Tearney puts health woes aside<br />

FINN TEARNEY is set to<br />

make his on-court debut at the<br />

Davis Cup when New Zealand<br />

meet Pakistan at Wilding Park<br />

tomorrow.<br />

Tearney, New Zealand’s top<br />

ranked singles player, will be<br />

happy just to get on the court<br />

after an experience to forget<br />

during the team’s last tie in<br />

Korea. He fell ill and was unable<br />

to play due to tonsillitis.<br />

“That was pretty average, I<br />

ended up having my tonsils<br />

out after that. I love being in<br />

the Davis Cup environment<br />

with the guys and I’m looking<br />

forward to playing in front of a<br />

home crowd,” said Tearney.<br />

New Zealand play Pakistan<br />

in a group one Asia/Oceania<br />

relegation match.<br />

<strong>The</strong> match will be crucial as<br />

the loser of the tie will be relegated<br />

to group two.<br />

Twelve months ago New<br />

Zealand were just one win away<br />

from advancing to the world<br />

group play-offs.<br />

However, with New Zealand<br />

winning just one of the four singles<br />

ties, it has become evident<br />

the team are in need of a standout<br />

player in singles to make it<br />

to the next level.<br />

It is hoped Tearney could<br />

be that player. In 2014 he was<br />

ranked outside the top <strong>15</strong>00 in<br />

the world and in the space of just<br />

two years has risen to 362.<br />

<strong>The</strong> tie starts at 11am with the<br />

first singles matches.<br />

TRAVELLING TO NEW ZEALAND JUNIOR RUGBY FESTIVAL<br />

IN QUEENSTOWN, SEPTEMBER <strong>2016</strong><br />

New Brighton Under 11 coached by Riki Bolton and Nethaniel<br />

Bolton (Shorty), managed by Sarah Fuller, is a new team mixed<br />

up from the Under 10 teams from last year. <strong>The</strong>y have gelled very<br />

well together and work well as a team. We have ended the season<br />

with mixed results. This year we will be taking 20 boys down to<br />

Queenstown for the New Zealand Junior Rugby Festival. <strong>The</strong> boys<br />

have worked very hard all year and we are all looking forward to<br />

finishing off the season with some good results. Once again we have<br />

had fantastic support from our club, parents and local community.<br />
