Quake experiences needed
• By Emma-Jane McLennan
QUAKE claimants’ experiences
are being surveyed for a
comprehensive report, to help
insurers better respond to future
disasters.
The survey is the only independent
one being done and it is
essential research, Massey University
school
of economics
and finance
senior lecturer
Michael
Naylor (left)
said.
“We’ve had
interest from
all around the
world, with people asking what
we’ve learnt. Future generations
are going to want to learn from
our experiences as well. This is
important.”
The university is currently
compiling the data and calling
for Cantabrians to complete its
survey on quake claim experiences,
Dr Naylor said.
“We’ve already got more than
1000 responses, but we’d like
5000, 10,000 . . . the next major
disaster could well be Christchurch
and we want best practice
to be in place.”
DAMAGE: Liquefaction in Bexley after the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
The data collected from the
survey will be compiled into a
comprehensive report, and given
to the likes of quake insurers
and EQC.
While there has been a lot of
responses already, the university
needs a more diverse cross-section
of homeowners to respond,
Dr Naylor said.
“We haven’t got many from
the east side commenting,
mainly because most of them
were renters. We’re also after
commercial claims, a real wide
range of people.”
Dr Naylor also said that it is
often the “angry” claimants that
complete the survey.
“The only ones you hear about
in the media are negative, and
the ones coming to us are
negative. But we’re also aware
that a number of people have
had good experiences.”
The bus, carrying a tour
it from a ravine below.
Thirteen of the bus passengers
