That’s not to say I’m never alone. I like peace and quiet but I also know that too much of it’s not healthy. Getting the balance right can be a tricky thing to work out. I’m a community development worker in Riccarton. My role is about welcoming people into the community and helping them to connect with others. I do this by visiting new people with welcome packs, which include an information booklet of local groups and activities as well as some homebaking and preserves from the local community garden. It’s about giving everyone the opportunity to connect at some level in their new community. Not everything appeals to everyone and you can’t do everything, but we are social beings and we all need to connect with other people sometimes for our own mental health and well-being. I love this job and am passionate about people connecting with each other. Isolation is not helpful for anyone. Linking new people in as quickly as possible goes a long way to avoiding things like loneliness and depression. We are blessed to have a great number of activities and services happening right here in our local community. Some of these activities are for children, some for older people, some for men, some for women and some are for everyone. Examples include a fortnightly café, to weekly fruit and vegetable co-operative, exercise classes, community garden and a craft group. There is no excuse not to link in somewhere. If you are new to Riccarton or want to get out and about, don’t sit at home and feel alone – get involved in a way that works for you. Readers react to Fulton Hogan’s plans to create a quarry in Templeton Bill Palmer – The quarries in that Yaldhurst area have been there for as long as I can remember, in fact I’ve seen photos going back to the early 60s so why would any sane person buy in that neighbourhood? Gary Robinson – So the poor people who moan about the dust from these quarries think it only affects them, well what about the people that go in there or work there? Does it not affect them as well or is it only the people that live by the quarries? I’ve been going in and out of these quarries for 30 years and I’m still alive and I only live about 3km from one. Sarah May Cronin - The city council need to do something. Talk about devaluing property in the area. Sean Woods – Plant some trees, amazes me why there are not more trees planted when everyone complains of dust. Tess Lenihan – Why buy next to a quarry? Plant trees if you’re that intent on living there. Thor Major – Seems like the right place for a quarry. Luke Simpson – People want roads but don’t want the places roads come from.
