for young Kiwis
IN ACTION: Bella Forbes playing for the Berkeley
university hockey team in California.
“If a chance came up and
it fit with what I wanted to
do I wouldn’t say no to it,
but New Zealand is a pretty
cool place. I think I would
always want to come back
to it.”
She is now working two
jobs while she prepares to
head to the school in August.
For 19-year-old Bella
Forbes, a scholarship did not
work out so well.
She was accepted into
Berkeley University of
California, which is fourth
ranked in the world, on a
four year hockey scholarship
worth more than $250,000.
But after six months there,
she gave it up to return to
New Zealand.
The level of competition
there was something she had
not been prepared for, she
said.
“To get into Berkeley is
so strenuous, people have
been studying since they
were eight-years-old to get in.
So it’s really competitive in an
academic sense, which meant
people wouldn’t share notes and
petty things like that.”
That carried through to the
hockey field, where she said
the coach was there to win and
worked the girls incredibly hard.
“Towards the end I remember
ringing my mum saying I don’t
want to play hockey at all anymore,
it was that bad. I was used
to having supportive coaches, but
she treated it like it was a job and
we were her employees.”
But in spite of her own decision
to leave, she would still
recommend that others take a
scholarship.
“I think people have to take a
shot. You’ll regret it if you don’t.”
She said it had taught her a
huge amount about the world,
and about herself.
“It was good to get out of
my comfort zone, because
I’m a real home bod. The
people were really nice.
And it was huge, people
who haven’t gone there
can’t comprehend how massive
the place is.”
She had wanted to study
in the US for years, partly
inspired by her father who
had to turn down a scholarship
there.
“My dad is a commonwealth
swimmer, so
when he was my age he
was offered a scholarship.
But back then they weren’t
full scholarships so he was
going to have to pay crazy
amounts of money to go,
which he didn’t have.”
She said her goal was
to study commerce, and
her skill at hockey was her
way in.
She used an agent to apply
for universities and get
in touch with coaches there,
but said it was still about a sixmonth
process dealing with the
16 schools which approached her.
She is now settled back in
Christchurch, studying commerce
at Canterbury University
and playing club hockey.
But she said she had made
lifelong friends while she was
there, and wouldn’t rule out going
back to the US for postgraduate
study.
