Burnside inventors taste
success at Bright Sparks

TWO BURNSIDE High School
students have succeeded at the
ASB Bright Sparks awards.
Year 11 student Felix Backhouse
came second in the Bright
Sparks engineering
category for his invention
Birds iView.
The device is a
drone which monitors
bird populations with
hyper spectral imaging.
Burnside year 13
student Jack Breurkes
won the software category
with his Mobile
Physics Game, a tool
to help NCEA level
two students study for
physics exams.
Meanwhile, Michael
Hann decided he’d
skip the Papanui High
School senior prizegiving
last Tuesday.
Flying up to Auckland
to attend the Bright
Sparks awards evening
was a better offer and
it was worth the trip.

Although he’d checked out
the competition, Michael wasn’t
expecting them to read out his
name.
“It was really cool . . . I had
a working protoype, so I was
hoping that would be
enough,” he said.
He attended the evening
with his father, a bit
of an inventor himself.
The top prize came with a
new mobile phone and a
cheque for $400.
Even though he was
absent at his school
prize-giving, Michael
was awarded $1000 by
Papanui High as well. He
said it was a good night
all round, one he’d never
forget.
ASB head of innovation
and commercialisation
Leigh Angus said the
company is proud to be
involved in a programme
that nurtures brilliant
young minds.
“This is the second year
ASB has been involved
in the Bright Sparks and it
continues to be impressed at the
creative thinking that goes into
the entries,” Ms Angus said.

YALDHURST pensioner
Muretta Grimwood celebrated
her 100th birthday on
Wednesday with friends, family
and a carrot cake.
Mrs Grimwood was “just
delighted” to receive her letter
from the Queen.
Each year, cards are sent on
behalf of the Queen to those
celebrating their 100th and
105th birthdays and every year
thereafter.
Mrs Grimwood went to Addington
School and then went on
to a technical college, where she
learned typing for about three
years.
After finishing school, Mrs
Grimwood worked as a wig
maker at a shop on Colombo St
until 1939 when World War 2
broke out.
During the war, she worked in
a factory and, in 1942, she married
Ron Tolputt.
Mr Tolputt was in the Air
Force during the war, where he
was stationed in Guadalcanal for
one year.
They had their first and only
child, Lyn Wright, in 1947.
Mrs Grimwood continued to
make wigs at home.
Mrs Grimwood and her sisters
ran a weekly dance in Christchurch
for many years.
Mrs Wright said it was a
popular event and no alcohol
was allowed.
Mrs Grimwood remarried in
1969 to Bruce Grimwood and
became stepmother to his five
children.
Mrs Wright said she admires
how capable her mother is.
Mrs Grimwood stopped driving
just three years ago, when
her eyesight failed the test.
She still doesn’t require a

Mrs Grimwood had an afternoon
tea on Wednesday at Yaldhurst
Courts where she lives.
“The lovely people here put on
an afternoon tea for her and she
was so excited about that,” Mrs
Wright said.
She said they also had a family
afternoon tea for her mother on
Saturday.
