20 Tuesday August 30 2016 SELWYN TIMES Kirkwood - Opportunities Schooling For The Whole Child The focus of a successful school is the pupil. The growth of our children at Kirkwood is supported by the many extension opportunities we offer over and above our classroom activities. We work on extending learning opportunities in a number of areas. Music Music is taught as part of the performing arts curriculum in all classrooms however, extra opportunities are available for students to learn a wide variety of music. This year, our students have been learning the Guitar, Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, singing in the Choir and playing in the Orchestra. We also have a Rock Band which performs in assemblies during the year. Technology Some of the highlights in our technology area include: • The Maggi Cooking Competition; • Robotics; • 3D Printing; The cook book is an opportunity for interested students to engage in a real-life, authentic learning experience, resulting in a high quality publication which will be on sale later this year. • Online Cookbook ; • Maori Carving; • School Recipe Cook Book. Extension Groups, Competitions and Events Our students have many opportunities to participate in various competitions and events offered at Kirkwood. These include: • ICAS competitions; • Cantamath; • Canterbury-Westland Science Fair; • Science Badges; • Blue Light PCT competition; • Otago Problem Solving; • Publishing of a school magazine; • Art Cup and; • Kids’Lit Quiz. Sports Apart from the regular physical education programmes within the classrooms there are many other sports offered at Kirkwood. Some the sports played this year are Netball, Football, Cross Country, Skiing, Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Waterpolo, Touch Rugby & Rugby League. One of our highlights for this year was the recent Korfball Tournament where we gained first place at the Canterbury Korfball Championships. The Selwyn Times continues a series this week with C1 Espresso head chef, Lucy Ayres • By Gabrielle Stuart LUCY AYRES was told she was crazy for leaving Melbourne to return to Christchurch three years ago. But since being back, she has started her own business, earned a job managing C1’s kitchen, and seen the local food scene transform. “I always found Christchurch was quite conservative, people weren’t willing to step outside the box with what they ate. But the food scene was starting to change in Melbourne so a big thing for me was bringing that creativity back into Christchurch, and people are open to it,” she said. At C1, that meant she had the freedom to try creative things with her dishes, like serving french toast with cherry tomatoes, bacon and lemon curd rather than the classic fruits and berries. She believed that willingness to change also contributed to the success of BAOdown, the steamed bun market stall she opened when she arrived back in Christchurch. HAVE YOU BEEN TO SEE US LATELY? I went there every day and I fell in love with them. So when I ended up moving back I wanted to set up to make some money between finding a job.” She ran the stall with her sisters, Isabella and Sofie, working weekends at the markets and catering for events and festivals while working part-time at C1. She said it was a lot of fun, but when she was offered a full-time job managing the kitchen at C1 last summer she had to sit down and make a choice. Although she enjoyed the stall, she said the potential she saw to revitalise the kitchen and menu at C1 won out. “I was starting to enjoy working at C1 more than I was taking it seriously at the stall. Personally, she said she had always loved food. “I’d invite my friends over and we’d always be making something in the kitchen when I was 10 or 11, even if it was just mashed potatoes.” While she hoped to do more travel in the future, she said she could see herself staying in Christchurch for many years. “I want people to say let’s try the food at C1, it’s the best in the city.
