watching it on TV.
Wow, what a trip! And you
volunteer helping disabled
people ski?
Yes, my twin sister and I have
been quite involved in disabled
skiing. It’s really nice to see
people who are really struggling
with a disability just forget that
when they’re skiing – like they’re
just any other person. A lot of
them might use sit-skis or be
assisted in some other way, so it
really just levels the playing field.
It’s so good to see patients come
who might have quite a debilitated
quality of life restore that
through skiing.
And you’re involved in adventure
racing too?
DETERMINATION: Madeleine
Martin competing in the
Coast to Coast in February.
Yes, I just did the Coast to
Coast again this year, I came fifth
in the women’s section so I guess
that’s alright. I tried not to take it
too seriously. I’ve done it before,
the first time I did it was 10 years
ago when I completed it together
with my twin sister. We were the
first twins to complete the Coast
to Coast together actually.
And you followed that up with
the GODZone Adventure
Race?
Yes, that was soon after the
Coast to Coast, and it was a huge
mental challenge. We finished
the course in six days, which was
around mid-field, but we decided
right at the start we were going
to get some proper sleep so we
actually finished the race feeling
okay and still getting on well as a
team. We finished behind Richie
McCaw’s team by about a day I
think, but they hardly slept.
Those are some pretty intense
events, how do you fit training
around full-time work?
I don’t know, you just do it
really. It’s always hard to find
balance but I think it’s really
important to keep your hobbies
up outside of work.
So have you always lived in
Christchurch?
I was born in Christchurch, I
grew up here and studied here
before moving to Auckland for
five years to work with Fisher
& Paykel. So apart from that,
and an exchange to the United
Kingdom during my engineering
degree, yes I have always lived
here. My partner, Blair, and I
love it here. It’s great just being
able to have the lifestyle and its
conducive to fitting in the likes of
my training.
TWINS: Madeleine and Charlotte Martin.
Would you tell me a bit about
your family?
Yes, well my partner is commuting
between here and
Auckland at the moment, and we
don’t have any kids at this stage
but I’ve got enough little nieces
– three of them – to keep me
busy [laughing]. I’m also one of
five children. Charlotte and I are
the second-eldest in our family.
They’re all thinking about doing
the Coast to Coast next year actually,
I might just support-crew
for once though [laughing].
You say you love Christchurch,
so what are your favourite
places to go here?
My partner and I have a dinner
club we like to go to with friends,
where we try new places as they
pop up around the city. The last
one we went to was The Laboratory
in Lincoln, and I always like
to go back to The Monday Room
as I really enjoy the food there.
What would you say to people
wanting to follow their passions?
I just take every opportunity
I’m given really. They’re all challenges
but I enjoy it.
