The quarry is in the Selwyn District but the people who will be affected most by any potential dust are in Templeton – Christchurch city turf. The Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury will sign off consents – which means Templeton people will desperately need help from their Weedons neighbours. Western News asked Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton and Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood community board members what the important issues in their areas were. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora said the Yaldhurst Village was a significant matter which the board will be working “very closely” on with the Selywn District Council and city council. “There are still a lot of legal issues to be sorted out and variations of consents and stuff which have shut quite a lot of the development out,” he said. Mr Mora described the Yaldhurst Village development is “an absolute disaster.” Over the course of the year, he also said the community board wanted to be proactive, not reactive. “What happens sometimes is the bureaucracy grinds away and comes up with a plan, and sometimes those plans don’t work in reality and then we have to go Mike Mora Helen Broughton David Cartwright into reactive mode to try and fix something,” Mr Mora said. He said confirming a location for Hornby’s mega centre was a major priority. The city council plans to build the centre at Denton Park. However, the proposed facility has been highly controversial with sports clubs concerned about the loss of their home ground. Mr Mora said “we need to get the best solution that will work.” PROPOSED: Denton Park is one of the potential locations for the high priority Hornby mega centre. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton agreed it was vital to find the best location for the centre. She also said the completion of roadworks on Riccarton Rd between Deans Ave and Harakeke St was a priority. “That’s obviously caused a lot of concerns and justifiably so,” she said. However, more work is planned along Riccarton Rd, she said. “It’s my understanding we’d be having a look at Harakeke to Clarence Sts – and that’s in terms of the superficial upgrade,” Mrs Broughton said. She also wants some smaller road repairs completed including Bradshaw Tce in Riccarton. “It’s always been put backwards because compared to other roadworks, it’s not critical,” Mrs Broughton said. The expansion of Avonhead Park Cemetery was an issue identified by Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman David Cartwright. Other projects which would be front and centre for the community boards included the Riccarton Community Centre, ensuring safety is maintained at the Riccarton Bus Lounge, and the completion of the Halswell skate parks. •HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think should be a priority in the area this year?
